Stellaris Dev Diary #49 - Graphics & Portraits

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris development diary. This development diary will cover improvements made to graphics in the Heinlein update and new species portraits coming in both Heinlein and the Leviathans Story Pack.

Improved Bloom Shader (Free Feature)
One of the features we really wanted to get in for release but never could was the improved bloom shader. Bloom is now days a dirty word, and has a bad reputation from previous generations overuse. But when used correctly it really makes thing look amazing. A game like Stellaris where so many things are glowing, ship windows and engines, stars, laser weapons etc. We had most of the code done before release, but once we switch over, everything in the game which was glowing needed to be tweaked, and in some cases needed code.
During Heinlein we had some time for this and now its all fixed so the star burn bright and the lasers glow.

We also spent a little bit of time improving the planet city textures.

New Portraits
Both before and after the release of Stellaris we've received a lot of different requests for new species portraits. Among the more frequent requests are to make more 'alien' aliens, and this is something we tried to address before release, adding a large number of non-human shaped aliens. Another common request, that I felt we did *not* address, was for more 'cute', 'pretty' and 'humanlike' aliens. Sure, we have your basic humans and there's the ever-lovable space foxes, but we've noticed that quite a few people tend to play *only* as humans or *only* as space foxes, and we wanted to give these people some more options to play with. For this reason we decided to do a new round of portraits, with the work split between 'cuties' and 'humanlike' aliens.

Humanoid Portraits Pack (Free Feature)
Humanlike (or 'rubber forehead' as they're sometimes derisively called) aliens is something we intially avoided putting into Stellaris, focusing on more alien species to give a sense of the galaxy as a diverse place full of different lifeforms. However, I felt that in doing so we overlooked the fact that there is quite a few people who actually want to play as, and encounter, more humanlike aliens, as they are something that we as humans can more easily recognize and relate to than say, a sentient crab. For this reason we decided to create a new species class called 'humanoids' that is essentially mammalians that look more like humans than other mammalians, and made 4 new portraits for this category that will be given to everyone in the free Heinlein update. Humanoids do not have their own city graphics or ships as they are essentially mammalians and mostly only have their own group for interface sorting purposes. When making portraits going into the future, we will continue to focus primarily on 'alien' aliens, and humanlike ones will always be very much in the minority, but they will still be there for those that want them.

Cuties Portraits Pack (Paid Feature)
The cuties, on the other hand, are simply something we very much know that many people (including myself) wanted: More cute species. We decided to focus on adding them to the species classes that didn't already have something cute, and also to species classes that had fewer portraits than the others.

That's all for this week! Next week, Heinlein and the Leviathans Story Pack will be coming out, so we are now officially all tapped out on content to show you for them. However, be sure to watch the release stream and today's Extraterrestial Thursday stream for further previews and sneak peeks. We will also be posting the 16-page patch notes sometime during next week, so keep your eyes peeled for that as well.

Don't forget our Extraterrestrial Thursday Livestream - Today (Thursday) at 15:00CEST on https://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

Are there any plans to make it so that species portraits will no longer be used more than once in a galaxy? I always find it really strange to find two different species living on separate sides of the galaxy who share a portrait. If not, is there any way to mod this?

Wiz said a week ago that this has been fixed in Heinlein.

I do think the ´cute´ aliens approach may have come a little short.
The snail looks cute and all, and the gecko is close enough, although I think its eyes are too big.
The other just don´t really come off as cute. Have you ever looked at a butterfly up close? Absolute terror.

Like many others, I agree that a rabbit or some other mammalian should have been added as a ´cute´ alien, rather than trying to fill up the gaps with mollusks and arthropods.

With my xenophobic purifier humans, it is now my main mission, to enslave the space elves.

You're right actually, the female one does look a lot like Gul Dukat's half-cardassian half-bajoran daughter. And I too, thought 'Cardassian, sortof' when I saw it.

And yeah, I don't like the Space Elves too much, but then, the Vulcans ARE Space Elves, just less Elvey.

The TOS Klingons maybe, not so much the ones in later movies and TNG onwards.

Also, at the person who said that the fourth humanoid portrait looks molluscoid. I agree here, or perhaps amphibianoid. The third set also look vaguely reptillian.

Klingons dont talk about TOS Klingons :D

And Vulcans are as Elvey as an Space Elve can be :D (Arogant superior stance, Advanced Culture/Science, Long Lived, Stronger. Pointy Ears, Psychic Powers (magic) )

I'm not sure y'all really got what people like about the space foxes so much for the cuties, since it's more that they're elegant/pretty than cute. However, you mentioned people want more "'cute', 'pretty' and 'humanlike' aliens" and then went on to say that you've made the cute and humanlike ones, so pretty could be nest on the list? Well, I look forward to it.

I really like the snails though, the grass inflorescence in the mouth was a good touch. Makes them seem laid back and friendly. The humanoids are also a good edition, but four feels like too few. It would be nice to have twice that number, so although this is reasonable for now I hope we see some more in upcoming patches DLC.

Also, I don't mind it either way, but I bet some people would really appreciate being able to weight which categories are more likely to appear, since humanoid aliens are thematically pretty different (realism etc) compared to less humanoid aliens.

Humanoids.......
I know it's a free feature and it's cool but is it a possibility to remove them? Or make them not appear during game?
I really not want them (specially the elves and snow elves ones)

In another hand i really like the graphic effects, specialy the city lights on planets.

With so many complainers here, I am sure there will be a mod to remove any portraits that are undesired soon after launch. Personally, I think the more portraits the better.

I'll avoid most of the cutesy portraits, since that just isn't my flavor. But I'm fine with them existing for others who dig 'em. I like the idea of more humanoid portraits since that is a bit more my flavor.

In general a Checkbox wether you want a Potrait to show up or not in your game would be a neat (paid :p ) feature.

Except portraits, is there a plan to make every race (game) unique?
When I see those pictures, I got image where I play as a "borg" synthetic-race, with no food (building convert it to energy and/or minerals), neutral happines all the time, unique tech tree and options...
Please, give more diversity to game :)
