Each time you complete a Tradition tree, you will unlock one Ascension Perk slot, of which there are 8 in total.
I didn't read the whole thread, so I'm sorry if this was already asked, but won't this encourage players to complete most of the tradition trees, even when they don't at all fit your empire/ethos?

Yeah, of all the things we've seen so far the tradition trees are the only ones I'm not fond of the implementation of.

Doesn't an Ethos lock it out? Anyway, it looks to me like it will be easier to search for those other ways to unlock Ascension Perk slots. Keeping your Empire small and locking yourself from having minority species and slaves as all these increase the costs of unlocking a Tradition, something that I don't think most players will want to do.

Traditions have no lock outs, anyone can get any of them.

Cybernetic ascension ---> ai uprising

Evolution ascension ---> preythorian

Psionics ascension---> unbidden

Paradox unless this is intentional you guys have made a huge opportunity for yourselves!

You're not required to go down any of these paths, nor will every AI-controlled empire do so.

In my opinion should exist a fourth "conservative" option to made the things really interesting, a clear non-ascension path (maybe reversible) Something beetween wanting the things going "natural", fantatics of tradions and luddites.

Great DD! I'm really excited for the next patch and DLC.

They also said you could unlock perk slots through either technology or special events. I imagine the precursor event will unlock a slot.

Will the Ascension Perks involve new mechanics? I hope they add actual new things instead of just additional spreadsheet numbers though. Eating a pop or demanding slaves is great, increasing your border range % not so much. :p

This looks like the feature I liked the most in Civilization Beyond Earth, altough it was more like "cybernetics, biology and purity".
Purity would be nice, since it could be linked to Xenophobia. I can't picture a purely Xenophobic empire (strongly attached to its purity) in any of those 3 categories. Besides, aiming for mass genocide and ethics homogeneity is a fun gameplay.

But of course I guess Civ BE has been an inspiration somehow, and that a Purity Ascension has already been considered by your teams.

The Synthetic Path focuses on the replacement of biology with machinery. The first level allows you to turn your population partly synthetic through the use of cybernetics, while the second level replaces your biological pops with robots, turning your empire entirely synthetic.

Borg

Also about eating pops.

Reavers

Others unlock new features, such as the ability to construct new types of space structures (more on in later dev diaries).

Deathstar

But on a more "serious" note: if you have synthetic path and you continue conquering the galaxy and assimil...I mean adding new worlds to your empire with different pops, is the replacing pops uh...perk/event/technology/what-have-you a one-time thing, or can you add your new citizens' biological and technological distinctiveness to your own?

Also, when it happens the first time does it work on only your starting race or does it also change everyone, including alien races living in your empire, to synths?

From what we've seen, there is A LOT of Ascension Perks (Wis mentioned more than 20).

Path-specific perks sound interesting, but this doesn't mean that they are more powerful in game mechanic terms and you are screwed if you didn't pick one of them.

You could play as "conservative" and pick a number of perks not related to "transhumanism" (or transalienism in our case) like perks for terraforming, building orbital structures, more direct controlled planed, buffs vs Fallen Empires and so on. And your empire will be as powerful as the one who picked one of the paths. If not more, actually (events for internal conflicts like EU westernization?). Just not that interesting.

In this way, any perk which is not connected to one of the paths is "conservative".

Also, can we pleeeeeeeease have new portraits/pop pictures for robot pops to choose from? I would pay money for that, like a species pack

If you respectfully disagree with this post just because of not wanting to pay for it, I will be sad

No, ethics can't lock out Traditions. In fact, picking certain tradition trees opposite to your ethos will cause imternal strife and eventually lead to a change in empire ethos.
