EU4 - Development Diary - 27th of November 2018

Good day all and welcome to a new development diary for EU4. We have by now covered most all of the gameplay content and features coming with Golden Century and the 1.28 Spain Update. Today, let's get to some of the eye candy.

As Golden Century is an Immersion Pack, that means it comes with new unit models built-in. It also contains new music focused on Spain and the New World.

First, let's check out the Units. While the majors in the region already enjoy their own unit models, we reached out to those who have long deserved their own and have added infantry models for Granada, Navarra, Galicia/Leon and Salé. Each get 4 different models, one for each Tier of unit as warfare evolves with the integration of the firearm.

Granada will do well to see themselves into the era where they can use firearms, but at least they'll look dapper until then.

Navarra may have lost her coast, but she gained a good mesh of functional and elegant gear.

Leon and Galicia, the releasable nations from Castile, both share their unit models, but keep a distinct look from their Castilian brothers.

Salé, the potential pirate nation of the Maghreb, already look like they are up to no good, and appear to have already plundered rifles.

Now the plan was to make 5 different unit packs and have Andalucia as our 5th set. As we were concepting these designs though, we felt there was too much overspill between Granada and Andalucia model designs. As such, we decided that Granada and Andalucia would share their models, and we would still make a 5th set of models, but for our new additions in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Pirates themselves have received new unit models, evolving through the ages and, while we resisted the call of Hollywood designs, keeping to a more fitting, if threatening look.

Although the addition of unit models in Golden Century is not limited to the units on land, we have also given the Iberians, as well as the Berbers, their own Ship Designs. These extend to all 17 different unit models seen in the game.

Let's use the heavy ships as an example, for the Iberians they will get new ship looks from the smallest of Carracks

To the mightiest of threedeckers.

Similar story for the Berbers.

As a final note, there will be three pretty sweet music tracks added with Golden Century. Sadly I cannot share these in all their glory right now, but we do have a preview of one of the tracks which was played during our First Look stream of Golden Century last week. Check it out here:

(43:30 timestamp for the music)

That's our lot for today. We'll be back next week to shed light on the ten new Achievements which will be added in 1.28 Spain.

I'm tired of constructive criticism, I gave a good amount in previous developer diaries, nothing has been done. At least I'm going to joke about this situation. I'm not the first one joking about the Vasa though, i felt it belonged here.

Mate, you wanna whine and cry go right ahead, I was just trying to explain why there are no replies from the devs.

Alright everyone, this is getting out of hand and this is the one and only warning I will give you.

- Do NOT insult other community member's
- Do NOT derail the thread
- Do NOT break the rules
- Do NOT make this thread into a "ehrmawgawd this isn't what happened, this is what happened!"

If you want to discuss things that are off-topic please do so in a PM with the person in question or on the off topic forum.
From this point on anyone that keeps this up will be given a warning (which may result in a suspension) and the post deleted.

So what we have to say is we love this DLC and the units of this DD are very nice?

I think nobody has insulted anyone. All are educated opinions (frustrated, but educated).

I think a lot of people here would be put at ease if the issues were acknowledged and a promise would be given to share a future vision for the game with the community. Doesn't have to be immediate; I'd fully understand it if it took some weeks of discussion internally. Better done right than done quick right? Another possible sign of goodwill, would be to acknowledge the fact that this DLC has less content compared to similar content packs like Third Rome. A way to do that could be to put the price on half of the usual €10-.

I would be happier with paying a monthly sub for a COMPLETE GSG with well thought out mechanics, instead of this current system where we buy superficial DLCs every few months.

I totally want to keep supporting paradox , but for me, the game isnt getting more fun , more immersive or just better with all this dlc's. There will come a point where i wont care to buy them anymore, even on discounts.

And what you gonna do? Start banning everyone complaining? Because it seems like more than half of the community.
Not at all, but off topic posts, "Omg this is so baaaad" and comments like that will be deleted and the poster warned.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, we have no problems with customers disliking features, but there are two ways to deal with it.
1. You can be polite, factual and to the point (We very much appreciate this!)
2. You can be a trollish whiner that complains, doesn't give any feedback and just goes "ehrmawgawd worst thing ever, devs don't care, you didn't do what I wanted!" (this is the stuff that will be deleted and infracted).

Yes they will, dont test them, i learned the hard way, your comment will not last 5 mins btw. Dont try to act sassy, respect their rules.
Well, let people see how Paradox handles criticism then. Is they who need us to buy their stuff, not the other way around.

Talking about the DLC, in a DD of the DLC, is not an off topic post.

I'm just glad Andalucia may finally escape from the disgusting default Muslim tech group unit renders.

I am not mad at Spain getting an immersion pack, but it is obvious that it is severely undercooked.

Third Rome and Rule Britannia made Russia and UK overpowered, which is a problem in itself, but this is the first immersion pack where you can pay for the chance of nerfing its subject countries. Spain was *the* european power for over a century and a half during this time frame. Even for half a century after the Armada (for some reason nobody ever mentions the English Armada that tried to invade Spain one year later and was similarly humiliated) it was the foremost land power in Western Europe while France tried to come back from the Wars of Religion. What have we gotten instead? Memes and boosts to Spain's enemies! Golden Century is as if Rule Britannia had consisted of a couple extra provinces in England, an entire mechanic based in Blackadder references and boosts to french military ideas.

Oh, at least Spain gets some attention from the devs by being made crappier. Portugal just gets ignored outright other than for a couple modifiers that require another DLC to unlock.

The thing is, they predict that there is a silent majority who will happily buy the DLC, and they're most likely right - that's just what I've noticed though, by looking at the amount of purchases for the individual DLCs of recent years, and I have also heard the opinions of those EU4 players who don't use this website.
If you go to Reddit.com/r/eu4 people usually are a little more excited than people here, but today they seem to be raging

I would expect that from Reddit - I'm not on there myself, I just communicated with the people I know play EU4 in person, and they are quite keen to get this DLC, not all for the same reasons though. I mostly want it for the unit renders for Andalucia and Granada, along with the new missions and orders they are getting. The rest I could really care less about though.

There have been some really fantastic suggestions in the forums for features/changes to balance/geographic and area redraws to better reflect reality and improve game play. Shame that the first global empire will apparently continue to have 15% Trade Efficiency split between two ideas.

Precisely! The unit models don't even look that well rendered and they don't show Castile, Portugal or Spain, the real nations that need new unit models.

Actually is funny that Portugal was indeed a historical rival of Castile for expansion in the Atlantic, that's what the treaties of Alcaçovas and Tordesillas were for,

and Aragon was friendlier as they share the same dinasty but in game Aragon use to rival Castile and Portugal has the historical friend modifier

You call it funny.
I call it sad.

It seems that being civil is not in the stars today. I think it is okay to be passionate about a game you love, but the behavior I'm seeing cannot be described other than bashing and demeaning other people who have different opinions. Of course the devs won't listen to your comments if all you do is be unreasonable. I feel sorry for the people that spent countless of hours into making this immersion pack, even though it isn't a 100% of what a part of the community wanted.
