Dev Diary #113 - Community Choice Event Pack

Greetings!

We’re all back, gathered from the holidays, and ready to set sail for 2023! Actually, most of us have been back for a few weeks by this point, working away on this year's big release, but we're not going to be talking about that just yet. That's not to say we're not going to in the future, but until we are ready to, we want to give you something to dig your teeth into as a community. This is the first of a small series of Dev Diaries about some more minor things, teasers, and today, about a brand-new community initiative!
But first, here’s a small teaser of something coming in the expansion:

Later this year, after we’ve released the next big expansion and before we start working on the next large project, we’ll have a period where we have the time and opportunity to work on an event pack. For the last event pack we chose ‘friends and foes’ as the core theme, as it was something practically everyone in the team felt strongly about, and something that needed more content in the game. Since then, we’ve had so many ideas for future event packs, both from within the team and outside, and this time it’s harder to choose…

Therefore we’d like to invite all of you to help us decide which theme to pick! We have three themes that we’ve curated, which means a few things; each theme has designers on the team that are passionate about them, and we know roughly what free feature we’d like to add to the update that will accompany the event pack: generally we'll be aiming for something with a similar size and impact as Friends & Foes' Memories system, which heavily ties into the events we're making but is relevant across the game as a whole.

We don’t have final names for the event packs yet, but as we enjoy alliteration here’s what we’re calling them and a very brief description of each:

Wards & Wardens - Anything childhood-related, with themes such as: playing as a child, being a guardian, handling children in court, and so on. A deep dive into what being a child in the Middle Ages was actually like, and what guardianship meant in practical terms.

Love & Lust - An exploration of more intimate relationships, with themes such as: expanded seduction, romance, married life, and so on. This would be a great time to allow lovers and spouses to take on a larger role in the game.

Villains & Vagabonds - Events and content around Dread and Tyranny, exploring what it means to be dreaded, leveraging your fearsome reputation, making dread more visible, and the consequences and opportunities of being a tyrant. It’d also be interesting to explore the other side of the coin from Dread - fairness, and honor.

Even though this event pack is something we’ll work on later this year, it’s good to get your input now - this way we can start working on it without delay as soon as the next big expansion is out! As we have a lot of talented event-crafters on the design team, we feel quite confident that we can adapt to whatever theme you, as a community, choose.

If this turns out to be a popular activity, it is possible that we will do it again in the future! The themes that do not get chosen this time will likely make a comeback, alongside some new challengers.

The poll to vote is located in a separate forum thread here. Voting will begin today and you will have until January 27, 8am CET to discuss the different themes and cast your vote. We’re looking forward to seeing which theme you like the most!

It would be nice if the game could better reflect all this...
I think this basically requires the same approach to inheritance laws that we already have to cultures and religions :)

I find it odd that the three main things people keep asking for:

-Trade
-Improved Religion/Crusades
-Byzantines

Paradox have specifically said they are not going to do. I didn't see any clamouring for Royal Court, Consoles or overpiced event packs. Such a shame the pretty good initial release has not had any decent content since (besides modders). I get the impression the experienced A-Team Devs got moved onto other projects after release.
Also the console port is handled by a third-party dev, so the implication that it's somehow sucking resources away from development of the main game is questionable.
Unless the third party developer is working for free, which I highly doubt, then of course it takes resources. :D But that's beside the point. If Paradox believes selling the game on another platform is going to be profitable, then of course they are going to do so. They're in the business to make money, after all, and as long as they do so ethically and legally (and I see nothing unethical or illegal about developing a console port or hiring third party developers) then I've got no issues with that. :)

It just occurred to me that with the hinting with the next major DLC we might get 2 more RPG focused DLC.

That's like the first 6 DLC all RPG focused.

Please I beg you I just want some war mechanics, and gameplay focused DLC.

You are free to have the opinion that F&F isn't worth it's price because of not having enough content, but claiming that it has only 10 events is obviously wrong - and there is no indication given that the announced community choice event pack will be smaller than F&F and of the size you claim. Call it nitpicking and splitting hairs, but I just disagree with that needless exaggeration. If you think F&F's 100+ events are not enough, fine - but then just add that "0" to behind your figure.
What are you the CEO of this company? Do you ever heard somethink like a metaphor. Its a fact that people will get the feeling that they are getting ripped of when they keep up with this nonsense event packs. Thats why i called only 10 events.

The term you're looking for is "hyperbole".

The problem with using hyperbole for rhetorical effect is that when the product contains 100 events and some back-end stuff to support the events, describing it as containing 10 makes you look either ignorant or malicious.

You don’t have to buy the packs.

They’re extra. If you don’t like what they include, you don’t need to buy them. Your game will not suffer.

I think I only bought unit graphic packs when they were deeply discounted and I’d been playing CK2 for some time. I thought to myself, oh, well, I guess I would like some new dresses for my dudes on the map at that price.

Before that, there was no effect on my game save for being unable to use certain graphical mods, and I didn’t buy them because they had minimal value for me.

Here is the same thing, except now I happen to like the event packs more and will buy them full price.

No. I never claimed to be. May I ask why you supect that? Or what you imply with this question, assuming it is a rhetorical one?

@grommile already nicely explained the difference between a metaphor and your hyberbole. If 100+ events and some "backend stuff" are such a clear "non-sense", which makes "people" feel "ripped-off by"...why then there is the need to exaggerate by factor 10? Doesn't look the truth poor enough in your own eyes? ;)

Personally I hope that in time all of these event packs for the game can be made. They are all parts of the game that need more flavour and that an event pack can actually help with.

That's a clever way to distract people from the fact, that you want to sell content that's available for free and better.
Most commercial video games that pass the first Sturgeon filter are still worse than Nethack.

Others in this thread have already pointed out that this is incorrect, but I thought I'd also lend the weight of my word to it: at no point have we ever stated that we won't do any of those three features. We've merely said that the next DLC won't cover certain features, of which trade is one. In fact, if you look at DD #109, all three of those themes are mentioned as things we do want to do in the future, whether that be near or far.

I didn't say "ever", but granted I should have specified "next"

I think they mentioned that they have researched various concepts but still haven't found the perfect formula for it and also don't want to go back to the CK2 Style in a past diary.

It is the same with trade and the Empire-mechanics. A proper system will take time.

So this is clearly the Pont Valentré in France, which leads me to hope for a DLC with a focus on France.
If so, please let it include one of my requests from the Suggestions forum: wine! It is absurd that we do not have any buildings related to wine making/growing in the Mediterranean region.
Make it a cultural pillar, make it a building tree, make it a duchy building or whatever... please just add it.

Also, as a bridge, I would expect this to be related to tolls (which might at some point connect to trade). That matches nicely with a villains DLC where you can extort tolls from travelers once you control an important bridge (such as the bridge at Regensburg, also suggested in the Suggestions forum).

Pont Valentré has 6 arches and 3 towers and according to the interwebs, that's how it's always been. Since I can't think of a reason for why they'd draw it differently(other than to possibly mislead), I'm gonna assume that it's not Pont Valentré. I'm also under the impression that the coming DLC won't be a flavor pack focusing on a specific region but something bigger or at least broader. I could be wrong...
