So what have we done lately? Well, plenty of stuff that will go into 1.14 and the next expansion. Lots of stuff we are not ready to talk about yet, but this week we'll give you information about some new systems.

The first one is the new areas system, which will be a part of the patch.

Areas are a new type of region, usually consisting of between 3-6 provinces, and with no province being in more than one area. A new areas mapmode will show you which provincs are in what areas. This will be used for various mechanics we will explain more next week.

And then we have a feature which will be part of the as of yet unnanounced expansion.. The Victory Cards system. This is a feature that is primarily designed for multiplayer games, as it is introduced to reduce hugboxes and permanent allianceblocks.

At the end of a campaign, the top countries end up with 15-20K in score, so our goal was to create a system that could provide 30-50% more score for those that are willing to go for it.

And thus, we introduce the Victory Cards.

Starting in 1450, and every 100 years after you will be able to get a Victory Card if you have at least 300 development. Of course if you don't qualify for 1 at a given date, you will get 1 as soon as you qualify for it.

A victory card grows in score value every month if you own, control & core every province in its area, and it takes 20 years to grow to its maximum, and 20 years to drop to zero from its maximum.

The area selected is slightly randomised, but average development matter & it must be adjacent or within 1 seazone of any part of your nation or its subjects. Only provinces belonging to potential or current rivals are take into consideration, and you are far more likely to get ones on nations ahead of you in score or belonging to other players.

The first card is worth 1000, second 2000, third 3000 and the final 4000 points.

Here I've loaded up a savegame from 1.13 in our office MP campaign, and in the first 2 months I've gotten 2 victory cards to basically fight my game-long-hugbox-friend France.

o_O Looks like I'm one of the few who like the change.

The endgame score is purely aesthetic. Your nation's strength, income, capability does not change from accumulating victory points. The card system gives players motives to try warring other human players without forcing those uninterested to play along the forced path.

Unless Paradox gives in-game bonuses such as income boost as part of victory cards, I see no reason why one wants to get rid of it. Ignore it if you want to.

Love how everyone is trying to make it sound like nobody at all cares about the score.

I do. It gives me an objective to go after when I got too big. If I'm second, I'll try my best to improve my economy, military & diplomatic relations to get first. Even on multiplayer games, which I play for many hours every week.
Honestly, I really wish my friend in MP games would stop treating player controlled countries as special. Everyone is often too afraid to attack another player because they fear they're gonna make him mad., while player vs player wars, imho, are some of the funniest part of the game. You're gonna lose? No problem, losing is fun. You probably won't get annexed in a single war anyway. But even if you can get fully annexed, you could ask to become the vassal of the winning player.

Anyway, if this new system is gonna make players go to war against each other more often, I totally welcome it.

You can make the score screen appear at the end of each multiplayer session with a more flashy and simple look. That will make people care more about scores.

I personally don't care about scores, but I welcome it if players wage wars against another human players more often.

I do like the idea they implemented too, anyway there is a problem if the game shift from the sandbox stile to a more competitive game.

If there is no winning condition and you get bad luck you will just say "ok whatever", while if there is a winning condition you will say "i've lost because of that damn event" and the bad feeling continue until the end of the game.

if a short game, such as dota, csgo or magic the gathering (notice, competitive games), this is fine, since even if you feel bad the game will last no more than half an hour, while in EU the game will go one for other 20 hours. and maybe you will have no way to win. So the bad feelings in multiplayer will increase if there is a game winning condition.

and there is no way to fix this, one could say that with the right mechanics one can come back from a bad early game, but this mean that what you do in the early game had no affect on the winning conditions, again a bad feeling.

This is well documented flaw of long lasting competitive games, and there is nothing you can do to fix it. On top of that EU does not have any kind of game ending conditions, (like the ones of CIV, where even if you lose you only have to wait for that space ship) and if it's clear who will win in 1700 you will still have to play until 1821, again a bad thing for everyone except who is winning.

The best thing they could do is adding a set of victory card that is not related to the score, with really hard task to accomplish, like own every tropical wood producing province or reach a total of x development, but every player will be able to complete his victory card at the same time. So even if the other guy completed his task and has more point, you still have something funny to do that can be done. and everyone will be able to win at the same time

There is one.. its on the screen at all times.. You score and your rank.

There is not even a leaderboard of the country ranks, or charts etc. a the end of a game to tell you about how well you did. Just some arbitrary score like "Spain : 7000" which mean nothing.

Can this account be ban already? It is INCREDIBLY clear that this account was made for trolling...
And if you need a technicality for the ban all them insults seems reasonable to me...
Also if you want a market bubble play Victoria 2 and wait until 1900 that will show you a bubble(I couldnt resist lol)

Oh, I had forgotten this game has a score.
I'm guessing the reason for some to complain about this would be if the ai really tries to enforce this mechanic.
Other than that, meh I can't see anything bad by adding to a number with no effect and nobody cares about. On the other hand I can't really see anything good about it either...

If it turned out to be an important thing I could see allies just trading provinces to abuse it.

I kind of want STOP THE GREED NOW to stay. He's like an entertaining little troll-pet :p

Tell you guys what, starting with the next dev diary I'm going to institute a new rule that goes 'stop complaining that the week's dev diary isn't about the precise thing you wanted a dev diary about'. You're of course free to critique the actual contents of the dev diary, but the flurry of 'why isn't the dev diary about X' posts is getting very old.

Good for you Wiz, they have no right to complain because it isn't what THEY wanted. It is YOUR decision.

I really like this change! It's not like you have to play for those cards, but if you want a different challenge, this do seem intresting! *two thumbs up* 1

Does anyone know of any more news concerning the next expansion and what it will be about? I for one would like to see some improved trade mechanics (less oriented towards europe), maybe a better supply system, and maybe some better westernisation/tech group mechanics.

So just wondering, anyone have any news about it? I dont see any on the front pages of the forum.

Just to echo what's being said here, I don't, and I don't know anyone who does, care one lick about points. It would surely not entice me to turn on a long time MP ally. Although, I like the train of thought. I've stopped playing MP EU4 because every game is dominated by hugboxing.
