EU4 - Development Diary - 30th of January 2018

Good day all. I'm led to believe that it's Tuesday and as such we should be doing our weekly tease of things to come. Last week we unveiled the new mission trees to much speculation and discussion. Indeed there were many questions and one thing I want to address are those with the modding glint in their eyes who are wondering how to use this new system. To that end we'll put together a short modding guide for using the new mission system in an upcoming dev diary.

While we will be coming back to missions for a future dev diary, I want to start talking about the features which will be in the as of yet unnamed Immersion Pack due to accompany the 1.25 Update. Let's have a couple to look at today: the Anglican Church and Industrialization.

Firstly, the Anglican Church. Currently, when the reformation hits, Christianity branches out to the Protestant and Reformed faiths. Owners of the Immersion pack will find themselves with a third option appearing in the British Isles.

But what if I were to invent a belief and disguise it as my State Religion? oh ho ho ho, delightfully devilish, Henry.

After the Initial reformation hits, A strong British nation can spawn the Anglican faith in their nation. They have the option to adopt the faith, Evangelize it (spawning a Reformation centre at great financial cost) or simply to reject it. This new faith is a different branch of the Christian group, and comes with its own bonuses and Church actions.

I like my Consorts how I like my coffee. 6 MIL

Anglicanism itself grants lower development cost and better conversion rates against heretics and like Protestantism gives you a Church of <Country Name> with its own church power. Instead of adding aspects to your church though, there are direct actions you can take to gain money, mercantilism or stability for your realm. For For Rights of Man owners, two more options will be available much to your consort's dismay. You can immediately divorce your unworthy partner and marry a new local noble.

Anglicanism is primarily a following for the British Isles. It cannot be adopted as easily as Protestantism or Reformed, however it can be spread by war from a particularly Evangelist Brit, or religious rebels can force the state to adopt it.

Moving along to Industrialization now. Our story with this feature starts with our addition of Latent resource to Europa Universalis. Certain historic locations in the world contain an untapped latent deposit of coal. When the conditions of high development and the embracement of Enlightenment are fulfilled, the province will switch to this new super trade good.

Wool is tired of being looked down on. He's hitting the gym to become a truly swole trade good
  • Coal gives:
    • +20% cheaper state_maintenance (province modifier)
    • +10% Goods Produced (Trading bonus)
  • Base price is 10
  • New Manufactory (Furnace) (ADM tech 21) Does not boost goods produced by +1, but instead boosts all goods-produced in nation by 5%.
Coal is the late-game answer to Gold mines. Highly valuable with nation-wide benefits to harness, they are truly boons for any nation to seize them. Across the world there are about 50 such mines. They are shown as stripes provinces in the Trade Good mapmode. Here is the current worldwide placement

And of course, our furnace in all its glory

Added bonus. We have consolidated manufactory listings both in the province view and macro builder as a quality of life change, so you no longer see irrelevant manufactories in the province or have to dance between manufactures to see which one will give you best bang for buck.

And finally, hawk-eyed individuals noticed last week that France's name stretched out in a way that they do not currently do in the release version of EU4. Our Magician of Optimization @Meneth stepped in to tweak out map-name generation code a touch. he has this to say:

As those of you with especially keen eyes noticed in the last dev diary, country names can now spread across sea zones.
As anyone who has played in Indonesia will know, the sea is truly the greatest enemy of good name placement. But that is no more.
Now, if a single country controls every single land province (wastelands excluded) surrounding a sea zone, the game will pretend it is part of their territory for the purposes of name placement.
There are a couple additional requirements beyond controlling every province to ensure that the results don't end up ridiculous:
- There have to be at least two different landmasses bordering the sea zone
- At least two of the bordering landmasses have to be larger than once province. Otherwise, names would stretch out to reach tiny islands, causing strange results such as Portugal's name being in the middle of the sea between Portugal proper and the Azores
The combination of these rules lead to far nicer looking names in areas with a lot of islands, while avoiding making name placement worse in areas that don't really need names stretching across sea zones."

So we finish today's dev diary with a couple examples as such:

That's our lot this week. Tune in next week for more information and features in the upcoming 1.25 Update and accompanying Immersion Pack!

@DDRJake could you change it to something more useful like less development cost?

No, anglicanism is really just papacy with local pope :)

There is nothing inherently english in wanting a divorce so if they add new mechanics it would be fun to have it aviable to choose if You want Your state church more catholic or more protestant...
You're missing the point the main influence on Protestantism (in game) in it's current form is Anglicanism, heck the divorce thing is even in there. And the sending heretics to the colonies thing. A whole bunch of them is stuff everyone did and the only Swedish thing I can spot in there is the parish registers.

To be honest, I dont really like it.

The church is ok for immersion (although I question the decision to give Britain more stuff. Other EU countries need it more).

Industrialization I do not like at all.
First I expected it to be more meaningful than just a new trade good.
Secondly, every patch so far allowed people to make more money. We are drowning in it. New ways to make money are simply superfluous without a complete economic rework to make gold valuable again past early game.
Especially in 1700 when even mediocre players have blobbed so hard so that gold is no issue any more.

As far as the game goes, Lutheranism is supposed to be represented by Protestantism while Calvinism is depicted as Reformed. With this being a sandbox game, the generic names allow for the possibility that someone other than Luther or Calvin are involved in their respective founding.

Would it make sense to change the name of Protestantism & Reformed to their non generic names for game play purpose?

Example: Protestantism = Lutheranism & Reformed = Calvinism

Coal resource could be considered in Bolu province in Ottomans. It somewhat misses timeline with couple of years:

"The discovery of coal in the Ereğli (Heraclea) region (known today as the Zonguldak coalfield) dates back to the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, and its extraction to Sultan Abdülmecid's reign.

The first specimen of Turkish coal was brought from Ereğli to Istanbul in 1822, but nothing was done for exploration and exploitation of this coal. However, in 1829, another specimen of coal was brought to Istanbul by Uzun (Long) Mehmet, a sailor and native of the village of Kestaneci, near Ereğli. This time attention was given to the discovery and the sailor received a reward of a life pension, but before he could benefit from this reward he was murdered.

The first miners requested and delivered from the Austrian Government are the Austrian Croats known to have been employed in the Ereğli Coal Mines. The correspondence between Istanbul and the embassy in Vienna show that coal production in the Ereğli Basin predates the March 1837 request by 18 months and that production started around September 1835.[3]

An investigation of Hazine-i Hassa (Ottoman Imperial Treasury Department) records in the Ottoman archives shows that regular mining activities in the Ereğli Basin started in February 1841. This is confirmed by a newspaper article published in the 14 February 1841 issue of Ceride-i Havadis.

Ereğli Coal Company, chartered by six partners (Ahmed Fethi Pasha, Rıza Pasha, Safveti Pasha, Tahir Bey Efendi, Izzet Pasha and Mustafa Efendi), excavated the coal in the Ereğli Coal Basin, initially under the auspices of Darphane-i Amire and later transferred to Hazine-i Hassa when the latter was established in 1849.[4]

Would it make sense to change the name of Protestantism & Reformed to their non generic names for game play purpose?
Nope. Reformation can start, when Luther or Calvin was child or dead (you need 95%RD). Reformation can start in every catholic state (can start in Poland, Sweden, Livonin Order or Spain).

Would it make sense to change the name of Protestantism & Reformed to their non generic names for game play purpose?

Example: Protestantism = Lutheranism & Reformed = Calvinism
I think the whole point of them being generic is for gameplay purposes. For example, it wouldn't make much sense calling it Lutheranism if the reformation triggers in southern Spain in 1547 when Martin Luther lived in Saxony and died in 1546.

EDIT: Ninja'ed by @moscal

Hum. Both of these feature seem like interesting fluff, but, unless other changes fix this, somewhat pointless gameplay wise.
Money is usually not a ressource anymore by the time coal becomes relevant. And that church looks just like a less flexible/powerful version of protestantism.

I´m okay with the church; it adds some value to roleplaying and it doesnt really affect gameplay in a bad way, Although, depending on how much stronger England gets through other new features, I´m not sure if making AI England weaker by giving them an inferior religion is good for the game. AI Potato England already makes Europe feel less historical than it should be.

The money situation on the other hand is already completely broken. The lategame stages should be about your growing empires costing more and more money and how to avoid being bancrupted. Throwing even more money at the players just seems like a strange descision.

(If the next diary is about that new gold sink mechanic you came up with to simulate the 200 years of "everyone is so poor, they had to constantly declare war on anyone to not collapse" period, I will shut up and be happy :))

Why do you see Northumbria as anything but anglo, the norse that formed danelaw were very small in number but would have come from a similar area to the anglos and saxons, and in the initial migration, the jutes only settled in the very south IIRC

Northumbria probably wasn't the best example but I think the others stand: Ireland founding the 'Anglican' church is silly. They would found the Church of Ireland.

Also, I feel that the Northumbrians might feel less English if they were an independent country while England exists.

I played quite a bit lately, and it seems the Reformation is broken. Not many center appear. Reformed rarely gets 3 centers and often gets crushed very early on. Sweden and Norway almost always stay Catholic (wasn't there an event for Sweden basically forcing Protestant). Long story short:

Will you tweak the events/weights/missions for the Reformation overall in the coming patch? Will you make it more likely that the Reformed and Anglican to join the League War?

That is just the historical start date chosen. The inheritance hasn't changed :)
So, the fact that the historical partition (seen in the start date) doesn't match the inheritance is intended?

I think I was too detallist in my previous answer:(
