EU4 - Development Diary - 12th of February 2019

Good day all. After last week's announcement that EU4 will be switching to 64-bit we saw a lot of comments about what people thought this means and does not mean. To clear up misconceptions we'd like to present a more tech-focused dev diary, but wouldn't be able to do such a topic justice by today, so we'll dive into it next week and today let the Europa Universalis Board Game take today's spotlight.

Going full circle, EU, which started as a board game before entering the digital age, returns to its roots. Those who were at PDXCon last year had an opportunity to get first-hand experience with it, so for more information

Europa Universalis the Board Game DD#6

You can also find their previous Dev Diaries here: EU the Board Game forum

As for the development of the Europa Universalis video game, we continue to work through tech debt, a topic deserving of its own dev diary. It'll be a while before we have content from the game to discuss and show off, but it'll be more than worth the wait.

I, too, an outraged about the quality of a thing I never paid for.
This forum belongs to a game that, over the last 5 years, has accumulated DLC and expansions in excess of a 200 euro pricepoint.
This entire forum, this thread and the person writing it are financed by things i (and others) paid for.
I dont like paying someone to advertise stuff to me.

You paid for the game and DLCs. Not for dev diaries. Stop acting like you're entitled to something you're getting for free.

I don't understand all these negatives votes to the dd. It should be clear that if the team is working on tech debpt and bug issues there isn't nothing new to show/discuss.

I downvoted the DD not for the lack of news, which is very reasonable and expected, but because I've perceived as cheap that it has been used to promote the boardgame. I wouldn't mind to see the boardgame advertised in the ads banner or even in a dedicated sticky here in the EU4 forum to let players know it exists, but not in this thread. This was my reason, not to pressure them to quit fixing&optimizing, which I appreciate.

I would very much like to have news on fixes and optimising actually. Some people may not like "how sausage is made" (quote from a DD where the inner interface was showing), but then again the public around here is experienced and can appreciate in depth stuff.

I kind of feels like nothing was done this week. Maybe it's okay. It was kind of the same past few week though :3

I, too, an outraged about the quality of a thing I never paid for. I haven't been this angry since the local accordion playing beggar didn't play any of my favourite songs, *even though he could clearly see me*. He didn't even apologize to me after I called him a selfish smelly hobo.
Well, to be fair, the outrage, if it's worth calling it that, is probably aimed at wanting to know more information about the game itself, which people DID pay for. And what you do on your personal time with accordion players is none of my business.....

i think you are making the same mistake you said you would correct since the "iberian uptdate" which was the less, dissapointing, but you said it had so much work that you were not able to change to what people say, now you are not giving any information for the tech update, but if its another mistake you are doing the same, not releasing information until its too late, give the comunity a chance

There are some strong opinions either way on the subject of this DD. Nevertheless, please respect the opinion of your fellow forum user, please, and take the discussion down a notch.

Fine. Everyone has different sensibilities on how stuff is written and presented. The world is a big place.

My real concern is that with all this animosity we don't send to PDX the "wrong message". I think it's important they know without ambiguity that when they choose postpone DLCs to focus on bugs, tech dept, AI and UI improvements instead we are actually super happy. And I say that because more often than not that is not what actually happens and as a consequence the user experience suffers horribly (yet EU is a happy place in this regard).

I strongly agree on this, that's why I explained my downvote and expressed support for their work.
Given that we should all be more patient, I'm afraid that the animosity in the forums has been exacerbated by a sort of perfect storm: CK2, EU4 and Stellaris had their latest DLCs released near the Christmas window for obvious reasons, and this left most of them in need of some tuning in a time frame in which lots of people have more time to kill. Adding on this, then followed an inevitable news vacuum that was harder to fill with the usual development "relay race" of different games, since 3 major Paradox titles over 4 (5 with I:R) were synchronized. Maybe a different scheduling in the future could help mitigating this kind of situation.

We'll have a 64bit-ddiary tomorrow: https://twitter.com/DDRJake/status/1097429501477376000

Makes me kind of curious when we'll see some real content again. Next month? April? I hope it doesn't take that much longer anymore. Anyway, bug- and tech-fixes are always nice. I just hope the content-designguys have something to show us soon and get the hype started. Maps, mechanic-teasers, etc.
