Stellaris Dev Diary #282 - Announcing First Contact

Hi everyone!

About twenty minutes after we posted Dev Diary 280, the community had largely decoded the message we hid in there... CONTACT IS COMING.

Last week, we had A Message from Minamar Specialized Industries, and it's time to take them up on that offer. (And you deciphered the message in there even more quickly!)

I'm pleased to announce that the First Contact Story Pack will be released alongside the Stellaris 3.7 "Canis Minor" update. Click here to wishlist the Story Pack.

Look to the Stars, For You Are Not Alone

For countless ages, your people have looked to the stars with wonder - is there anybody else out there? When we meet, will they be friends or enemies? Will we be the ones to discover them, or are they already here, hiding in plain sight?

The First Contact Story Pack focuses on the experiences of these Pre-FTL civilizations, both from the point of view of the civilizations themselves as well as from the observers. Observation has been revamped with new enhanced systems relating to civilization Awareness, Diplomacy, and Espionage. New Insights can be learned from observing civilizations that have not been corrupted by the galaxy as a whole.

They've been here before.

The Universe Is Cruel, But Also Awe-Inspiring

Origins

Two Challenging Origins - Payback and Broken Shackles - revolve around the struggles of empires against the oppressive Minamar Specialized Industries, while a third standard Origin - Fear of the Dark - examines the fine line between paranoia and prudence. As befits a Story Pack, all three of First Contact's Origins are heavily narrative focused.

Our benevolent overlord.

Several new low-technology civics can change the way you take your first steps to the stars or how you interact with the pre-FTL civilizations you find.

Civics

One small step...

Nobody saw this coming in a Story Pack, but there's also Cloaking... We'll reveal more about that later.

This Thursday, we'll discuss the vision and themes of First Contact in greater detail.

See you then!

The Treaty of Algeron may be annulled? Impossible! XD
Remember about ammended that allowed usage of cloaking device on NX-74205 USS. Defiant.
Cloaking? It is a good day to die!

I see can you, Kirk. Fallen Empire Fleet. Can you see me? Oh, now be honest, Admiral, warrior to warrior. You do prefer it this way, don't you, as it was meant to be? No peaceful vassal agreements in our time. 'Once more unto the breach, dear friends.'

*******************

I really hope Bulwarks have some kind of defence against cloaked vessels, but yeah, everything else in this DLC looks like pure gravy to me. :)

Does this mean two origins that have you deal with one specific empire with one specific name every time? Rather than something more randomized like Lost Colony?

To be honest, I really hope not. That would get old very fast for me.

It's especially unfortunate if it's the widely requested crashed slave ship and X-Com-like Origins that would now be blocked from having a general role-play value because you wanted to attach a specific story to them.

Could you please make an 'X-com' origin? That is, a pre-FTL species gains FTL tech by fighting off an invasion by an aggressive alien race?

The mention of the homeworld story line for the slave origin is interesting. It would be cool if homeworlds had more of an impact in the game. For example: getting some sort of event/bonus if you liberate a world where the original pops were purged and create a vassal with them as the primary species.

In any case excited to see this one! If payback is an origin where there was a failed invasion that sounds like a great set up for an X-Com/Stellaris mega campaign :p

EDIT: Are there any galactic resolutions that come with this DLC? Seems like resolutions that create galactic reserves would fit right in.
I loved your idea!

Broken shackles is the escaped slaves origin from dev diary #169 !

One of the photos in the DLC site shows what looks like 2 low-tech starships with rotating sections and some sort of colony ship (?) with a shield in the front. Now I ask: is that a new shipset? It is available for players or those ships exclusively belong to a new NPC faction composed by STL (slower than light) nomads?

Drat. I was hoping to get to actually play *as* an FTL civ. Would have been tricky to pull off, but man would it open up a whole new range of opportunities.

First contact is already overly long and over complicated. Keeping ambassadors busy decoding rubbish, when they should be busy making deals and raising the trade value. And the waiting? Putting a bigger bow on it does not improve your wait time.
The good news- it's not "The liberation of Earth", I guess?
The bad news- More fluff, nothing that addresses the slowdowns. Try making a story origin that doesn't have "population decision jamming."
edit- (27 disagrees) I simply prefer a less cluttered range of options and a clearer goal for the game. First contact with the other ai players shouldn't be a "stop everything, deal with one MORE little problem" every time, or adding the same problem to the primitive worlds. To me, it's another announcement where nothing good has been added, while everyone else is acting like it's best thing since Tripods sliced bread. Stellaris has had enough of those added without ever rolling back the choices that caused the late game slowdown.

I am pretty sure that there will be tons of annoying Resultions.
Anyone willing to bet that the Galactic Community will have a resolution that would result in some sort of Prime Directive for the primitives.
Some annoying Xenophiles demanding that no one interferes with the primitives on Empire Expansion Planet 4

Speaking of Pre-FTL - Should there be a Origin where your species is a abandoned uplifted species (start with a pre-sapient trait) - as a reference to Children of Time/Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky? If not, I guess it could be included later as a Custodian patch.
Uuuh I love that idea, even though the novel was somehow weird. Maybe because the protagonists had been spiders.

Payback = XCOM origin?

Broken Shackles = Primitive slave rebellion origin?
Payback = XCom sounds nice. Maybe not exactly XCom more like Terra Invicta.

Broken shackles is shown on the steam page. Apparently the idea behind that is that a ship with slaves from different species crashlanded on a planet. Might be interesting to see how this plays out. Everyone Xenophile or one race stronger than the other so they became the new Masters

Yeah, that stuff should be more random or generic, or the roleplay is harmed.

The antagonist of both Broken Shackes and Payback is called Minamar Specialized Industries -- and unlike you, I see nothing wrong about having a non-random empire as my enemy. By the contrary, I hate the fact I cannot customize the homeworld of my species in Lost Colony, the members of my federation in the Common Ground Origin, my vassals in the Hegemonic Origin, my benefactors in the Scion Origin or my overlord in the Imperial Fiefdom Origin. Why? It's because I want a full customizable galaxy, where I can tell my very own stories.

Civics
What do you mean, low-technology civics? Are unlockable civics (civics you can unlock and reform into but can't select at game start) making a comeback?

Yeah, I feel the same. AI-spawning origins should be adjust led to allow selecting specific empire designs.
