Dev Diary #96: Maybe I *should* diet…

Greetings.

Well, well, well, looks like this is where the fat chin meme comes to die.

Today I will be talking about one of the free several patch additions coming alongside Holy Fury, namely character shape.
With our next expansion, rather than being a random genetic component, this visual effect will be turned into a dynamic feature.
The game now will keep track of your character’s lifestyle and either increase or reduce his weight accordingly. Going above a certain threshold will result in your character gaining the Fat trait, alongside the appropriate visual, while going below a certain threshold will result in your character gaining the Malnourished trait, alongside a new emaciated look.

While there are certain events that can result in immediate gain or loss of weight, characters will progress from one state to the other primarily depending on their conditions and lifestyle. Traits, Focus, Society membership and health can all affect a character’s state. Some factors, such as being Gluttonous, will increase a character’s weight, others, such as belonging to a Monastic Order, will reduce it, and others still, such as leading an army during wartime, will keep it balanced.

New events have been added to give flavor to this new mechanic, allowing players the opportunity to change their habits or offer advice to their friends and relatives’ lifestyle. Some old events have also been updated to use new effects and make the mechanic feel fully integrated to the rest of the game.

And that should be about it.

With this new mechanic, I can tell the dungeons are going to be the Weight Watchers of the Middle Ages... :D

Or the "Shut the Gates" solution.

"My liege, the pandemic is over, and we can finally open the gates and move freely again!"
"Nonsense, I still have another 15lbs to lose!!"

Actually, that's a really good question. Should overweight characters deal with the lack of food while the gates are shut better than regular (or especially malnourished) characters? I mean, if you're malnourished *and* then you run out of food, I'm guessing that that should be pretty damaging to your health.

Yes, if you are malnourished already and then are stuck without food in quarantine, that would make you more malnourished, which, as for the opposite extreme, can lead to health complications.

Love this!!! I hate fat chars

Overall I think it's much better but I feel that the character's stats and the dynasty shield should change places. I would prefer it if personal stats was closer to the portrait, it's also a shame the background art/pattern has been removed with the new character screen.
I am perfectly fine with the old screen and I honestly don't want it to change at all. The new one is just confusing - nothing is where it used to be.

On a semi related note regarding physical traits of characters I have always wished that the developers would add these traits and options. Namely sex. I would like to have the option of not procreating with my wife because it results in to damn many heirs. When my character gets married at 16 I don't like having 10 children. If you are a muslim ruler with 3 wives and you marry young, Gawd help you as you will be drowning in children. Also some female characters should have the trait infertile. Maybe it could be a hidden trait that is revealed after say 5 years of marriage.

that would basically result in cheating. Especially with Gavelkind. Also not commiting sex with your wife is a reason for annulate the marriage.

In my opinion it's not a problem of too many Children Born, cause historically a lot were compared to today in modernized country, the problem is how many Die, mortality rate during childhood where through the roof at the time, even for noble, between miscarriage, disease, and accident few reached adulthood, those that did on the other hand lived decently.

but the fact is that when i play as a catholic nobleman who marry at 16 on average i'll get on average 10+ child, and 1 or 2 at most will die before reaching 16

I like what I see but one thing on these screenshots irks me. Actually, it irked me for a quite a long time now... And that thing is surprisingly enough... English coat of arms. I would suggest that while held by Anglo-Saxon culture changes to something else. Maybe Harold Godwinson's Wyvern standard. Just as e.g. Avar changes to Hungarian upon conquest.
