Dev Diary #132 – Eccentricity & Adoption

Eccentric

Hello hello hello, welcome to another Wards and Wardens dev diary! Today I'm going to be talking you through two new features: adoption and the Eccentric trait! We'll start off with the simpler of the two features: Eccentricity.

Why add a new trait in Wards and Wardens?

Friends and Foes added the Loyal and Disloyal traits, but unfortunately these came quite late in development and as a consequence they were quite under-utilized, so we decided to have the discussion around new traits quite early this time around and we went over a few different ideas including Superstitious, Silly vs Serious, but we kind of knew all along that what we really wanted was something analogous to the Wild Wasteland trait in Fallout or CK2 Lunatic.

For those unfamiliar, Lunacy in CK2 was usually where we made our more… out there content. There are still echoes of this here and there in CK3, but for the most part, Lunacy isn't really the same as it was.

The decision was made quite early in CK3's development that the lunatic trait would be analogous to real-world mental illness so this kind of content was typically deemed inappropriate. As a result of that decision, we've not really had an easy way to gate the sillier side of things when it comes to the player character. This has been a bit of a divisive subject on the forums, so we felt we needed some way to gate the content without resorting to game rules.

What is Eccentric? Who is Eccentric?

Eccentric is a personality trait meaning it is an essential part of a character's personality. Eccentrics are erratic and irrational, but there is a method to the madness so they may be able to see things that other characters don't.
image-2.png

Numbers are subject to balancing

Wards and Wardens being all about children and childhood made it the perfect fit for a new Personality trait, and as with all other Personality traits in the game, Eccentric can be acquired during childhood.

People have been known to lose their marbles later in life, so a particularly stressed character may have a mental break which causes them to start seeing things in a more Eccentric way.
image-5.png

As you can see in the below screenshot, a non-Eccentric child would just guess at the options presented to them, but an eccentric may think of something a bit more creative.

There has also been an audit of some existing content to add checks for the Eccentric trait where sensible. The now-infamous Cat-apult event, for example, has now been made into an Eccentric event.

Something I'd like to nip in the bud quite early is that the Eccentric trait is not intended to reflect any real-world disabilities, illnesses, or neurodivergence. I think it's wonderful if you are able to project some of your own experiences onto the trait, but making a direct and conscious effort to make the Lunatic trait analogous to real-world mental illnesses is the reason why we ended up making Eccentric to begin with and we'd rather not have to come up with another trait for our silly content.

Eccentric is a free feature and will be available to everyone, but some unique content related to the trait will be exclusive for DLC-owners.

Adoption

Now onto the next feature of this diary and one that's quite exciting to me personally is the Adoption interaction! Now many many patches ago we introduced the Same-Sex marriage rule and ever since then it's just kind of been there and we've yet to introduce a way to actually make same-sex play… well, playable.

Who can adopt?

Under the default game rules, Adoption is available to characters who are in a same-sex marriage, the childless and elderly/infertile, and Compassionate characters. Compassionate has long been a bit of a weak trait to have, so it's nice to give them a powerful way to secure succession and bring talented orphans into the family.
image-8.png

Who can be adopted?

Children can be adopted as long as: they're not a ruler, they're not in prison or otherwise unavailable, nobody in their family is a ruler, they're not already part of your house, and they're not in the realm of someone of their dynasty. This does mean you're technically allowed to adopt noble children, and children whose parents are still alive, but they are highly reluctant to accept adoption in those circumstances.

image-9.png

Noble Adoption

If you want to role-play a culture where adoption is commonplace (as it was in some off-map and out-of-period cultures), you can take up the Noble Adoption cultural tradition!

image-10.png

Hold on a minute, isn't this anachronistic?

Sort of! While adoption amongst nobility was exceptionally rare, it wasn't completely unheard of. As such, we've restricted access to adoption quite a lot as described and the AI is quite reluctant to do it.

Can the restrictions be loosened?

Absolutely! Adoption comes with three new game rules that can forbid it or make it easier!

Just like the Eccentric trait, Adoption is part of the free update releasing with Wards & Wardens on August 22nd. Next week we will talk about the new Court position and share more details on what to expect from this event pack. See you then!

The event pictured does not identify the bird as a corvid. I am not familiar with the calls of European or Eurasian birds; could it be a blackbird or starling? Especially the latter.

edited to add missing word
If it caws, it's probably a corvid of some sort. Especially with it being black. Jackdaws are the smaller corvids we get in Europe, but "small" bird is a bit of a relative term.. Some crows are small, especially compared to a raven or particularly the larger eagles.

Edit, and following on from gromille : blackbirds and starlings whistle, twitter or chirp. They don't caw or make the kind of rusty hinge noises that the corvidae do.

As one of my favorite playstyles is "lesbian matriarchy" I'm quite happy to see this added to the base game.

May I suggest a decision to "find promising youngster" to make it easy to find candidates for adoption?

Say you have a sister who for one reason or another is married normally and childless (or same-sex married and childless). Perhaps she married by event, perhaps she grew up in the other parent's court and was married off by the AI. Either way she's your only sibling, and holds no titles, also being married to a non-inheriting courtier.

Her children would be non-dynastic, and thus a game over, but if you could adopt her son (your nephew), you might be able to salvage the succession.
Even if her children would be from a different dynasty, this cognatic relationship could help. Maybe you can't convince your eldest nephew, but a younger nephew, who otherwise would inherit far less should be inclined to accept. I'd argue such a blood relationship should be bonus, arguably both for the adopter and the adoptee.
For instance the in England famous Angevins, later Plantagenets, technically didn't agnatically belong to the Ingelger house of Anjou, but actually belong to the Gatinais house of Anjou, the last Ingelger count of Anjou, Geoffroy Martel, adopted the sons of his sister (Geoffroy & Foulques) and the count of Gatinais (much smaller than the Angevin possessions centered around Angers and Tours).
After Geoffroy and Foulques started infighting, the recognition for the entire Angevin inheritance for Foulques was ceding ancestral Gatinais to his liege king Philip I of France (Gatinais was also closer to Ile-de-France and Orléanais).

I'm not totally against some sort of malus though, both for the current ruler (adopter), adopted an heir and the future heir (adoptee), adopted heir. Loyalty of some vassals could be less. Especially distant relatives might be disgruntled.

Though not in the same way as some other adult adoptions, Alfred the Great adopted Guthrum as his spiritual son in the first peace treaty ending the Great Summer Army’s attempt to conquer Wessex. He stood as Guthrum’s sponsor in the baptism that marked Guthrum’s conversion to Christianity from Norse paganism.

Eccentrics are erratic and irrational, but there is a method to the madness so they may be able to see things that other characters don't.

A significant chunk of CK3 players are neurodivergent. Given how well the devs have served us all of these years, I reckon many of the Paradox staff are as well. With all this in mind, I am unpleasantly surprised by the diction in this section of the update.

I proudly identify as both eccentric and uncommonly rational; they’re not mutually exclusive and shouldn’t be conflated. Please do not warp the term “eccentric” to be a catch-all for all-things-weird in a way that might be offputting to a real-world eccentric player. My preference would be you selecting a different term. If you’ve made up your mind already, hopefully there are multiple ways to play the trait. Consider splitting the term into two, such as iconoclastic or unorthodox and unhinged or delusional to capture a fuller state-space of nuance with a reduced risk of offending. I also like the duality of silly and serious that was mentioned and would like to see more playful/whimsical content outside of the arbitrary (and limited other) trait(s).

I’ll leave you with this quotation which hints at what it feels like to behave more rationally than most and yet be adversely judged for behaving unusually (similar to the myth of Cassandra, who uttered true prophecies but was cursed to be never believed): “A sane person to an insane society must appear insane.” Kurt Vonnegut

We've talked about having a "court favourite" court position on the team before, someone just has to put the work in at some point. It would be nice to make same-sex concubines have some kind of mechanical benefit or flavour before we look into making it a default game-rules feature.
I understand that. The prestige bonus is a bit lacking. Though prestige without worry of kids is technically a benefit of a same-sex concubine.

I think court favourite is a good idea, but I'd personally want it in addition to same-sex concubines as there are historical cultures we're the ruler had multiple male lovers in court that weren't secret (which seems to to be what concubines in CK3 represent, if you ignore the lack of babies).

As it was getting quite long and isn't directly related to this thread I made a suggestion with some ideas about same-sex concubines.

Arrrrrgh, pengoyo, you forgot to upvote your own suggestion! We can’t be having that! I just started reading it, and noticed it’s currently at 0 votes.

I'd quite like to revisit RoCo events in general to be honest. It would be nice to bring them in line with our current expectations for CK events, but alas, we don't really get the time to revisit old content often.

Petition for a Royal Court 2 ️ontent pack. Maybe you make like 5 or 6 new throne room models and sell for a low price, to justify revisiting the original DLC as a free update.

Yeah I think there's absolutely enormous potential for Royal Court to be something truly spectacular... If it were developed somewhat more.

Imagine the immersion if you also had additional modelled rooms and halls where you could display all your other collected artifacts, see your Palace Guards standing ready to defend your seat of power... Go have a look in the dungeons and taunt your prisoners... Etc.

Impossible. It’s PDX’s policy that one DLC cannot depend on the other.

It’s therefore impossible for a DLC to exist solely to add content to Royal Court.

I'd humbly ask for some sort of resolution in this specific instance that allows for Royal Court to be added to and worked on...

With the really high quality 3D models, all the genetics, artwork for the clothing, etc... It just seems like such a big waste to leave the obvious main area where that can be fully appreciated be, without continuing to add to it.

Do you have a source for this please?
Sounds like a totally random allegation for me
Given the vagueness of the terms used, I see nothing that needs to be sourced.

If they'd said "most", or named a specific percentage, that would merit "citation needed", but "a significant chunk" is both vague and plausible.

So you are saying as long as i a use the phrase "significant chunk" i can claim whatever i want because this doesnt need to be proven?
