Dev Diary #116 - Agrarian Research Techniques

116_EyesLeft.png

116_EyesRight.png

... Anyone watching? No? Good.

Ok, just you and me. Great, because I've only got a few wee lil morsels today and I don't want to share them with too many people. So let's all just keep this quiet and, if anyone asks, the dev diary was about how we research thirteenth century agrarian techniques in rural France. Got it? Good.

I want you to tell me what this historical character...
116_Char1.PNG

... this historical character...
116_Char2.PNG

... and this historical character all have in common.
116_Char3.PNG

Figured it out? Yes? No? Waiting for someone else to scan through every character in the game before you hazard a guess? Ok, well, to be a bit fairer, it's got something to do with this:
116_ListCensoredv2.png

The list includes all the interactions in a particular category. You would not see all of them at the same time like this.
:D This has nothing to do with Wards & Wardens.

Finally, none of them are directly connected to this chap:

Alright, that's all I've got for you today, but I expect to be going over that list again soon. And in detail. If anyone asks, remember: rural France, agriculture, thirteenth century, yada yada.

Till next time!

I am a history nerd, like most here, but what i really enjoy are tales from everyday life and how people coped with challenges of v their times, those give history a red blood real life feeling for me.

I specially enjoyed the part the bishop ordered all doors between church and kitchen opened to make folks pray faster.

Thx for your delightful post

Glad that I'm not alone in loving old living history!

I have a lot more (although not about that bishop), but most of it might not interest anyone. Still, I love it! Did you know that in the time between 1125-1150, for the diocesan chapter of the Frankish city of Bamberg, there were 8 courses for lunch on Sundays during summer time? We even know what those were:
  • A piece of mutton and two pieces of pork
  • Entremet: two pieces of pork and two pieces of mutton
  • Stew made from meat and cabbage
  • Pork with pepper
  • Fried sausage
  • Tripe
  • Roast
  • Another stew made from four pieces of chicken, four pieces of sausage and a bit of mutton stomach
In winter there were "only" six courses. I can absolutely understand if the higher ups in the clergy got fat and became quite cranky if they didn't get their food in a timely manner.

The interesting bit here, so as to not go entirely off-topic, is the "pork with pepper". Pepper, despite not growing anywhere in Francia, was part of the obligations that were paid to the diocesan chapter, and it is noted that the dutiable serfs had to buy that (expensive) pepper on the market, which was almost exclusively supplied by Venice. Other obligations included a yearly delivery of five ells of linen, one belt made from stag leather, one knife with scabbard and a pair of shoes made from goat leather.

Money started to replace most, if not all, of those obligiations in the 13th century. Very interesting indeed.

Paradox, read the room.
Walking into a 20-page thread full of people having fun with the latest Paradox communication and accusing Paradox of not reading the room is a really weird look.

In the fourth image with the King(whoever he is), is that a stone dog bowl on the bottom left? I had earlier thought that the cages might be something to do with falcons/ravens/pigeons and maybe we will be able to take our pet dog with us hunting or breed them so they don't die off after a decade. The Hunt was, after all, something the nobility practiced a lot.

Yes, I also thought that was a water bowl for a dog.

I can't read all 21 pages. Is there a summary of the findings of the brightest minds?
Some serious evidence that regencies are coming back.
Some mild evidence that the announcement is imminent.
No evidence of bear culture tho.

EDIT: Wokeg loved this comment, BEAR CULTURE CONFIRMED

+Prints out comment, cuts out individual words and arranges them around the points of a chalk-drawn pentagram. Candles flicker and @johnty5 hears a distant whisper behind him. When he turns around, no one is there+

-> Oof, it must've been the wind... - gains the trait More Vigilant for one year / gains 52 stress (critical) because you are Paranoid

-> I need to go deeper into this. - You'll continue your adventure to decipher the dev's code messages...

My take;
Free Update: Regencies. (New interactions and civil war types)
Expansion: 3D characters moving on the map. (Adventures, pilgrimages, marriage seeking, envoys etc)

This would be awesome for flavor if there's a way to implement!
It would also be very historical. Due to lack of plumbing, and with Royal Court populations numbering in the thousands, Monarchs were literally forced to go "On Royal Progress"; moving from one royal castle to another.

I wonder what that would look like in game. Perhaps you would have to decide how much money to allocate to making your lieges stay as pleasant as possible. Feasting them and taking them hunting maybe in exchange for opinion bonuses and prestige.

But then wouldn’t vassals need to have their own courts to do this? And if that were true, what would differentiate a counts court from a kings? Artifact slots? Unless the king/queen has their own tent.

I think this is an interesting idea for sure.

21 pages of replies - the responses to the Dev Diary comprise more content than has been put into the game recently. Just embed a link to this forum inside CK3 so that once a player hits a wall on enjoyment and/or content in game, they can pop-up the latest replies and "role play" here on the CK3 Forum.

These are the actions available for regents :

These characters are all regents :

116_Char1.PNG

116_Char3.PNG

This character is a king or a duke but he's under the authority of a regent. The birdcages are a hint to make you know that he's not free of all his moves.

Maybe the full body shots are subtle hint could be the introduction of some sort of official version of fullscreen barbershop? Hard to say though since devs do have access to more flexibility in creating images and it could just be that, but an official version of what the fullscreen mod does wouldn’t be a disappointing addition.

Hard agree, this is definitely something that should've been integrated ages ago.
