EU4 - Development Diary - 28th January 2016

Hello everyone, today we’ll start talking about 1.16 and what it will contain. The development team is busy working on 1.15.1 at the same time, which we hope is out ASAP.

One of the fun part of working on the Europa Universalis series over the last decade has been the constant evolvement of the map. Today we’re proud to announce some of the map changes for 1.16, with a quick look of Europe.

Ireland in Crusader Kings II is known as tutorial island, as an entire game in itself. In EU so far, ireland have not been properly represented, and more been shown as poor as it became after a long time of english rule. Now Ireland is richer in 1444, and not just a quick conquest for England within 5 years. Ireland also have 9 provinces, where it had five before, and several new interesting nations to play.

We’ve also tweaked the map to better borders and provinces in Hungary, and I hope you’ll enjoy this setup.

We also made a complete overhaul of how cultures work to remove the ties to language, and tie them more together to similar cultures, to create more historically plausible countries and relations.

Now, for some community fun, try to find as many changes on the map compared to 1.15 in this screenshot and list below!

Next week I’m back talking about a new concept that is getting in the game for 1.15, which can be seen in the topbar on these screenshoys.

So with Ireland and Russia getting new tags and provinces does this mean we should be hopeful about Japan finally being fixed?

Fixed that for you.

It's a good bet they are still byzantine.
I would imagine so.

If anyone's interested, actual Crimean Gothic writing was found just a month ago.

(articles in Russian)
Written in Wulfila's Gothic alphabet, many centuries after it fell out of use everywhere else.

edit: just for comparison, here is a page from Wulfila's Bible, originally written by Bishop Wulfila in the 4th century as he converted the Visigoths to Arianism.

I'm learning the Gothic alphabet, and both are coherent to me. They're the same alphabet, used many centuries apart.

The changes to Ireland and Hungary look good.

I don't know how I feel about the updated culture dynamics. Seeing western Russians referred to as "Ryazanian" and northern Russians as "Novgorodian" is a bit odd...

Love the diving up of Ireland, its good to see my favorite country get some love. Although I feel like Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and Breton should all be part of a Gaelic/Celtic culture group.

may i have suggestion what a try make culture 3 tipes like religion ... it will be better then this tipe etc slovak will be in east slavic ... but not heatred by hungarian so better accept rate ... just for more correct info and not nerf for hungary

Well, where else would they put it?
Mayhaps the Germanic culture group, which would be somewhat appropriate seeing as though they were described as being akin to Germans by travelers as late as the 16th century. But the Byzantine culture group suffices. I'm not entirely happy with the situation, because the Gothic culture more represents the Greek or Greekified upper class of Theodoro, and not the actual Gothic population (which still clearly existed, as evidenced by the fact that someone fluent in Crimean Gothic still existed to teach Ogier de Busbecq some Crimean Gothic when he was in Constantinople as Habsburg ambassador in the 16th century) but I digress. It's a tiny one province culture, the fact that it is even in game is enough for me. I just want it in CK2.

What you said is factually wrong.
Anatolian Turks or simply Turks are a mix of Anatolians and Turkmen who had a pretty big Persian influence on them.
The Ottoman and all the other Anatolian Beylicks spawned from the Seljuk Empire which in itself was a Turkic Empire whose big influence was the Persian culture.
Well you might be right about that. Still, turkey should not be in arab group. If you say that the administration/nobles spoke the same language as the arabs did, they didn't the turks and nobles spoke turkish not arabic. Also what is culture based on? Is it language? is it ethinicity? Because it looks like paradox is using both and it conflicts. They should stick with language groups, and have language branches, so that german and scandinavian cultures are more similar than german and aztec

So by that logic, Iberia, France and Italy should all be one big Romance group. Culture and Culture groups in this game are abstractions, for gameplay purposes, EU4 is not meant to be an atlas of late Medieval culture, it's a video game. The level of nationalistic butthurt every time they make changes to the cultures and culture groups is laughable.

Russian culture is divided between Muscovite, Novgorodian and Ryazanian. I have mixed feelings about this (was there really enough differences between people of Novgorod and muscovites to justify separate cultures? I don't know.). But it's great that you finally divided scottish culture between lowlands (english group) and highlands (celtic group).

Originally that's what the divide was in EU3 but the issue was the revolt risk was too high and the tax income was impacted resulting in Scotland folding like wet spaghetti. I was hoping that Scotland would get two or three new provinces whenever Ireland got its new provinces (they've been hinting at an Ireland improvement for a while). Right now Scotland will just fold way, way too quickly and it will be even weaker with an extra culture impacting its manpower, production and taxes.

I do hope that the next part of the map to get some love will be Scotland.

Are those border changes in eastern Scandinavia that I see? Johan, I love you.

There isn't anything to say that Scotland won't get extra provinces - this is the first DD for the patch after all. From Wiz's Twitter, there's a map showing new provinces in France and southern England, and from the Iceland tweet a week or so ago, it looks like the Highlands province has been divided in two (and some of the borders have moved around, but it's really hard to see exactly what has changed and if there are other new provinces). So who knows what may be brewing in Scotland for 1.16?

I've really got my fingers crossed that Madagascar will see some Ireland-type love here in an upcoming DD...

Lets hope we see some extra Scottish provinces. It would be nice to split Ayrshire and Lanarkshire from each other I miss the good old days of the province being called Strathclyde!

Saw a post on reddit (talking about the Wiz Straight) and it looks like they've switched over to the saltire too.
