EU4 - Development Diary - 6th of November 2018

It's Tuesday, and that means it's time for another EU4 dev diary. This week and next I’m going to be showing off some of the new mission trees, events, and national ideas coming in the 1.28 ‘Spain’ update and the accompanying Immersion Pack.

NB: Most mission icons are currently using placeholder art

Let’s start with the star of the show, Spain itself:

spanish missions.png

The Spanish mission tree is available to nations beside Aragon that form Spain, while Castile immediately has access to a reduced version of the tree prior to forming Spain.

For the most part these missions follow Spain’s historical expansion overseas; from the Pillars of Hercules to California and the Philippines, the Spanish Empire was one of the largest the world has ever seen. Driven by the quest for gold and silver, Conquistadors such as Cortez and Pizarro will join your service to lead the conquests of Mexico and Peru. You’ll also be encouraged to spread the word of God in the New World by establishing Holy Orders in your colonies.

Spain will also have opportunities to expand in Europe. If the Iberian Wedding or Burgundian Succession don’t work out for you, permanent claims on Naples and Wallonia will help you seize your rightful inheritance through conquest. With a foothold in the Netherlands, Spain can then pursue powerful Personal Unions with both England (depending on their religious choices) and Austria, with the ultimate goal of establishing a Universal Monarchy.

We’ve also split up the National Idea sets for Castile and Spain, as we did for England and Great Britain in Rule Britannia:

Spanish national ideas:
Code:

They are responsible for both advocating the interests of the city to the Crown and for many aspects of local governance. We must continue to establish Cabildos in newly-founded or newly-conquered cities, particularly in the New World where the need for Castilian institutions is felt most severely."
 infantas:0 "Infantas"
 infantas_desc:0 "The Princes and Princesses of the Crown are among our most valuable assets. They can be sent as royal envoys, married off to secure alliances, or appointed as regents when the need arises. It is important that we ensure that our monarch's loins continue to bear fruit."
 salamanca_scholars:0 "School of Salamanca"
 salamanca_scholars_desc:0 "Based in the University of Salamanca, the School's interests lie in fields as diverse as theology, economics, and political philosophy. As one of the leading schools of thought in the Catholic world, its entrenched presence in Castile ensures that our nation is always at the forefront of intellectual affairs."
 nueva_planta:0 "Nueva Planta"
 nueva_planta_desc:0 "It is time to assert true royal authority in the realm; under a single set of laws and a common language, a renewed and centralized Castile will directly appoint officials and enshrine the absolute rule of the monarch."

aragon missions.png

Aragon has an entirely different focus, with a distinct Mare Nostrum theme. An Aragonese player will be encouraged to dominate the Mediterranean both militarily and economically. This mission tree will take Aragon into southern France, Italy, the Maghreb, Egypt, Anatolia, and Greece.

Aragon also has access to several purely economic missions. By establishing trade dominance in the Genoa node and developing the city, Valencia will gain access to the rare Silk trade good as well as a sizable bonus to production of this luxury resource. Completing Aragon’s economic missions will reward the player with the versatile ‘Golden Century’ modifier, giving a 1% reduction to all monarch power costs for 100 years.

portugal missions.png

Portugal’s mission tree is larger than any other in the game besides Great Britain with Rule Britannia. Like the Spanish mission tree, it is largely concerned with the recreation of Portugal’s historical overseas empire, particularly in Brazil and Asia. Missions have been added for the conquests of Malacca, Oman, Ceylon, and other ports in the East. When Portugal has discovered the Far East they will have the opportunity to negotiate for the purchase of two historically important ports: Macau and Nagasaki. In Brazil the Portuguese player can lead the Bandeirantes in the search for gold in Minas Gerais and acquire an increased chance to discover Gold as a trade good in all of their new colonies.

brz.jpg

The times were not always kind to Portugal. In 1807, in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, the situation became so dire that the Portuguese court abandoned Lisbon, fled to Brazil, and made Rio the new seat of government. This will be represented in the game as a decision available to Portugal should they find themselves in dire straits. Your tag will change to Brazil, and Portugal will be released as a junior partner controlling your remaining European provinces. Note that by doing this you will lose access to Portuguese missions.

Not shown but will be in the final version: taking the decision will also change your primary culture to Brazilian.

Navarra missions.jpg

Finally we have Navarra. Navarra’s mission tree will be entirely free for anyone playing on the 1.28 ‘Spain’ patch. As you might expect, this mission tree takes the player down a very different path than history intended. Navarra must reclaim its unjustly stolen coastline, and from there pursue an invasion of France that can culminate in a Personal Union. With access to the sea, the New World beckons. In homage to the time-honoured strategy of migrating to the Americas to escape the cutthroat politics of Europe, Navarra will have the opportunity to move their capital to Terranova if they so choose.

Some of you may have noticed that Navarra’s starting monarch is also Aragon’s designated heir in 1444. A new event chain will bring Navarra under a Personal Union with Aragon if Navarra remains independent upon the death of King Afonso. If Navarra is being controlled by a player, they can of course choose to accept this union. But a truly ambitious player can instead reject the union and instantly gain a Restoration CB on Aragon.

That’s all for today! Next week I’ll be back with more mission trees and national ideas with a focus on North Africa.

Can you really afford to spend away mil in that timeframe? That's arguably the one point in time when mil points are really valuable. Now if they made it so that it cost Dip instead...

Nothing quite shows how diplomatic your king is as when he 'bargains' the collapse of enemy coastal fortresses.

Most of the arguments are that the changes are not substantial enough. The indirect worry is that the areas touched by DLCs or IPs are that the regions won't be seeing changes anymore until its their turn again in the cycle.

The fact that such a cycle exists and was created just a few patches ago is even sadder. I'm not sure what's worse: if it's a business decision from up top to pad DLCs with minimal time investment or if the dev team thinks these types of changes are actually good.

So, holy s---t, umm....

1) We got a blatantly incompetently-done map revamp to the point that the devs have acknowledged a correction thread started by forum posters; https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/a-few-suggestions-for-iberia.1123194/
2) We got a Spanish Main map revamp that makes the first point look even worse;
3) We got a flagship modification system that has pissed off Britain players and snuck a dumb Sweden meme in that everyone is mad at;
4) We got an "national idea revamp" that has changed one or two things about Castille and left everything else the same (Portugal still a paper tiger for some reason);
5) We got a mission tree revamp that, while extensive, missed huge interesting and ambitious opportunities and bloated itself with one-province-conquest missions; https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...or-iberia-no-maps-or-provinces.1124144/page-5
6) We got a bombardment mechanic that isn't even useful unless you're attacking a lvl8 fortress and cant afford artillery, or you spend extra ducats setting up a flagship as Portugal
7) We got Maritime Ideas 'nerfed' so they could be 'buffed' (plus some people are mad at Espionage, too);
8) We got a Monastic Order's mechanic riddled with unexplained issues; https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/questions-on-the-new-holy-orders.1125665/
9) We got a very questionable 'expulsion' mechanism that likely won't serve any real purpose;

Nine. That's freaking nine! Like you could kill my old cat with these problems.

I'd add to the list that Spanish have been improved...by making them worse:eek:. It reminds me of something the former president of Spain said in the Congress: "the better, the worse and the worse, the better";)

Devs, could you consider stop making random trade goods in America, if anyone wants to have random trade goods can use RNW ...
Ironically, RNW is less random in my experience, since flatlands have endless livestock, anything north enough is likely will be fur and only mountains will get ores usually.

haha, we can help to make it realistic with real trade goods, also when the europeans come there can be events to change some provinces with europeans trade goods, like livestock, wine, etc.

For example in my country there can be an event for Hernandarias who introduce livestock to the Banda Oriental.

<<The territory pastures proved to be very favourable for bovine reproduction, and the abundance of cattle attracted portuguese incursions from Brazil, Colonia del Sacramento foundation by Portugal (1678) and Montevideo foundation by Spain (1726).>>

Also wine.

IMHO Espionage/counterintelligence have a problem off design,i think it must have his own tab like the options of diplomacy,trade,estates etc...all the countries must start with a basic infrastructure of spionage/counterintelligence depending off the resources off the country,you can rise your infraestructure spending resources with it,,and also you can upgrade your spionage/counterintelligence taking spionage/counterspionage ideas.
I think it must work like it

Some suggestions
  • In the Spanish tree:
  1. The expel the Moriscos would be better that it were a decision or event, rather than a mission, since in reality it was never a national objective, but it was a political decision because they were accused of supporting the Muslim pirates. You could even make the Moriscos a special estate for the Iberian countries.
  2. In the Spanish war of succession the Spanish-French side tried to create a personal union, I think that a mission should be added to create a union with France as an added or substitute for the mission of Austrian succession, which Spain never sought and strategically, in the game, gives more unnecessary problems with Russia and Poland-Lithuania for control of central Europe, without seeing the French problem solved (great historical rival of Spain to which not a single mission related to that country has been given).
  3. Adding missions in favor of a campaign in the Maghreb, in addition to conquer the north of Morocco.
  4. Grand Britain has missions of industrialization/development, Spain should also have missions of that style, for the alt-historical case that Spain had not fallen into decline and had laid the foundations to be an industrial power.

  • Castilian ideas:
  1. The "decreto de nueva planta" should be in Spain, since its objective was to unite the courts of Aragon to those of Castilla, centralizing the state and eliminating internal borders. It does not affect an independent Castile.

Point taken, you are right. I mean, it's not like they removed something and replaced with this, it's an addition to the system.
Granted, you can argue that it was an addition that doesn't add much to the game and development time was spent on this instead of something more useful.
I'll still wait and see how this rolls out.

This isn't intended to be something you are rewarded for. Hence losing stability and prestige when you do it. It exists for roleplay and for the AI when appropriate. I think we're all a bit tired of seeing Portugal ruling over the Americas from West Africa.

Do you know why this is happening all the time? BECAUSE YOU SIMPLY INSIST KEEP LOW DEV IN PORTUGAL AND ONLY FEW PROVINCES.... one more time I say that you guys found 13/14 in Ireland.. in Scotland.. even in baleares you found 3 provinces, same about canarias with 2... Looks that Cuba will get more provinces, same about Hispanyola Island and Florida and let's see others... in canarias you found 2.... But in Portugal you insist on keeping it as a BIG LOL. You said it was "Iberian Patch" but it looks like ONLY the "Spanish Patch"... Valencia.. Galiza.. Leon.. Baleares.. Canarias.. Spanish Americas/Caribean... Portugal? Wait.. we got Aveiro! Ah.. and "you guys can buy now Nagazaki and Macau"... APLAUSE! CLAP CLAP CLAP! It's still missing Setúbal, Leiria, Minho, Santarém, Guarda, Portalegre/Castelo Branco, Elvas... Did you read in the last forums that Elvas was the most fortified city in the world? Can you imagine why? Do you know where is maybe the second most fortified city? Vilar Formoso in Guarda Region.. another one that doesn't exist in game too and that you call "Beira" in the game... You invented "The Historical Friend" betwen Portugal and Spain... Do you know how many times Spain tried annex Portugal? I think you don't... even Franco was planning ii in the 20th Century! It was the reality and you keep underating Portugal. No developments... Not enough provinces... That's why Portugal is "always getting kicked" out of Europe, at least we stil can go to Africa... The Portuguese Empire in África (excepting Moçambique maybe) sucks.. The Portuguese Guinea? NOT FOUND!.. Casamansa (Casamanse)?? NOT FOUND! Angola? 3 Provinces.. LOL Why don't you split São Tomé e Príncipe? 2 Islands... São Tomé Island and Príncipe Island? and there's another one missing too.. they are 4 Islands.. "Ano Bom" in the south, given to spanish crown and then it became "Annobón", then São Tomé, then Príncipe and in the north Fernando Pó Island, given to Spain too and became Bioko Island... Moçambique Island? Where was the first Mozambiquean Capital... Not found too.. Goa? Low dev.. Diu? Low dev.. Damão? (Daman) low dev..... Is it for lack of knowledge about Portugal? I don't think so.. Do you know that Portugal ruined the Silk Route? That Lisbon became richer and stronger then Venice after this? After the discovering of the new route to India? Did you know that when the first Portuguese Armada came back to Portugal after being in India, the cargo of only ONE (1) ship payed ALL THE JOURNEY to India! Only one ship payed all the sailors and ships from Portugal to India and then from India to Portugal, now imagine ALL the ships full of silks, spices, incenses, cottons, etc... All this in the 1500's! At that time in game, not matter if we got india.. you built 6/7 forts in all the Empire and if we have a big armada to protect trade we get bankrupcy, no sailors etc... I think you get here a lot of info here in the forums.. then for me it is because you simple don't want improve Portugal.. Simply like that! And now look's like you'll give the chance to Portugal to become a "Brazilian Territory" in Europe... a Vassalized state... omg. It's getting beautifull this!

@Anarchya
Dude, you should improve the legibility of your rant.
I agree that it's a rightful one, but you definitely need to break lines at some point.

Will the AI be weighted to take this decision if Portugal is in a tight spot? It's lame Brazil has no special ideas or missions to go with this, but I do the flavor possibility of there being more new world tags in the endgame. So it would be cool if the AI could do it.

I wouldn't go as far as RIPing it, since Dharma is still pretty enjoyable outside the stupid rampant Charter Purchases, but this DLC is definitely VERY problematic.
Yeah I know that they are trying but still the expansions were going slowly downhill since Mandate of Heaven. But I think most of the people are too critical about Paradox. They just want to give us IMMERSION. Aren't you all so IMMERSED from does incredible IMMERSION packs? Those mission trees and unit packs (which you can barely see) are giving me so much IMMERSION that I really feel like I was being robbed in 15th century. AMAZING!
I'm joking. I haven't bought any immersion pack and I love Paradox but they need to be more creative with their DLCs. And the community shouldn't buy everything they throw at them. I fear that Paradox is slowly turning into EA. Their DLCs feel more and more forced and... tasteless. Don't get me wrong I don't hate Paradox and I don't hate their policy but i find their DLCs boring. This is very subjective but I wasn't exited about any EUIV dlc since Rights of Man and I haven't bought any since Mandate of Heaven. They are just boring to me. I remember when Paradox expansions gave you more freedom, more possibilities, when they added more to sandbox gameplay and replayability. But now they just add more fancy buttons and tie your hands. I don't know maybe it's just my feeling.

Pfft, speak for yourself. :v

I would respond in a very similar way Anarchya did if I wasn't afraid this thread would be locked too.
