EU4 - Development Diary - 18th of September 2018

Hello! We have a lot to get through today as I’ll be unveiling the majority of the new content coming in the free 1.27 ‘Poland’ update. Let’s get to it:

As the name implies, much of the new content in the Poland update is focused on Poland itself.

poland.png

We’ve given the map a facelift to reflect not only the 1444 Polish-Lithuanian-Mazovian borders but also the later partitions. Here we can see several additional provinces including Chelm rudely protruding into Lithuania.

The Polish mission tree has also been expanded. This tree will help you on your way to restoring the Jagiellonian empire through personal unions, as well as avenging the defeat at Varna and of course investing in Eastern Poland. The mission tree expands when you form the Commonwealth.

A new event chain - The Prussian Confederation - puts the Teutonic Order in a precarious position in 1444. If the Teutons are unable to deal with its unruly citizens quickly, Poland may take the opportunity to march in to restore order.

lithuania.png

Here we see the new province layout for Lithuania. Its previously oversized provinces have been split up into smaller chunks, and a fort in Lubnie makes Ruthenia more defensible against Russian aggression.

Lithuania's newly expanded mission tree focuses on the development of Ruthenia, and can also lead to a union over Poland and Muscovy.

We’ve added some new national ideas to minor nations in this region, displayed below:

romania.png

The Romanian nations, Wallachia and Moldavia, have each seen their starting province count increase from 3 to 5.

The new Romanian mission tree guides the player toward building a coalition against the Ottomans and driving them from the Balkans; they can even impale the Sultan himself.

Speaking of impalement, Vlad the Impaler is very likely to show up after his father’s death to sow violence and mayhem against any who dare oppose him.

We haven’t forgotten to add some flavour to Moldavia either; Moldavia is now an independent nation guaranteed by Poland. Early in the game an event chain will have Prince Roman, exiled in Poland, attempting to seize the throne. This will decide Moldavia’s fate as a march under Poland or Hungary or as an independent nation.

tartar.jpg

The Tatar hordes have had their mission tree greatly expanded. No longer limited to the conquests of Russia and Ruthenia, the Tatar missions will lead the player through the bloody conquest of the former Mongol Empire.

Speaking of which...

mongol.png

The Mongol Empire is a new formable tag with some very steep requirements. You’ll have to conquer the majority of Genghis Khan’s empire, having first formed Yuan, the Golden Horde, or the Ilkhanate. Should you succeed in this herculean task, you’ll be rewarded with the new Great Mongol State government reform (or government type for non-Dharma owners). The Great Mongol State functions very much like a steppe horde without many of the drawbacks, but its greatest advantage is the ability to recruit Banner units from primary culture provinces in the style of the Manchus.*

* Availability of Banner units is dependent on owning Mandate of Heaven; this feature will otherwise be replaced with a discipline bonus.

Here's some more national ideas:

Finally, a new batch of government reforms will shortly be available to Dharma owners.

Venetian Government (also available as a government type to non-Dharma owners) is a special variety of Merchant Republic with a new kind of election: Lottery. In governments with Lottery election, corruption is reduced, rulers rule for life, are generated to be much older, and have weighted random stats. Elections occur only when the ruler dies. In an election, you are presented with 3 candidates each of which would cost Republican Tradition to elect directly. Alternatively, you can let the Lottery decide and one of the three candidates will be chosen at random for no republican Tradition cost.

For those of you not playing as Venice, the new Sortition government reform will enable Lottery elections for any Republican nation.

At a disturbingly late point during development, we realized that we already had a government reform named Sortition and realized we needed to replace it. We came up with 2 new reforms in the 9th tier for Republican governments:

Appointment by Committee reduces advisor costs and allows an extra possible advisor.

Bureaucratic Apparatus reduces minimum autonomy in Territories.

Last but not least, we’ve added 2 new government reforms for Indian nations, available for all nations with the Marathas and Rajputs estates respectively:

Permanent Marathas Council gives +5% discipline, and changes the Recruit Advisor interaction to instead spawn a general with +1 shock. Enacting this reforms will make the Marathas more loyal and influential, while having the opposite effect on the Nobles.

Governmental Purbias Register gives +5% morale recovery speed, and changes the Enlist Purbias interaction to give both fire damage and extra discipline to your Rajput regiments. Enacting this reforms will make the Rajputs more loyal and influential, while having the opposite effect on the Nobles. Rajput regiments themselves have been rebalanced to now have -25% Army Drill Decay, -50% Reinforce Cost, and 5% Morale as a base.

That’s all for today! Next week @DDRJake will be revealing the full 1.27 changelog. In the meantime, I’ll be available in this thread to answer questions on the upcoming content.

I really like your work guys, but I still can't feel but a slight disappointment in the lack of a finishing touch in some of the new provinces. I hope you guys can still implement some of the valid feedback that has been posted here. Issues like:

- Wrong placement of cities in Romania: Iasi, Suceava, Tighina and Buzau are all in the wrong location. Might be because of the wrong locations of the rivers there.
- Wrong placement of cities in Poland/Red Ruthenia: Lwow should be placed under Belz. Tarnow (if that's also the capital city of that province, as it should be) should be placed under Sandomierz.
- Wrong naming of provinces: Notec is a river, not a province. I suggest you guys just name it after the city. The Netze district was a Prussian province, not a Polish one. It's like calling a province after the Danube or Rhine.
- Wrong province-name altogether: Giurgiu was a Romanian town under Ottoman control since the 1420's to maintain and control the other side of the Danube. Its name really has to change (Bucharest could be a good option, even if it wasn't founded yet (doesn't seem a problem for other cities around the world, so why would it here?).
- The border with Silistre is still very wrong, but that can be excused if the Balkans will receive an update later. The placement of Kilia is also on the wrong bank of the Danube.
- I really hope that the capital city for Podlasie is Drohiczyn, as Bialystok was still a small village and never reached much fame within EU4's timeframe.
- As others have pointed out; the names of many Lithuanian provinces don't match with the Lithuanian language. Please gather the feedback to make sure that the (dynamic) province-names make sense.

I and others can provide sources to back-up those claims if you can't find them anywhere or to help you guys out. But it's really bugging me and a lot of others. You can also easily search for the city-locations on Google Maps. Don't get me wrong, your work is awesome and I love the new Polish provinces, but it just lacks a finishing touch here and there that would mean so much.

I just hope we can get an answer and maybe even an update, because I'd be disappointed if this region stays as it is now. We're all history nerds and this change would be quite minor but still affect a lot of players who really like your maps and want to keep loving them. It really adds to the authenticity of the game if the provinces are correctly named and placed. It's still around two weeks before release, so I hope something can be done. It'd be a shame if the fans have to wait for years for what amounts to a small tweak.

So, in short: I hope you guys really consider this or otherwise post why you'll not adjust the provinces before release.

Sincerely,

A map-fanatic

I really don't get all the gripes with the new Polish borders, they look great. The borders after the 1815 Treaty of Vienna are not a reflection of the diversity and complexity of the region, but rather a convenient way to cut up the borders according to the three partitioning-powers. All these fanboys of an early Reich need to calm down, the region has gotten some much needed love and I wanna thank the folks at Paradox for making it happen.

Nice diary. I see you've fixed Rivne's name, but a few other provinces might also use custom names.

Bransau was Brasław until now which is Polish name. Bransau is a German name, so still incorrect - in Lithuanian it's Brėslauja.
Lida is named Lyda in Lithuanian.
Nowogródek is Naugardukas in Lithuanian.
Słuck is Sluckas in Lithuanian.
Wiłkomierz is Ukmerge in Lithuanian, and actually ethnic Lithuanian land. It's older name is Vilkmergė.
Winnica is Vinycia in Lithuanian.

Owrucz and Zaporoże are not that simple, but Owrucz might be Ovruch (from Ruthenian/Ukrainian) and Zaporoże might be renamed after city of Krivoi Rog, which is an older city than Zaporizhia and has a Lithuanian name of Kryvyj Rihas.

Also, as almost all of the provinces in Kingdom of Poland are named after cities, maybe it would be a good idea to rename those three:

Kujawy to Inowrocław or Toruń;
Noteć to Nakło (nad Notecią);
Podole to Kamieniec (Podolski)?

I agree with everything here, and would expand on one thing that, in the picture in the OP, the province north of Vilnius is named "Wilkimierz", which seems to be a combination of Polish terminology with Lithuanian, but in the end neither. The Polish name for the region was, as @ViperJay pointed out, Wiłkomierz, and and Lithuanian name was, at the time, Vilkmergė, so it should therefore be Vilkmergė.

This response, to "Does Poland have Missions on Moscow or Sweden"... very exciting.

I'm not sure if this is part of the "Break the Rus" Mission, but Poland/Commonwealth should get missions to culture-convert Lwow, Gdansk & Vilnius so as to reflect historical Polonization in those areas, which currently is not at all shown/reflected in any meaningful way.

I hope one day you all re-vamp Poland's Elective Monarchy System/Sejm in a big way, it'd be really worth it to help show the complexity of the Commonwealth, and other elective monarchies/republics at that. I even have a suggestion for the DLC-title...
SERENISSIMA
;)

I also strongly fear that the new Venetian Government would be the worst in Monarch Point generation, since you can get a life-long ruler with worse stats than the other republic’s ones.

The ruler will be old which means life-long is not excactly what we think when we hear "life-long" and even then you could still make your 60 year old Doge a general which will get rid of him very fast. On top of that you get to pick between 3 different (randomly generated?) rulers. One of them will most likely be good, you won't have to worry about RT seemingly and you get less interrim bad rulers (old 6 point rulers that are not worth leveling up or young rulers still in process of leveling up). I think alltogether it will probably even out.

Jesus H. Christ.. guys, team.. Did you not boost some of Poland in the Russian and Hungarian update?
Why not focus on a totally different area of the world? South Africa needs work, so does the Caribbean, and Oceania and so on.
I appreciate all your time and effort.

This is a free update so there won't be any content packs of units.
That doesn’t mean you couldn’t update the Eastern generic units. I’ve been hoping for a generic rework like what Western Europe got. A lot of the generic units look very badly outdated.
Only actual empires will have 'Empire' in their name. BRB Adding Achaemenid Empire
So Ottoman Empire and Mughal Empire when?

Can we see the Mongol Empire ideas?

Will new events be in this patch? They were pretty lacking in dharma.

No word on religious?

I like the Venice stuff and with the ability to impale the Sultan, I’m glad I’ve been putting off my Dracula’s Revenge run :D

Hello, You add new mission for Tatars, it is cool, but can you also add Tatar Dynamic Province Names for Tatar nations please. I did a great job of looking for names and would be glad if you added it to the game.
link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XtF62xgypSl6Fl8zLozqIEROrHJJrJKisKZnk31SBcY/edit?usp=sharing
Also I created thread for discussion https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...jani-turkish-and-tatar.1117099/#post-24639918
And I write Azerbaijani Turkish Dymic Province Names
link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-kfFUTIOiykUcY--f1uCPIAg3FFEP-UkJxfwykt-euk/edit?usp=sharing
Please add in EU4, I will be happy

P.S. The image in green is marked by the provinces, to which there are dynamic names for the Tatar cultures.
UPD: Where i can get new province names list with ID?

Some thoughts:

  1. I hope Poland no longer is stupidly eating so much of the Teutons that it incurs a colaition of Denmark and a lot of northern Germany. Currently, like 80% of my AI Polands die this way.
  2. It would also be cool for Poland to more closely follow history and vassalize the Teutons. If not, they should face the consequences. The Teutons were still somewhat of a Imperial vassal.
  3. The TO should be able to vassalize the LO by event/mission should both of them survive the first few decades, After all, the Livonian Order was a subject of the Teutons until 1435.
  4. The shown province setup can not reproduce the partition of Poland following the Congress of Vienna. That's gonna sting all those that for some reason want to recreate the German borders of 1871.

In history it took one war to conquer half of Teutonic order land and vassalize them (i am refering to game timeframe). In current game its impossible due warscore cost of those actions not mentioning all of Europe creating coalition against you.

Will there be opportunities to execute enemy rulers outside of Wallachia?

Jesus H. Christ.. guys, team.. Did you not boost some of Poland in the Russian and Hungarian update?
Why not focus on a totally different area of the world? South Africa needs work, so does the Caribbean, and Oceania and so on.
I appreciate all your time and effort.
In the past year they have updated, as per there own message in last weeks dev-diary, " Japan, The Far East, The Near East and now India." Is it really so wrong for them to update a part of Europe after all that time? A part, mind you, that needed some love. I'd even argue that they should re-focus on Europe for the next update, and then head back out to the big bag world. That's why this game is so good, because the Devs put in so much time into each region. This area may not matter to you, that's fine, but for many it is a richly diverse part of history they are interested in, and for us it is a thrill that this is being expanded upon.

Lastly, no, Poland did not get a "boost" in the Russian and Hungarian updates, Russia and Hungary did, crazy how that works.

I've noticed that as well. The naming of Lithuanian provinces is a mess. Currently, Lithuanian provinces are named in:
-Polish: Owrucz, Równe (except with the missing "ó"; seriously, stop ignoring diacritics, devs), that whole "Wilkimierz" and Sluck
-Lithuanian: Trakai
-Russian: the rest
Even core Lithuania is a mess. While Trakai is named in Lithuanian, the bordering Kovno is named in Russian. And it's getting worse with each update to that region.

@neondt What's the requirements for the Ilkhanate? Favorite nation in history tbh.

I'm sorry but you are wrong. It was Polish king who was made a king of Bohemia in 1470s and then in 1490 became also a king of Hungary so the missions in this patch make sense and I dont see how Bohemia should be getting PU over hungary ? But do please provide me with evidence for your claims and I'll take this back
relative of the polish king became the king, not the polish king himself, making effectively branch line
and the PU over hungary makes sense - Premyslids got it (although shortly) and even over Poland
Charles IV (Bohemian king and HRE emperor) got the hungarian throne for his son Sigismund, Wenceslaus IV kicked the bucket and Sigismund should inherit, unrest and shit comes, and he later becomes HRE emperor (Bohemia is electorate) - this mishmash union could be even mission for the hungarian side
and if you gonna spout nonsense about how it didnt happen in the eu4 timeframe, look at Byzantium mission tree
tbh all 3 kingdoms should get some missions on the other ones

I know others have mentioned it too, but I really hope they add some more depth to the Teutonic Order and the Livonian Order in this patch too because they are such interesting nations to play that could use a bit more attention.

Is there any Chance that we can get the Mongol Empire tag associated with one of the existing graphical content packs? It seems lackluster to have generic unit models after putting so much effort into forming a nation. Maybe It can get the units for Mongolia or Oirats?
