CK3 Dev Diary #85 - An Artifact's Life

Hello and welcome to Dev Diary 85 for Crusader Kings III!
This is Areysak, Content Designer (some of you might remember me from Imperator).

As the release date draws nearer and nearer, I’m here to talk to you about Artifacts. Again?! - you are probably thinking. YES, because artifacts still have more to offer! Let’s take a closer look.

First, you probably know by now that artifacts are an investment that requires time and gold. An inspired character makes them for you, but how can you make them feel like they are really yours?

… Why not inscribe your name on them!

While an inspired character is hard at work making a fancy artifact for you, they might ask for your input on dedications: do you want this artifact to preserve the glory of your name for posterity? Or maybe you want to impress your lover, memorialize your deceased soulmate, or even make the artifact testify to your faith. A dedication is forever!

Dedicated artifact

Occasionally, an inspired character might also seek your input on what functionalities you expect out of their artifact. Should your armor shine so bright that all your knights are inspired to greatness on the battlefield whenever you lead them, or should it favor practicality and make you more effective in mountain areas? You can choose an angle for your artifact that will make certain modifiers more likely to appear at creation.

Event to set the artifact’s focus

On a separate topic, artifacts don’t exist in a void, but are living items in a living world, meant to be used, exchanged, stolen… and damaged. With use and time, an artifact’s durability lowers. What happens when your grandpa’s armor gets rusty, or your sword loses its edge? You need an expert! The Antiquarian at your court specializes not only in maintaining but also in repairing your artifacts. With just a couple of clicks (and some gold) your artifacts will be as good as new!

Repair interface

Sometimes, however, just repairing an artifact doesn’t really strike your fancy… Grandpa’s armor has seen its fair share of adventures, but it’s ancient, and you have newer and cooler stuff to wear! Before you hit a flea market to get rid of it (and possibly have Grandpa curse you from his grave), you have another choice: reforge! By reforging an inventory artifact, you change it into a pedestal artifact to expose in your court. Of course, its modifiers will change accordingly - wearing armor might make you tougher to kill, but it will hardly be of any help if it stays on a stand by your throne! On the other hand, your courtiers might be impressed by its fine decoration.

In some cases, however, you might not care enough about an artifact to repair or reforge it… When artifacts reach 0 durability they get destroyed and disappear from the game. Before that happens, however, other possibilities might open up for you through events. Perhaps a scrap collector will offer to buy it in exchange for some gold (don’t expect too much, though, they collect scraps, not riches!), or your antiquarian might find a way to repurpose it.

Event for decaying artifacts

Finally, some artifacts gain a reputation or a story through time! The sword of an often-triumphant general will be remembered as a fearsome weapon, while the crown that sat on the heads of your dynastic predecessors for generations will be recognized as a symbol of your people. But be careful, because if either you or your artifact gain an ominous reputation, your artifact might be known as a cursed item!

That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this DD, and are looking forward to next month’s release as much as we are!

Will we get artifacts like the staff of Moses, the Ten Commandments, the holy grail, the crown of thorns, spear that pierced Christ side, Sword of Ali, Cruxification cross, relics of Muhammad?

Even in period, anyone claiming to own the true cross would be laughed at – after all, you could walk through the market square in Jerusalem and buy enough splinters and nails from it to crucify a dozen men.

On a related topic, the same goes for blessed and cursed artifacts! And since I've been asked, I can confirm that the intervention of a holy figure, as suggested by the event above, can reassure your people about the non-cursed nature of a cursed artifact. Of course, they won't be successful every time... ;)
The modifiers reflect the fact that people will recognize the artifact and be intimidated or encouraged by its fame: for instance, they give fighting advantages.
Question: will it be possible to call in a less-than-savory priest to conduct a less-than-savory ritual, in order to secure a less-than-savory legacy for my weapon?

I like this one. More rpg elements are nice.

Hope to see some buildings functions too, more economy and war improvements.

Shame that Inspiration mechanic related to it is still ridiculous as it was in the first diaries though

Shame that so many people here are fine with such shallow and non-sensical mechanic too
Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

A bunch of answers in no particular order:

- Inventory (= wearable) artifacts will be free, court artifacts will of course require a court (= DLC).

- Artifacts won't give you a claim on a title (let's say you steal the Pope's tiara, no one will believe you are entitled to be the next Pope!) - however, characters can have claims on artifacts: personal claims (e.g. someone stole it from you, it is within your rights to claim it back!) and family claims (ok, your older brother inherited dad's Awesome Sword as his heir, but everyone knows that you were his favorite and deserved it instead!)

- I know that the artifact naming mechanics don't sound very inspired, but we had to keep it simple and versatile to make it work with all the possible combinations of features! Anyway... You can rename your artifacts whatever you like! Go crazy with your Stabby Swords of Stabbiness and Cool Armors of Self-Righteousness!

- I think we might have already mentioned that relics are religion-bound: nothing prevents your Christian ruler from showing off Buddha's tooth if they somehow come to own it, but you could hardly gain any piety or impress your clergy with something none of you believes to be holy!

- We did touch up some DNAs, but calling it a rehaul is a bit over ambitious!

- Yes, you can see other characters' inventory.

- Yes, I know there are apostrophes missing in the screenshots. They apparently went on a strike but will be brought back to order asap.

But can we steal it and wear it? Asking for a viking friend.

This will do nothing to give CK3 any real depth. Gimmicks aren't enough to add any kind of real strategy or challenge to this game, which is still just a map painter with some shallow RP mechanics

Good to see Artifacts beeing a dynamic entity in the game. This definitely has spiked my interest for this dlc again. Yes people probably do care more about their own stories bound to artifacts than your mayor having some weird issue. Not to say you shoudnt care. Together with the culture systems its looking like i give this one a good shot.

More like a thousand men, but yeah. And how about those nails? Enough of those to start your very own hardware store...

People who spend a lot of time horse-riding are sometimes described in novels as 'bow-legged' because of it, but I don't know whether that's an actual physical change or just a jest (like "watching TV gives you square eyes"). If it's true, then you'd expect to see a lot of bow-legged men and women in the CK milieu.
This is a good idea, though I always pictured bow-legged as the comedic stereotype shown in old western comedies, where the legs are spread outward like when riding a horse causing them to walk funny rather than only having the knees flexed (though the knees would still be flexed). You can easily see what I'm trying to describe by doing a quick google search for bowlegged cowboy. Interestingly, although you see this image depicted of cowboys from the old west, I don't think I've ever seen a similar depiction in any imagery from anywhere else in the world, even if they did regularly ride horses there.

I've never heard the expression about watching TV giving you square eyes. That's an interesting phrase. I've only heard that watching TV rots your brain.

Will it be possible to disable this feature in options? It all sounds a little silly and gamey to me.
That's going to be an unpopular position, I'm sure, but I just hope that the devs will accomodate those people in the audience who don't really want to go down this road.

Which one of them? Items in general?
