EU4 - Development Diary - 12th of February 2019

Good day all. After last week's announcement that EU4 will be switching to 64-bit we saw a lot of comments about what people thought this means and does not mean. To clear up misconceptions we'd like to present a more tech-focused dev diary, but wouldn't be able to do such a topic justice by today, so we'll dive into it next week and today let the Europa Universalis Board Game take today's spotlight.

Going full circle, EU, which started as a board game before entering the digital age, returns to its roots. Those who were at PDXCon last year had an opportunity to get first-hand experience with it, so for more information

Europa Universalis the Board Game DD#6

You can also find their previous Dev Diaries here: EU the Board Game forum

As for the development of the Europa Universalis video game, we continue to work through tech debt, a topic deserving of its own dev diary. It'll be a while before we have content from the game to discuss and show off, but it'll be more than worth the wait.

Yeesh, whats with all the disagrees for the post? I’m all for holding their feet to the fire, but the team told us DD’s would be light or intermittent for awhile. I’m happy to hear more about the 64 bit plan going forward.

@DDRJake can we assume this will be a general purpose discussion, or will you guys focus strictly on what the transition means for EU4 alone?

Just read this and you'll understand:

In short; there are a lot of things they can discuss with us, the playerbase. There are also a lot of things that could use some addressing. Developer-diaries are THE platform for such things, but the chances aren't taken. Which is sad. Especially with odd things like the thread I linked.

They're taking their time on this DLC, good. They got two more interns working for them, good. They want to involve the community more, good. Why do the first developer-diaries need to be this shallow then? They could talk about some design-processes, about the new people that have joined and what they're going to do and about community-interaction.

I'd like more information too but I think we just need to relax a little bit. This is the first DD in a long time where they clearly just skipped it and I think that's fine given that it will be months and months until the next patch / DLC.

It is pretty remarkable that they are planning to do weekly DDs even when the next patch / DLC is a long time away, most companies don't do that, so I'm more than willing to cut them some slack.

Have you followed some of the threads I've been making the last couple of months? The linked one, for example? It almost seems like there's a clear disinterest in fixing some issues. I'm worried the upcoming DLC will make the same mistakes as the last two patches, so, that's why I'm vocal.

The problem is that this is not even a dev diary, it's just an advertisement for the board game.

Which has its OWN developer-diaries, even! XD

Hach, the vocal minority of crybabies on their rampage again.

Well, at least these 'crybabies' are usually constructive and point out issues and make suggestions for the game.

I appreciate you not trying to rush or half-ass dev diaries. People should remember that dev diaries are you taking time out of your development hours to communicate with the fanbase. They are certainly a welcome part of the consumer-developer relationship but if there is no quick topic for you to write about, that's totally fine.

I guess, that doesn't bother me personally though because the alternative would have been "hey, we couldn't get the Dev Diary done on time so we have nothing for you this week" so I don't mind them quickly promoting the board game related to the same IP instead. But if that promotion bothers someone, I guess I get it.

I guess it would be better not to have DD at all as there's nothing to write about

Yeah, I've seen some of them. I get it, there are many things to fix and more communication and reassurance from the Dev team is always super nice. It's just that I wouldn't react very strongly to this one time where they don't post a substantive DD. If they start doing this semi-regularly then for sure it would be a bummer and something worth calling out.

Apparently you do this by whining that the devs don't immediately cover your particular pet peeve when the next big update is still almost a year away.

Last time you said something similar you showed us Golden Century :p
Still very patiently waiting for those fixes on it or some word on said fixes...

Because the devs have ample to talk about outside of new features. Addressing various community feedback on issues past, present, and future, for example. Personally I’d prefer a “no DD this week” instead of a “hold on, there will be one later today.... oh it’s an advertisement”

Hach, the vocal minority of crybabies on their rampage again.
Says the vocal minority being a crybaby.
One would think that fans with enough passion to come on these boards and post, talk, and discuss about the game would be a good thing and not the people you’d want to ridicule. They are here because they love the product and want it to be the best it can be.
All while being infinitely more helpful than your post.

I posted some issues more than 5 months ago; I don't expect immediate changes, I do expect it to get changed, though. The thing I don't like is a wrong change, which happened to Notec. A change which makes no sense and also ignores the other feedback I and some others posted. Then there's also the repeat of mistakes 1.28 did (on the map and general flavour, that is), some of those issues haven't been adressed till this day.

So, no, I vehemently disagree with you. I do have patience, but when good feedback gets ignored and implemented in a totally wrong way, then I do get upset, yes.

I've made hours upon hours of feedback-threads, the least the developers can do is to acknowledge that they'll take a careful look at it and try to fix the mistakes I and others pointed out. Mistakes aren't WAD.
