I am looking forward to horrible decision time in 1.5 so, so much :D

The shroud or the inmaterium doesn't exist. The ruinous power are an invention of the enemies of the empire. Any further inquiry on the matter will be treason against the empire of man. The emperor protect!

Why reserve such cool stuff only for the spiritualists?

We want to make the ethics more distinct by giving them more unique mechanics, basically.

Hmm - Have to say I am sort of sad to see psionics tied even harder to spiritualism. There are plenty of psionic tropes that are pretty 'materialist'/(pseudo-)scientific as opposed to spiritual/mystical.

Edit: I understand, and in many ways agree with the design goal in doing this, I am simply a bit sad about narrowing the sci-fi scope in this way.

This is just a matter of taste - I've never been too fond of mystical sci-fi, but have a soft spot for old fashioned science fiction where "unlocking the potential of the mind" was "proper science". :) Mechanically I think the proposed interactions look cool.

I mean, given how this is going, the materialist path.... well, it might well go roughly like this.

"What began as a conflict over the transfer of consciousness from flesh to machines escalated into a war which has decimated a million worlds. The Materialists and the Spiritualists have all but exhausted the resources of a galaxy in their struggle for domination...."

Great stuff! Here's hoping for an accidental creation of a new god, with the price being a single species!

Can other non-psychic empires interact with the psychics in any interesting ways? Like asking for help from the Shroud through them or researching anti-psychics or other neat stuff?

A certain percentage of your leaders will have the 'Psychic' trait that grants a variety of advantages for the different leader classes, you will get access to Psionic Armies and also the special Psi Corps building.

I started watching Babylon 5 because this was a reference to it. First episode I was struck by the aweful acting but then shit gets real half way through.

The Shroud (Paid Feature)
Not long after fully awakening, your species will become aware of The Shroud. The Shroud is the realm from which psychics draw their power, a strange dimension very unlike the material universe, a place of opportunity and danger alike.

So it's the Warp/Immaterium/Chaos Realm in 40k? Good choice.

We will not give them all away here, but some examples include unlocking psionic technologies, asking the spirits that dwell there for a boon, or even forming a Covenant with one of a number of particularly powerful spirits.

Okay so Chaos Gods? This will be my first aim with Ascension perks so I'm excited to find out.

I think it works fine in this setting. Psychic powers seem to come from a conscious source, rather than from a physical process. I'm fine with the idea that the only reason spiritualists get powers is because some currently unfathomable being from an alternate dimension has detected their belief and imparted some abilities.

Spiritualists may argue that psionics defies empiricism and is a reward for the faithful by god/gods/supernature.

Materialists may argue that psionics is just a powerful interdimensional science that cannot be studied yet due to the conscious interference of the xenos.
