Stellaris Dev Diary #185: Announcing Necroids

Hello everyone!

Today we bring you some exciting news about our upcoming Species Pack! We’re happy to announce that our next species pack will be themed around death and should allow you to live death to the fullest! Check out the trailer below:

Necroids will feature:
  • 15+1 new portraits (the +1 being machine)
  • 1 new Ship Set
  • 1 new City Set
  • 1 new Room background
  • 1 new Origin
  • 3 new Civics
  • 1 new pre-scripted Empire
  • 1 new Advisor Voice
We wanted to add ships that had a more sinister or evil appearance, and I’m very happy to say we’ve made something really great. We’ll go into more detail about the ships, and give you a peek into the art process, in a future dev diary.

True to the theme, we wanted the portraits to revolve around death, but not look outright undead or decaying. We never intended the Necroids to be specifically undead, but rather themed around death. Similar to the ships, we will be doing a dev diary in the future to give you a peek into the art process, and also reveal all the new portraits. Stay tuned!

Regarding the other features, we have already shown you some of them, such as the Death Cult Civic and the Memorialist Civic. The remaining features will be revealed over the next couple of weeks, and maybe you'll even get to learn about Jeff. But for now, let’s pass the Mishar Cabal into our memories.

---

General Donnten threw her bloodied axe next to Ostiir’s severed head. The others in the Leadership Council would remember this the next time they considered interrupting her in the Mishar Althing.

She pushed past the acolytes that were coming to deal with the corpse. They were annoyed - the rites were always harder if the head was removed - but they would just have to stitch it back together.

Smiling to herself, she left the arena. At least Ostiir would be an obedient little soldier now.

if you are having fun with the game as it is.... good for you

is that what you want to hear? cause alot of people DONT have fun with stellaris, are dissapointed....and then you come in and just say "screw all of you, only i matter, screw everyone that dislikes the game cause i like the game"!?

its like, why are you commenting here

I didn't say that only i matter. If you read my later posts, you will find, that i only speak for myself. And why did i post here? Because i wanted to voice my opinion; because i read other posts here that complained about having their fun ruined by others if they say they enjoy this content pack. I agree that this game needs improvements. But my train of thought is: Look at the content-makers creating this stuff, and then getting swarmed with "i hate this because i dislike the game in it's current state". I think they deserve a little bit of encouragement, since it isn't the artists fault for having bad AI. And yes this thread has been transformed into a complaint field for bettering the game, but do you think it helps?

Again i didn't say that only i matter. I wanted to give those who DO enjoy the game right now and the people who design content something nice.

well, if i was seeing it right, there could be a Necroids-FE, so maybe bit more than just a normal Species-Pack, so, there also is potential
the AI problems some (or many) of us have (not me, cause i mostly play some hours, shut game down to change something on my own mod, start game again for a bit time, shut down for another change etc etc so i not really reach the situation where the ai makes problems and i'm mainly playing kind of RP-style, so its ok for me xD) i can understand, are annoying in single-player sessions, but at least, if there are mods out there wich do a better job, than use them and dont just complain, flame and tell how shit it is, but instead look a bit deeper, what could be a reason why the ai is working that bad...? (well within my heavy modded game it could be that the AI is worse because it can't propably use modded stuff with wrong or even no AI wights, wich seem to be the "main reason" on wich the AI works) however, i can understand that you are frustrated that pdx can't (don't) fix the problems within years (?) but on the other side, there are some games out wich don't even run without a mod, so ... yah
at last i think a dev diary isn't for flaming pdx for its problems but for talking about what is postet, there are threats for the other themes, so flame there if you truly need to and leave the dds empty. It also shows the point, if the threat, themed with the problems, gets 100 new comments each day, instead of pushing the announcements with off-topic-posts wich may not be read and just counted as "uh, so many write something to our new species-pack, it seems to be something they want" ... thats the reason why i complain about you all complaining here....
however...

this is exactly what i mean, your "superior morality" makes no sense, since it has been ALREADY explained at least 5 times in this thread that people dont blame the artists AT ALL

yet you assume, yet you point fingers, yet you want to force your "opinion", one that doesnt matter in the SLIGHTEST in this context into all of our throats because, again, you think your morality is superior, when in fact, nothing about what you are saying happens in the first place

and, again, it has been explained AT LEAST 5 TIMES why this thread in specific has now turned into a complain thread

You misunderstand me! I don't want to force my opinion. I am not morally superior. I am only a player who enjoys the game as it is right now. My final word: Go make another thread where you can collect your complaints and don#t transform every paradox-post into a complain field. Talking about context; The context of this thread is talking about a new content pack. Yet it has been derailled into another direction.

Because i see this exchange of replies going to a dark place where this thread will be closed down, here is my final word: Go make another thread where you can collect your complaints and don't transform every paradox-post into a complain field.

People like this even turn up in the complaints threads to type "well I'm not experiencing this well documented and talked about problem"

Like what the actual flip? What does popping your head up to say "I'm doing fine" achieve. I'm honestly not sure what the mentality behind such a thing is.

What it does achieve is to give others who like the game and the pack (and the content creators) a feeling that they are not completely doing wrong. Yes the Ai department is on the wrong path, but the content isn't in my point of view.

literally no one in this 21 page thread said ANYTHING about the content itself being bad

the most youd get is people saying "they didnt go far enough with the content", aside from that, NO ONE has a problem with necroids itself

I can appreciate that line of thought - the system used to do exactly that, however it was removed due to "abuse" which was never adequately explained to the community. I can understand how you might perceive that comment as toxic, however I'm inclined to disagree. I'm only pointing out a critical flaw in how people conduct themselves on an internet forum where the expectation is that they'll communicate with one another.

This isn't Facebook or Twitter, after all. If you're here, you're here to talk - not to meme or clown around. And I feel like that's something that's been lost over the last few years.

Pre-Like/Dislike system was a much better era for the forum, truth be told.
You are shouting for a confrontation. Calling it aggressive behaviour is really understating the fact.

well, thing is, i have also to agree in some points with Nawolith, and i will try to explain why:
If i would be an Artist at pdx, and i see the announcement of the new species-pack gets so many comments that it reaches 21 pages in just 3 days, i would never read all of them, cause i do not have the time to do so, i woud read some of them, maybe, and going back on my work than... so how helpful is it for us, if you tell an artist in half a million posts he never reads, how bad the ai is? right, not helpful at all, it just fills the threat with senseless flaming (well maybe not really senseless, but still with no impact) wich at last makes it impossible to get any answer on a question wich maybe IS themed on the topic...
But yah, shout at each other also don't helps here... i know some games wich don't have a forum anymore, because the players just complaining off-topic "shit" there (Star Trek Online for example, new posts never get any comment section since a vew years cause the players just complained there about the devs never doing what the players whished)
so please, youre right with the problems and everything, but this is the wrong threat for, if you want some changes...
thats my opinion, if you have another opinion we can discuss about that in a new threat, called "how to use a Forum correctly"

you dont need to read everything, even just reading the first 3 pages is enough to tell you exactly what the rest of the 18 are about

I think the replies are directed not towards artists, but towards the thread OP, who is a game director.

I get where you're coming from. The problem isn't that we can't make a thread to properly complain about AI, micro, crisis or what have you. There are literally hundreds of threads on the forum about this. The problem is that no one at paradox ever bothered to care about any one of them.
A Dev diary is literally the only place left to bring up these issues where you can expect PDX to care about it. And if there isn't any Dev reaction addressing these issues we can expect next Dev diary to turn out no different.

This sucks.

But i bet that the artists who made this will still have a look now and then, how the community is reacting.

The content designers ARE wrong. People who designed megacorp are the ones responsible for the quality of the game. I'm begining to think all the caraveneer memes they put in were a prophecy for the future rather than a joke.

If you're genuinely excited about more window dressing for a terrible game then I don't think it's worth a dialogue. I hear paint dry simulator is coming out on Steam soon after its epic exclusive expires, might be worth a look.

there are 2 whole pages in this 21 page thread about comments that assure the dev that showed up here that they KNOW its not the artists fault
