It's Tuesday and time for another dev diary on the latest expansion for Crusader Kings II; Sons of Abraham. The topics of the day are pilgrimages, Judaism and religious events. First off though, for those who read last week's diary, we've changed how the Ash'ari and Mu'tazilite traits are handled a bit. They are now much more significant, because an Ash'ari no longer gives decadence to his dynasty, and the Learning bonus for Mutazilites is correspondingly higher (currently +5).

Right, so, on the subject of Islam, one thing we were quite happy with in Sword of Islam was the addition of the decision to go on the Hajj, with the little adventure and the special trait you got at the end. Naturally, a lot of people thought we should add a similar thing for Christians, so that is exactly what we have done in Sons of Abraham. Christians get to choose between several different holy places. For example, Catholics can go to Canterbury, Santiago, Cologne, Rome or Jerusalem. During the journey, a regent will be appointed for pilgrim rulers and various adventures will unfold. Going on a pilgrimage costs a bit of money, and there are of course risks, but successful pilgrims will enjoy monthly piety and respect from their brothers and sisters of the faith for the rest of their lives. There could also be some unexpected benefits...

In the same vein, we have added tons of events dealing with religious life, for Christians especially. Some are complex event chains (for example, there is one inspired by Joan of Arc) and others are simple (e.g. monks cure your illness.) There are events about relics, immoral priests (of most religions), the crusades, etc.

However, the feature in Sons of Abraham that appears to have garnered the most attention is probably the addition of the Jewish religion. Prior to the addition of the 867 start date in The Old Gods, adding Judaism to the game seemed relatively pointless due to the lack of significant Jewish rulers. In 867 though, there is indeed a powerful Jewish state; the Turkic Khazar Khaganate, which we previously represented as being of the Tengri faith, but which was historically well into the process of converting to Judaism at the time. (I think it is plausible enough that they did this in order to counteract foreign interference justified by Muslim and Christian proselytizing. Furthermore, it can be very beneficial for an empire to have a religion of its own as a vehicle for cultural cohesion and dominance.) Now, playing as the Khazars is not easy even in 867, due mostly to their powerful and aggressive neighbors, like the Pechenegs and the Cumans, but there is also a real risk of religious internal strife. In other words, it's a worthy challenge, like playing as the Zoroastrian House of Karen.

Of course, there is an even tougher challenge available, even for those who do not have The Old Gods; one last Jewish Khazar duke is still clinging on in the Saray region in 1066, vassal to the Cumans. Now, Jewish players have similar goals to strive for as the Zoroastrians; you can try to restore the ancient united kingdom of Israel and Judah, restore the High Priesthood under the Kohen Gadol, and even rebuild the Temple.

Apart from the Khazar Jews, there are also the Ashkenazim and Sephardim, in the form of learned men and courtiers who can show up in your court. If you run out of money as a non-Jewish ruler, you can also choose to borrow money from Jewish merchants. If you do not want to pay them back, you can actually expel the Jews from the realm (similar to what you can do with the Holy Orders.) You will, however, stop getting the benefits of having remarkably skilled Jewish courtiers to serve in your council, and you and your descendants cannot borrow any more money from their community. Obviously, this is a pretty terrible thing to do, but it does, unfortunately, have several historical precedents.

I believe that about sums up the features of this little expansion. Next week I'll go through all the stuff we're giving you for free!

Random doubt:
So, catholics will be able to mend the great schism? or only the orthodoxy will be able to?

They can still do it in the only way that makes sense, by converting individuals or installing co-religionists on orthodox thrones.
The magic, wave your hand and athousand years of diverging traditions fly away to make everyone like you solution of LoR is mental and really doesnt need extended.

It should be expanded. One event chain could depend on your conquest of Rome. If it gets eaten up by a Fatimid Hulk and they hold of what should be a mandatory reconquest attempt by papal following rulers but you (Byz) retake it. Could be seen as the clearly favored branch of Christianity. If you're the one to toss the pope out of his comfy chair, then you have to defend against the reconquest. There should also be many attempts to put the pope back into place. Or attempts to press other religious heads/anti-pope claims.

If you hold out and meet the rest of the mending requirements then it reasonable that Orthodox could be declared the winner of Christianity, however those that should be the most likely to convert should be those excommunicated or low favor with the former pope. But eventually those hold-outs will die and Orthodox will take over. Maybe through events as well? Only the "important" excommunications or it could get too spammy. Say Dukes and above? Pdox can make something up with events or you could look at their traits and make up your own and have just a yes, no option.)

Thanks for the dev diary, Doomdark! And keep up the good work!

However, I'm quite confused  because we've got very little new information about the dlc features in comparison to the live stream, although the stream was supposed to be "only a very brief overview". That's why I hope that there will be some surprise features to the dlc which are not discussed in the dev diaries :)

Which screenshot ? I don't see any, but the 2400 troops in one pic and that is not really scary. Though..i haven't played in 867 yet regularly, so don't know about numbers in that region specifically.

It's that screenshot and since it's january 1 869 I assume they are free event troops.

2400 is not really scary. Pechenegs get 5k, Cumans 8k and Yagubuids 4k. AI Khazaria will still get shafted because it will waste those troops on vain defense. Human player can be smarter and let whoever declares first war to have Itil (as king title won't disappear), holy war new capital from Derbent and save the free troops for the inevitable vassal revolts. Later when Tengri have bashed each other over crown of Cumania, Itil can be reclaimed.

At least that's how figure the initial moves of Khazars will be in most games.

please don't tell me you'll change the RNG to make Jews more likely to have better stats..

Doubtful. I'm guessing there will be events where a high-skilled Jewish courtier can join your court, similar to other "someone appears at your court"-type events. They'll probably make pretty good councillors, and you'll lose out on these if you've banished jews. "Normal" Jews will likely be generated the same way as anyone else.

Is the Rabbi wearing a Judenhut ? Can the random Jewish courtiers outside of Jewish kingdoms be seen wearing them via portraits I wonder?

Untrue (except for possibly the ultra-orthodox). Judaism does recognize converts, and once the conversion process is complete, converts are required to be treated the same as those born Jewish. Most of the modern controversy comes from Orthodox Jews not accepting the authority of non-Orthodox Rabbis to perform conversions, so they do not accept those conversions as valid. As these divisions came well after the CK2 timeframe, this is not an issue for the game.
That's pretty much a modern innovation, though. Medieval Jews would be crazed fundamentalists in the opinions of most modern Jews (modern crazed fundamentalists aside, obviously).

Umm... You are aware that the conditions that need to be fulfilled for conversion to Judaism are discussed and set down in the Mishna, which was compiled well before CK2's timeframe, right?

Yep. Not to mention that Ruth, founder of the Davidic lineage, was a convert. And she wasn't the first - that was probably Moses' wife Zipporah.

Does any of this matter in the least when the only jews represented in the game are Khazars?
Who did it for politics and as its only within their realm they can bend and define it however they want

There are also going to be Jewish courtiers in Western courts, as well. And anyway, this discussion started with a suggestion that non-converted Jews and their descendents should have a trait that differentiates them from converts and their descendents, and then we started debating if such a differentiation would be historically accurate.

A thousand years of diverging traditions? You don't really see any sorts of splits at all between the East and West until around the 6th century.

as with the mention of magic directly before it, I was being hyperbolic, meaning a very long time rather than an exact amount.
The issue is a mad simple solution to instantly and relatively free from consequence resolution to a great many complicated and long standing and serious issues of cultural, social, political, theological and etc differences, with one click of a button.

But some of those issues go back pre-christian times as those were the rocks christian civilisation built its foundation from, so thousands would probably work while at a same time being completely unhelpful. But as a backpeddily defence of the arbitrary use of the word it works.

I think the idea of relics would be really cool, sort of like in civilization and having great works or something like that. I know that's probably not going to happen (and no one has talked about it, really), but some cool events would be awesome.

I can't remember whether or not pilgrimages are going to be included in 2.0, or only for those who purchase.

It maybe that I've played far too much of the Game of Thrones mod, or far too obsessed with Arthurian legends, but I'd like the idea of having dynamic, location based relic quests (like with dragon eggs in aGoT), and if you find said relic you get massive spike in spike in prestige and piety (or unbeatable armies, like with the Holy Lance/Spear of Destiny[ it worked in the actual Crusades])
