Stellaris Dev Diary #171 - Federations Stream

Hello everyone!

This week we’re back with another dev diary! I apologize in advance for it being a shorter one, but don’t worry, we aim to make up for it with a stream!.

Later today at 17:00 CET we will be hosting a stream over at Twitch where we will be talking about Federations and showing off all the features in more detail (such as all the federation perks). We will also be announcing the release date for the Federations expansion and showing off a cool new trailer!

If you have things you want us to show on stream, please don’t be afraid to mention them here!

See you on the stream!

---

We announced that Federations will be released on March 17th!

You can watch the continued story trailer here:

You can also watch the VOD of yesterday's stream

Also, it seems like every Federation Type has at least 1 +Crisis Damage perk. Unless that 'new crisis behavior' we got a sentence about a few dev diaries ago is substantial, crises are about to become even less of a threat...

The punch-line is that the AI's capacity to dismiss the "crisis" as a threat is because it actually isn't a threat.

I missed the first half of the stream. Did anyone see what the penalties for going over Admin Cap were?

Didn't see it. I think all we saw were empires below the admin cap.

I did catch that Psi Theory and Psionic Pops reduce Empire Sprawl, though. So there's that.

A neat trailer going off the previous one, about a federation created to prevent a war, with one belligerent party being bullied into it and eventually seeking to break free.

Too bad it'll never actually happen ingame. Due to how Trust works, and the resulting Opinion Polarization, once that empire is in the federation it's time for Best Friends Forever.

That seems to be a bit less the case recently. I have had unstable federations in recent games. Once because an empire ethics shifted back to spiritualist after a liberation war, and another after a group of aAI invited a rival of one of the empire members. Not common, but it can happen

This does raise I good point. With Ethics Shifting now presumably working, it is possible that AI Empires will change their ethics much more frequently than we have previously seen. This could potentially cause more frequent changes in alliances as the game progresses, what with opinion modifiers changing as ethical and policy differences shift. I don't know if it will have much of an affect on long standing alliances though (that +500 opinion cap from envoys is no joke).

So our fear has become reality? Hiveminds again getting nothing. Last time we asked if Hegemony would be possible to create for Hiveminds. Now we have confirmation that it is indeed not possible. Meanwhile, Machine empires can create the Research federation or, as we can see here, Rogue Servitor can create a Hegemony.

Extremely dissapointed how Hiveminds continue to get ignored when it comes to many cool things in the game.

The fear has been reality for some time. It's just continuing to be so.

Gestalts won't even be able to do Arena Combat. Like, wth?

... also, I still think that the GC resolution chains only showing you the 'total combined' modifiers of the entire chain before it is stupid. It makes it so much harder to tell what resolution does what. I can't imagine why they thought this makes it easier.

Imagine if they did this for other things, like say, the +Research Output techs. First one is +25%, then +50%, then +75%! Wow, what a great tech! Only, it's not, each one is only +25%.

And now, look at this. Hiveminds, which are considered a Psionic entity, since they can talk to the Prethoryn just like Psionic Ascended empires, automatically forfeit not only Arena combat but also Psionic Combat. This is beyond dissapointing. This expansion is already looking like another slap in the face for Hivemind players considering they get left out from so many options.

... so why does the Galactic Community resolution that lets you get Consumer Goods from primitives, uh, do that? Especially if you're Passively Observing the primitives.

This week, on Zeta Reticuli's Funniest Primitive Videos! (That's almost amenities, I suppose, but they're both pretty abstract concepts).

At this point it seems like only mods will be able to fix Hives. I personally lack the ability to do so, but I'm considering learning how to mod just so Hives will actually be viable and not left in the garbage.

I refuse to accept this. Paradox put Hiveminds in the game, so I expect the added content to offer features for all empires. At this point most of the content is for non-Gestalts AND Machine empires! Why? Is the balance not already bad enough that it favours other empires over Hiveminds? Do you have to exclude Hivemind empires from all the fun events and options aswell?

I am pleasantly surprised with the release date. I had been expecting the week of March 19th (since that leaves two weeks for the promised Juggernaut Q&A and the patch notes), but the decision to go with a Tuesday release instead of Thursday is a good call.

What is the actual date?
