CO Word of the Week #9

Welcome back to the weekly update on what’s happening at Colossal Order and what to expect for Cities: Skylines II. Last week we had in-depth conversations with our publisher Paradox Interactive on the priorities and goals for Cities: Skylines II for 2024. There’s really nothing new when it comes to the previous statements: Modding support, console versions, and the Expansion Pass content are to be worked on and released during the year. From the great discussions emerged an important decision however: the modding support will roll out gradually as the features enter beta and we won’t wait for all of them to be fully completed before setting them live.

What this means in practice is that we’ll start giving the mod creators early access to the modding tools as soon as the code modding and Paradox Mods are ready for testing. If everything goes as planned a Public Beta version of the code modding and Paradox Mods will be available a couple of weeks after that. We’ll continue to work on the Map and Asset editing as they require a bit more attention still. Map editing is expected to be available sooner than the Asset editing, but at this time it comes down to iteration time and the feedback we’re getting on the usability of the tool. Asset editing is unfortunately suffering from technical issues and as long as players are unable to save and share the assets there’s no point publicly releasing the tools. We do have a plan for the fixes, but it might take months in the worst case I’m afraid.

To summarize on the priorities of the modding support:
  1. Public Beta version of code modding and Paradox Mods will be available in the live build by the end of March
  2. Public Beta version of Map editing available in the live build together with code modding or soon after
  3. Public Beta version of Asset editing to be announced, only after the technical issues are sorted can we roll out the tool
  4. Continue to work on the modding support and get out of the Beta stage during the Finnish fall.
We’ll keep resources on the modding support throughout the entire lifecycle of Cities: Skylines II as we know there are many improvements and feature requests we can work on to help the modders achieve their goals even after the initial Beta release.

The work on the console versions is ongoing and while gated by the modding support we’re making progress. We’re not committing to any timelines as there are too many unknowns at this time, but we’ll keep you updated and will communicate the moment we have something to share. For the Expansion Pass, the artists have the Beach Properties content almost ready and we’re on track for its release.

Before those bigger releases, we’ll have one more patch coming out. After this, we’ll include the bug fixes and performance improvements in the releases to reduce the amount of individual patches. Patch 1.0.19 is going through its first round in QA at the moment and will be released after it passes the checks. Full patch notes will be released on the day the patch goes live, but you can expect fixes for stuck maintenance vehicles and an additional fix for abandoned dogs, who will now be returned to their homes. While the work still continues on the land value, we have an improvement so pollution properly affects the value. And last, but definitely not least, we’re currently testing a fix for the tax bug with crazy high or negative numbers.

Keep following our social channels for news about the patch release and hope you enjoy the game in the meantime. Have a lovely week!

Sincerely,
Mariina

"There’s really nothing new when it comes to the previous statements: Modding support, console versions, and the Expansion Pass content are to be worked on and released during the year."

I have no words for the level of frustration and betrayal I feel after reading this. So much was promised for last year, which was paid for last year. The more time goes by the more I feel like CO is annoyed that the community is upset and views us as entitled and impatient.

Well, I am very much reaching the point were that would be correct. I am upset, I am impatient and I am entitled. And I don't believe im alone.

I'm upset because I was deceived with multiple emails, videos and web pages with promised packs and mod support and much more.
I'm impatient because there were release dates stated with those communications and they have passed and now CO is just waving their hand in the direction of the future and has now reached the point where "during the year" is apparently an ok release schedule.
And I AM entitled, because I've paid for these products that were sold to me, I am by definition entitled. Even people who haven't bought the ultimate pack are missing things that they were sold with launch and then told were coming soon in September of last year and now its sometime in 2024. Personally I pre ordered the ultimate pack because I'm a massive fan and trusted CO and paradox.

Honestly, you have let us down badly and I'm sorry if I've missed it, but I've not even seen an official apology.

I hope I haven't come across as toxic or aggressive in any way, if I have, please know it wasn't my intention. I've been behind this project since I learned of it and a fan of both CO and paradox for most of my entire life, and I say that as a middle aged gamer. I own every CO game and much of the expansions and I've been playing paradox games since I was a teenager. What im trying to say is I have a lot of love for both CO and paradox, so to write a post like this makes me very sad. But a proper apology is needed not from the community moderators but from management.

Its dissapointing the relationship here with the developers has turned into a one way street.

Developer says, were listening... were working hard

Community speaks their frustrations with state of release

Developer says.. maybe its not the game for you, were working hard

Community vents their frustations

Developer says... were going on vacation, see you next year, drops a game breaking patch

Community goes ballistic

Developer says... too much toxic here, do we stop engaging with you?

Community offers feedback to deaf ears

Developer says... Were sailing towards ticking all the boxes that are holding back us releasing to Console as our first priority, and fixes the dogs. Oh, we got the expansion pass content ready too.

Working Hard? 12 weeks since release. Developer has not worked a single weekend. Had time for a vacation. Now, everyones entitled to time off, but when the #@$ hits the fan in my world, I work my butt off to fix the situation. I do what has to be done to fix it. That isnt happening here. In fact, we got a schedule of months before we get anything still, and its the stuff to do with making more profit.

You built a beautiful boeing 747, but forgot to put windows and seats in and replaced the jet engines with propellers before selling it.

Its beyond a joke. Im done being supportive of this developer. Ive been polite and constructive here, but no more. I feel taken for a ride.

Yes, and the release date is Q1 for Beach Properties, which is on track for release she said. So the stuff you paid for is still on its timeline.
What is delayed is the free region packs since that was supposed to be part of PDX mods.
The Beach properties was supposed to be launched on 2023! Urban Promenades and Modern Architecture, as well as another radio was supposed to be released on Q1 (before March), and Bridges and Ports on Q2 (before end of June).

Right now, we have that the Beach Properties will be launched sometimes between now and September, without any more specification (Q3!) I think we will hae Briges and Ports in 2025 and this upsets me a lot.

I'm not a game developer, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I have followed a lot of other releases and I'm noticing one particular thing here.
It looks like patching is on a hold (bug fixes like abandoned dogs and stuck vehicles are of course minor fixes that should be somewhere on the end of the list of patch notes). I believe that all now is focused on the console release, including major rewriting, downsizing graphics, simulation, etc. This somehow makes sense, because in this state it could never be released on console. After that, bigger patches can come out, because there is no use in patching something that's going to be rewritten for the most part anyway.
For me it would explain the (quite extensive) delay of bug fixes that shouldn't be too hard.

The release schedule is on Steam. What you paid for is not being delayed further. There is Beach Properties in Q1 which could be by end of March. Then after that there will be more of the DLC you paid for as per the release schedule.
Are you sure the roadmap on Steam is accurate? They already delayed it from the original release date, since Beach Properties was supposed to be out by the end of 2023 but was pushed back by three months. The same goes for the DLC. When I pre-ordered the game in June, the roadmap was completely different from the current one. And delays are becoming the norm for Colossal. I'm sorry, but I don't agree with what you said.

The problem is that, with CO's limited human power, they shouldn't focus on the controller version for now, the game itself is not ready for release, and selling it to controller players only means that more players will get a terrible experience. Either those controller players don't know the actual game quality (I don't think they won't hear anything) or if these problems are solved, otherwise not many people will buy it.

CO can you honestly answer this problem here: How much power have you devoted to fixing major gameplay bugs and how much power have you put into controller development? I believe many players that have bought this game and suffering from those simulation bugs would like to know the answer.

I’m a bit worried that there isn’t a fix yet on land value. For me, the problem with land value, that appeared with the last patch, is stopping me to play. All my cities are dying because of it, I cannot build industries or low or medium residential or even commercial buildings. It’s a bit frustrating.

I get what your saying. What I'm trying to say is, sometimes a project becomes such a mess, it's better to start over. So maybe CO decided to (partly) start over, with consoles in mind, and put all the manpower on that project.

HI , a while ago u posted / video ( not sure about that ) that people should not be disrespectfull to the Dev's and the moderators for this Game.
U are totally right about that, but u have forgotten one thing.
The disrespect u are now showing to the buyers and players of this game is making the game community surprised, angry, and even left alone , to this and other threads in this forum.
in the change management, that this game needs, to be again a top game like CS1 was , u need to make a hotlist with priorities and planning:
i see only commercial aspects being pushed and the already existing playerbase left without real dates and commitment:
- Modding support, console versions, and the Expansion Pass content are to be worked on and released during the year.
why only commercial , because Modding ,something that made CS1 SO GOOD and WONDERFULL due to the community and still each day does, well modding will only be BETA to gather feedback.
Now it seems to me that money ( cash flow problem?, just a guess) has to be made before u can working on the needed improvements ( modding and fixes )

it is astonisching to see 8 years after CS1 and dozens of DLC's and a millions contributions of a community of modders and users ( on steam) that this is so draw down to a basic game that lack's lots of stability or CITY gameplay.
if you never played a City builder , than this is a terrific game, but city builders are dedicated ( you should know it also, by the reactions of the community.)

so i think you have 3 challenges coming up before this game goes down drain :
- First FIX the game => and deliver release date for patches => get some release management in place where dates are commited. U can do it .
- Mod the game or create a seperate team with modders and work your butt off to get it fixed with them. do not forget. Modders and CS1 did have me buy DLC's and support modders .
- Get a decent release ready for Console by the end of year. it will sell more.

and then next year have some decent DLC's coming out when we ( the game community and also a lot of modders ) love the game again.

oh and a last thing , we know you work hard, and we appreciate all the effort that you did put in the game. i think we deserve the same respect as we are all ( modders and players ) in love with this game ( well CS1) and hopefully will be with CS2 next year , but give us more commitment.

There is a little problem, this CEO and Paradox can't represent all actual programmers, these programmers did build a GREAT framework, releasing it before it has been finished and making false promotion is the real toxic thing.

That's what I'm worrying about now, I suspect that most of their programmer are working on controller version to maximize short-term profit for CO. Otherwise I can't understand why they haven't fix some simple but serious bugs, like capacity of school, parking lots and land value problem (this is almost fixed by some mod)

This is ridiculous. You took peoples money, promised the best city builder game ever but then you dont put mods and assets on release. It was shady to not even mention that until like 2 days before the game dropped, when people already pre ordered your game. You guys released a unfinished game and youve become industry sellouts. If you had waited a year to release it with everything you promised, you wouldnt have the backlash that youre experiencing now.

Well, I was waiting, hoping that something would happen. But this is crazy... There is nothing in the base game and they still don't accept terrible planning of assets which could only be helped by modders. But wait, modded assety are almost a year away!

That is it. Keep the money, Idc. Uninstalling now. Maybe I check back in a year...

Oh thank goodness, for a second I was worried that paid DLC would be delayed more and you wouldn’t be able to rake in even more money.

Will there be any actual beaches for the Beach properties DLC, or will those only be possible with Dev Mode?
That's kinda rude. They delayed it from last year to give attention to performance updates. Which they did.
People have bought Ultimate Editions and paid for those DLC that you seem to be sarcastically putting down as just a way for them to rake in money. They can't delay that content anymore because it's been promised.
Apart from that, a lot of people want some extra assets to use and will give much needed variation.

As for you "beaches" comment, this is not a full expansion pack, it's beach properties. Won't come with a beach all of a sudden. The other DLC after this are all water based so I'm sure if things went well, between Ports expansion and Urban Promenades there could've been a beach vibe update to maps.
