Dev Diary #143 - The Next Chapter

Greetings!

I’m @rageair, the Game Director for Crusader Kings III, and today I’m excited to present to you Chapter III - in this Dev Diary we’ll briefly go over the themes of each of the expansions that will make up the full package and take sneak a peek at their features!

Chapter III is definitely our most ambitious chapter yet, with a Core Expansion, Major Expansion, and an Event Pack (as well as an instant chapter unlock!) New ways of playing the game, and big, sweeping systems is the name of the game this year. Let's have a look, shall we!

Core Expansion - Legends of the Dead

Legends of the Dead is all about the map - specifically that which spreads throughout it! Core Expansions will, as mentioned in previous Dev Diaries, focus on broad systemic changes to the core gameplay loop, or high-impact systems that affect large parts of the game world. As this is our first Core Expansion, we wanted systems that were big and all-encompassing, affecting all rulers on the map in one way or another! With that said, here’s a high-level list of what you will see in the Expansion and its accompanying update:

Legends
Tales of your or your ancestors' epic deeds will travel across the map, spreading news of your glory across borders into foreign realms. Embellished tales of heroism or piety were a massive and common part of medieval life, and here we’re allowing you to write your own saga - quite literally! As your legend spreads, a book will be updated with your story - and events you get along the way may allow you to… alter certain aspects to suit you better, after all perhaps it was a dragon that your grandfather slew rather than a bear! The more your legend spreads across the map, and the more rulers that propagate it, the more famed it will become.

Plagues
Plagues are the second thing that spreads across the map, but unlike legends they are destructive and nefarious - with a promise to shake up the game! Deadly diseases can sweep across your lands, spawned by either random chance or the activity of armies, and they will destroy development and kill characters with a vengeance. All plagues are different, with varying effects - such as consumption ending the lives of elders with haste, measles shortening the lives of children, and Holy Fire (aka the Dancing Plague) making rulers… move erratically. Of course, there will be ways to combat and recover your lands from these terrible maladies!

The Black Death
A looming threat that appears towards the later eras - there is no escape from the Black Death, no matter how much you prepare, the end is nigh!

Legitimacy
This is a new measurement of your right to rule and affects a whole host of other systems from factions, vassalization, and even title creation. Of course, this new value will heavily tie into both Legends and Plagues, but also a myriad of other systems. A legitimate ruler will have a much easier time running a realm… but some very tempting actions, such as unrightful title revocation, will decrease legitimacy - making it a precarious balancing act!

Major Expansion - Roads to Power

Climbing your way up from Count to Emperor is a challenge - but to claw your way up the treacherous political ladder of the Byzantine bureaucracy or claiming a new realm as a destitute Adventurer are more challenging yet! This Major Expansion introduces two brand new ways of playing the game, one focused on the Administrative governance of Eastern Rome, and the other on traveling the map in search of fame and fortune. These features have been oft-requested since the early days of Crusader Kings, and we thought it high time to do them - we're pulling out all the stops!

Imperial Administration
Take the reins of a powerful Noble Family within Byzantium and lobby for powerful governorships. Use your influence to improve your standing, improve your estate, and ultimately convince the other families that you should rule as emperor!

Adventurers
Set out across the world as a historical adventurer, one of your own making, or keep playing your beloved character after being unfortunately deposed from your lands! Travel to distant realms, take on contracts, gather friends, wealth, and fame - do mercenary work, or settle in new lands.

Everything Byzantium
I’m not exaggerating when I say that this expansion will be dripping with Byzantine flavor. From imperial fashion to new buildings, historical flavor, beautiful mosaics, and much more - the game will immerse you in the setting with a passion.

Event Pack - Wandering Nobles

Travel is a mechanic that really connects your characters to the map, and in this Event Pack we want to flesh the mechanic out with even more reasons to travel, and things that can happen on the road - new sights to see, new paths to take, and new stories to weave together into an immersive narrative!

Is it about the journey, or the destination? Your characters can decide for themselves as they engage with a new Traveler Lifestyle!

Instant Unlock - Couture of the Capets

The French were a fancy lot, and with this Instant Unlock you can admire their splendor during the high medieval period. As always we’ve put a lot of effort into research to make sure that the clothes are not only glorious, but as historical as we can make them!

That’s it for now! Next week we’ll begin posting Dev Diaries for Legends of the Dead, so keep your eyes out! Also, a reminder that Chapter III is available right now, and if you purchase it now you will immediately get access to the Couture of the Capets (as well as the expansions as soon as they are released, of course!)

We’re very excited to show off the work we’ve done, this really is the biggest chapter we’ve ever done! Until next time!

Landless play? Who woulda thunk it? Interesting...

I hope landless play includes not only new things to do - but also retroactive ability to play certain role currently inaccesable to the player, such as being able to play as a vizier :)

Also hoping legitimacy means coronations!

What an exciting year of features, great work guys - the generated legends looks really fun. I hope they tow the line between being enough modularity that they dont quickly all feel the same, but also not feeling like it's procedurally generated madlibs

Thank you! Playable unlanded characters and a legitimacy systems were literally 2 of my top 3 personal requests posted so many times on this forum

Excited to see what do you have in store for us

Some extremely exciting things and some less so.
  1. I'm VERY excited for ERE flavor, family estates, legitimacy, Legends, and more wanderer events. My only real concerns here are the extent to which FE are locked, how many wanderer events are landless locked, and that the flavor juice isn't worth the squeeze. The only red flag I saw on legends was the "legendary building" screen which seems like it could be a big cop out versus the deep wonder system we had in CK2. But on paper all of this stuff sounds great!
  2. I'm tepidly excited for the imperial mechanics. It sounds like it will be very distinct from feudal but we will need more details before I have confidence this will make playing Empires potentially more challenging AND more fun.
  3. I'm neutral on disease. Very important historically, has some value for immersion and gameplay, but it was never a mechanic that I found particularly enjoyable.
  4. Disappointed in landless. This game is about being a ruler. Shoehorning landless adventure play into the game is not a "bad thing" until you consider the opportunity cost of what they gave up developing to make this happen.

Maybe it ends up being a ton of fun, and I don't deny that it opens up a lot of opportunity for modders, but in a world without key religious mechanics, broken Crusades, succession, lack of trade systems, lack of wonders, societies, nomads, and flavor across the globe I just don't agree with the strategic decision to invest all the resources it must take to get Landless playable.

That being said people were lukewarm on T&T and it turned out exceptionally well so I guess we will see. Those are just my initial thoughts. Excited overall but eagerly awaiting more details.

Sounds like Bloodlines 2.0
Neat.
Diseases are back. Neat.
Legitimacy
This sounds interesting, BUT I fear it might end up being Court Grander 2.0.
Aka, super easy to gain and maintain for most regular players and it will end up making the game even easier.
Another ''Win more'' mechanic.

I'm also curious about the buildings.
Sounds like another money sink for kings and above.

Imperial Administration
Everything Byzantium
Hopefully this isn't JUST a Byzantium thing.

Could it be included for other player empires?

We've been asking for a better Byzantium anyway, so that's good.
Adventurers
Neat.
People asking for a landless mode will finally move on.

I wonder if tourneys will be more common or if finally you can act as a knight in armies.
Otherwise, it sounds like this is going to be simply travelling around and being spammed with the same events constantly.

Absolutely great stuff! My predictions for Chapter III were always somewhat standing on my deepest desires, and I never made a secret out of my love for Byzantium, for proper realm administration etc. My only regret is that it's not the first thing coming out, but oh well, 1st world problems I guess...

But there are, however, a few questions left:

1. How will the Legends mechanic interact with renown/dynasty legacies? Will there be some connection, or is it something separate entirely?

2. Looking at legitimacy, is it in any way tied into the tyranny and dread mechanics?

3. Are the family estates tied to being a Byzantine noble, or will every character have access to private estates outside of titles and feudal holdings?

Again, thanks for revealing Chapter III so early in the year, makes me excited for all the upcoming content!

I would love to see the faces of those who kept saying "there'll never be landless play, the devs confirmed it!" over the past week!
Well, mine is properly shocked at least, as I said more or less exactly that. Then again, I slso didn't think they could pull off dynamic cultures until they announced that.

Simply fantastic. Like truly legendary. You hit on almost all my major wishes. New system like disease (check). Will increase difficulty (check). Landless gameplay allowing even better RPG and storytelling (check). Zero to Hero runs (Check) increase difficulty (Check). The world caring about you and your story aka legend gameplay (check).

Just simply amazing and well done!!!

Can't wait.

PS Chapter 3 isn't on steam yet. I want to buy 4 copies for me and my family :).

Oh - now I just need a warfare update please.

In fairness, making Byz work properly (which is a big thing that people care about) does genuinely require that Interesting People That People Want To Play be playable without those IPTPWTP being depicted as Frankish-style hereditary landed martial aristocrats.

I'm going to guess that "landless adventurer" may have been a relatively cheap extension of that work.

As (previously) a naysayer, I am skeptically optimistic about that update.

I'm much more interested in diseases, though.

The new disease/epidemic system won't matter if I still get 36 positive health/disease resistance modifiers, hope those are reduced. But it will matter for heirs, who can't get all those events, so that is good!

And for God's sake, I beg you, please either buff Diseases, or nerf Court Physicians, even Average Aptitude physicians almost always give good treatment

For me it shows up as a bundle on the Steam page for Legends of the Dead. Chapters are no longer separate items, but just bundles.

I was hoping for more Byzantium flavor, so I'm sold. I don't know whether this is information you can reveal but will there be government mechanics unique to Byzantium like in CK2? I'm specifically referring to the "election" and viceduchy (or whatever it was called) systems.

Also, Legends as an additional "Something that's spreading" mechanic is interesting, excited to see what effects and interactions it will offer.

I really hope legitimacy interacts in interesting ways with succession. Like building your heir's legitimacy is important prior to succession - or their more-legitimate uncle might cause problems after you're dead. Or cheesing succession through disinheritance costs your heir a huge amount of legitimacy, storing up massive problems for the future.

Anything that means succession planning is more interesting/complicated and causes interesting wars of succession.
My fear is that they might implement Legitimacy in a way that makes it way too easy to accumulate resulting in more power for the player. From the video it looks like high Legitimacy offers quite desireable bonuses.

Incredible work folks, this roadmap looks like a mechanics-and-difficulty player's dream. I can't wait to have my empire destroyed by plagues and potentially end up landless trying to recover.

Is imperial government just for Byzantium or can other empires adopt it too? I'd love to try this with the sexy Legacy of Persia content.

This game is about being a ruler
This game is about your dynasty. And dynasties may rise and fall. Losing your land doesn't mean your dynasty is dead. For example, with this you can roleplay a vengeful descendant who swore to overthrow that king whose ancestor backstabbed your grandfather. Or whatever else you can imagine.
