CO Word of the Week #10

Hi Everyone! Let’s talk about the patching process and upcoming patch landing soon for Cities: Skylines II.

Generally speaking, patching the game is something we usually try to combine with upcoming releases, and only work on solely bug fixing patches if we don’t have a suitable release we can wait for. Or the fix is critical to release as fast as possible - a so-called hotfix patch. You may remember the free updates associated with the DLC releases in Cities: Skylines and in the long term that is the goal with the sequel as well. It’s a good way to sneak in some cool features and improvements to all the players, beefing up the base game, and making certain features part of it while the paid content expands on those new features allowing us to continue developing the game forward. One of the first examples of this approach was After Dark where the free update added the day and night cycle to all players and the DLC itself had specific content and features for the nightlife.

So we are working to improve the quality of Cities: Skylines II, just like we did with the first game, and this includes both improvements to the base as well as creating new content as paid DLC. We worked at a fast pace after the release last October to get as many fixes in as we could. Patching the game so often does take resources in itself so we opted out for a less frequent pace to focus on bigger additions and more impactful updates in the future. Therefore the upcoming patch 1.0.19 is the last “stand-alone” bug fixing patch for now. Next time the bug fixes will be joined by the first of the modding support for the game, albeit it will not be the final version but a public beta one as mentioned last week.

We’re working on a wide variety of fixes and improvements on top of the missing modding support and platforms. We have a list of reported issues from both you, QA, and the team here at Colossal Order. These issues are sorted based on the level of their severity and the time it takes to implement them so that we can churn out as many improvements to the game as possible with the time and resources we have available.

In practice, the patching process starts with the build version being locked so that no more changes are committed to it by the devs. The build goes through at least one QA round, where the listed issues are verified as either fixed or still occurring. Any new issues with the build are reported as well. Any outstanding issues are fixed and the new locked build version goes to QA. This step usually takes less than a week but can take longer depending on issues found and how quickly those are fixed. After the devs are happy with the build version it's sent to the publisher for their checks, including submissions to each platform and setting the patch ready to go live for the public. This can take a couple of days to a few weeks depending on the size and content of the patch. The release is always aimed so that it wouldn’t be right before the weekend, just to make sure that if any issues occur on the public release there is a team available to check it out. In the meantime, the devs are working on the game toward the next release whether it be fixes, improvements, or new content.

Patch 1.0.19 will include a collection of fixes for issues we’ve discovered internally or have been reported to us by you. Thank you again for all the reports, it’s much appreciated! Full patch notes will be available when the patch is released, but here’s a little summary of the things we’ve been working on.

Improvements to the gameplay are mainly focusing on the land value:
- Land value will be affected by ground pollution. The ground pollution will first slowly reduce the land value increasing, and when the pollution gets worse it will start to decrease the land value
- Land value won't decrease to 0 even with heavily polluted land
- Land value will increase according to industrial company's profitability value
Land value is likely to receive more love in future updates, but more on that in the future.
On top of these, we’ve also improved the search for parking spaces. Anyone who is driving a car in a bigger city knows how tricky it can be!

Some balancing work went into the Incinerator Plant as building the Extra Incinerator Furnace upgrade would cause it to produce less electricity, the opposite of what the effect should be, and little tweaks were introduced to the resources to avoid traffic jams at the cargo stations. Then there was the appropriate care put into the youth as the teens and children required balancing for their spawn rates and now more teens are entering the High School to get educated. Think about the children, they say!

No patch without some focus on the performance. This time we’ve optimized shadow culling, pathfind scheduling (especially visible as faster and more stable simulation speed in very large cities), added cooldown to avoid too many queries on citizens seeking education when the city doesn’t have enough schools, and reordered some rendering related systems to reduce waiting in the main thread.

Last but not least, the patch fixes issues in the statistics panel, multiple cases of random crashes (crash to desktop when selecting "moving in" household, after modifying roads with citizen group at specific state, and when modifying road with pedestrian path connected in a specific way, to name a few) as well as added some missing text and translations.

The devs at Colossal Order are fully focusing on improving Cities: Skylines II further after patch 1.0.19 is out. Actions speak louder than words so we’ll pause these weekly posts and be back when we cover the content of the next patch/release for the game. Keep following our social channels for the latest updates and have a lovely week!

Sincerely,
Mariina

Honestly, I'm really disappointed with what I got too. I pre-ordered the game and received who knows what. I am also waiting for a refund option. In future the game will be cheaper and more playable. Now, I spend higher price for things you are not deliver. Ultimate Edition was supposed to be richer. I invested in that because i wanted to support creators that looked so much different that others companies. I have never been disappointed with purchase like this time. It's a slap in the face that they're talking about paid DLC when the base version is unplayable, filled with so many bugs, and is so incomplete. You got your priorities wrong. But I see that the only thing that will convince you is when you realize that no one is buying the paid DLC, and only then will you do something about it.

The list of reported bugs is loooong. There will be many disappointed people once the patch notes for 1.0.19 land.
CS2 has over 4100 bugs reports over a span of 3 months. To put it in perspective, CK3 released in 2020 has 2000 bug reports, and Victoria 3 released in 2022 (which had plenty of bugs in release and performance issues) has 4800.

With the news this will be the standalone patch, and the fact the patches highlighted in this dates back from Game’s release, We are going to be waiting a very long time for CS2 to be remotely playable, with or without DLC. It’s appalling that they are going to release paid DLC when the game Is currently so bad. It’s like No Mans Sky but doing the complete opposite of what they did to win back trust. Not to mention disrespectful to the community that we have to wait for paid DLCs now to get bugfixes and patches.

EDIT: CK3 has 2000 non-archived bug reports. 10,400 more in its bug report archive.

Thank you for the update on the next patch. There are definitely some fixes in there that are huge problems. But it wasn't specific on if they fix other issues so:

-I'm assuming land value fix will fix the high rent issue?
- assuming fixes to the incinerator plant will also fix trash not getting picked up

Education part seems like it will be fix, because I had about 30k kids in elementary, but only about 2k in high school. More kids entering high school sounds like a fix.

Another big issue I did not see at all mentioned is crime and mail. I have 2500+ criminals my city and 0 arrested. Will these people finally get arrested in the next patch?

Also as I mentioned last week, you guys should really look into getting help from other studios under the Paradox umbrella so we can get these fixes out sooner.

HI Dev's, Swdevelopers, Ceo's,CFO, and all other.
Major gamestudios have published a sorry to their gamebase and even did refunds/partial, or did release special content. I even think call of duty was the last one, last week to have their players base contacted about the bad update they released and caused major problems.
Since this release, there are major problems, declining revenue, declining player base, more and more remarks.

And sadly , some minor patch about ground value (major bugfixing/improvement???) was announced.
Not even an apologize , not even a real timeline, no commitment to the players that bought the game)

Customer service or game base player service are not relevant.
-Most people do not care about your dlc's or others for the moment.
-Give us simple what we deserve:
An apology
-An major fix to make the base game working
-Our promised assets from launch
And then you will have our respect again and we start working with you to make this a huge success.
Sincerely and we the most respect, but work your buts off day and night like the other studios did. Because communicating then you went on holiday for a month when other studios were working on fixes and releases was no customer service

There's a good point there. I pretty much assumed what I was paying for with the Ultimate Edition would eventually be available at a discounted price. I understood the premium I paid was for having that content early on. But that's not happening. Whether or not the UE content is eventually discounted, I was enticed by the marketing to pay more for something I haven't received... and have still months to wait before it lands, if it does. I'm not a seasoned gamer so I didn't understand the risk I was taking by pre-ordering a game. I believed the promises of the marketing. It's this as much as anything that has soured me on the whole game experience. Judging by comments in the last WotW I'm not the only one. Nothing in the latest WotW has made me any more hopeful that what I paid for in October is coming any time soon or ever.

Thank you for the update !

It will be good to have some improvements and after new gameplay at the same time. Even patch is more or less new gameplay to test

Just because actions speak louder than words does not mean that words are unnecessary.

Please keep the weekly updates coming, please, even if they're short, and aren't associated with a specific patch or product release. Just offer any news about priorities, newly-discovered and newly-squashed bugs, and especially refreshed timelines.

The WotW has been welcomed and I really hope it'll be maintained, if for nothing else than to minimize the toxicity levels. Goodwill needs to be restored and requires more, not fewer, communications channels.

I also agree with those who say that paid DLCs should be delayed until after mod and console support is released (not beta). Thinking about extra revenue, when so many people already feel cheated by a base game released long before it was ready, is a guaranteed way to inflame.

(Heck, at this point giving away for free what was going to be a paid DLC would be a very appropriate apology gift to the community.)

Thanks!

You haven´t even fixed most major bugs and are already talking about DLC? Nice.

Please focus on the main game before focusing on DLC. We are waiting for the core game to be fixed and I cannot even think of buying a DLC for this game at this time when the simulation is bugged to the point of unplayable on my maps.

As an Ultimate Edition buyer, I agree with you that the team at CO should focus on base gameplay and performance before DLC.

My theory of what’s going on is that: performance and editor improvements will take so long (Q3/Q4 2024) that only prioritizing them would mean delaying UE Content even more, which could cause legal and financial issues.

I think they’ve reached the conclusion that by fixing some performance and gameplay issues slower, it allows them to devote enough time to console and UE content and avoid financial blowback.

I don’t like it, personally, but I do understand that delaying content people have paid for and were promised is more untennable than delaying features that were promised as “coming soon.”

The legal definition of coming soon is ridiculous lol. The very public and specific timeline promised for paid content, with specific timetables they were delayed to is actually very actionable.

The decision to release something is not the decision of the QAs. The decision is made by business if they take the potential risk of something the QAs communicated - if business commits to take the risk there is nothing a QA would do as business is responsible in case something goes wrong.

Nobody should judge the QAs work from the outside as you don't know about the requirements (in form of stories) they checked against and also not about the bugs which were internally reported and accepted for the initial release phase.
I understand which entity makes the decision for final release. My original post is regarding "the patching process and build version" approval comment.
Here's my issue:
If the original QA caught all of the major problems before release and were ignored, I'd like to know who ignored them and why.
If the original QA missed all of the major problems before release, I'd like to know why the next link(s) in the chain didn't catch them.
I am referring to MAJOR issues with the game, not minor bugs.
I am not judging the QA. I want to know if the same QA is being used, because (according to everything I have seen from the Dev/Pub side of the issue) they claim to have done nothing wrong. Therefore, it must be the QA. If it isn't the fault of QA, I'd like to know why they even bother then.
Quality Assurance is useless if it doesn't assure quality. It's even more useless when ignored.
MAJOR issues were missed, pardon me for being skeptical of their "Quality Assurance".

Hello Mariina,

thank you for the details about the upcoming patch.

As you can see in many other postings, there are still glaring issues that don't seem to be addressed in the upcoming patch.

So all in all, I can only see partially good news here. For now, we're still in a dire situation. :(

As much as I try to understand your standpoint as a developer, I hope, you also try to understand our standpoint as customers and players. Longer wait times between releases might be better for you to handle, but we as players need at least some indicator that at least something is happening here.

Think of it as some kind of progress bar: Everyone knows it's nonsense, but also everyone expects it to be there, myself included.

Well, what can I say: Let's see how good the upcoming patch works. I really hope, it will be worthwhile the longer waiting for the next release.

But at least, I can say one positive thing: This WotW was much more informative and helpful, so I see this as a good start. Please keep us informed without spamming us - I know, this won't be easy, though.

I really hope, this whole situation will come to a good conclusion, but II have to admit that I'm doubtful right now.

Let's hope for the best.

Best regards,
sys

Thanks for the update! I hope the next patch makes the game playable for me again, I really want to waste many hours building my city again lol. My only concern is with the slowdown in the patch cadence, but maybe the game breaking bugs for me will be fixed in the next patch. If not, then I guess I have to wait a few months for the next one and see, which feels rather depressing to contemplate. Anyways, stay focused and keep your head up, we’re all pulling for you and the devs.

Thank you for providing much more in-depth information than past WoW’s. This was a refreshing read after last week’s. Still no responses about the game’s very early release, possible refunds (I know it’s a stretch), and nothing really new. See you guys in a couple months, I guess. I hope the modding platform brings people back to this game!

However, please do stop all communication that includes the words "Paid DLC"....

Fully agree. Is an insult to all players who have bought the game but are waiting for a good game. Furthermore, I think that a paid DLC at this moment does more harm than good. Many players don't want it now, as they are not exited enough. It's a missed opportunity to do it later but better.

Just as reminder, some people bought the Ultimate Edition with DLC and Expansions included that should be launched in Q3 2023 and Q1 2024, and they have been delayed without any alternative (refund for example).

Of course if they release any DLC besides the announced ones in the Ultimate Edition, they deserve to don't sell a single copy.

And the news of no more WoW, looks like they don't like that we are not agree with them and finally have decided to cut some of the communication with the community, not the best move.

One big thing for me and traffic in the game: Rondabouts are implemented but do not work as intended. There is no "give way" when cars enter a roundabout... instead, cars in the roundabout stop to let cars in. And that is massive mayhem, roundabouts should help smooth the traffic but with this big lack of the most important rule for it, they do not work - will this ever be fixed? Will we ever get "give way" traffic signs as well? Stop signs would hlelp - but we cannot place them for specific lanes or parts of intersections, instead they get added to the all directions of an intersection...

I really think you need to read thie article in Engadget titled "What’s up with the 'toxicity' around Cities: Skylines II?" listen to one of the your most followed CS you tubers... He has been honest and frank about the issues and what you could do to restore faith in CS going forward like an apology etc .. I went to all the effort of getting a PC after been let down on my PS5 pre order..only to find an unfinished game.. disappointed but not angry so far as it really is starting to get tedious and boring playing cs2. And have done 6 cities ... Before all becoming CPU jammed...
