Stellaris Dev Diary #63: Synthetic and Biological Ascension

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris dev diary. This week we'll be talking about Ascension again, specifically the Synthetic and Biological Ascension Paths. In dev diary #60 we talked about the Psionic Ascension Path and the associated Shroud. The Shroud was a fairly major mechanical addition to the game, which we felt was needed as Psionics lacked any such mechanic associated with them, unlike the other two. For this reason, the Biological and Synthetic Ascension Paths do not have the same degree of new mechanics associated with them, but rather focus on enhancing the existing mechanics (Genemodding and Robots) that they are tied to.

The Synthetic Ascension Path focuses on abandoning your frail biological forms for that of a perfect machine. The first step, the Flesh is Weak, requires the Droids technology and allows you to modify your entire population through a special project, turning them into cyborgs. This gives them an immediate +20% boost to habitability, as well as bonuses to mineral production and army damage, and also makes any leaders generated from those species have the Cyborg trait granting an additional +40 years of lifespan.

The next step, Synthetic Evolution, requires the ability to build Synths, and allows you to upgrade your cyborg population into fully mechanical forms, finally abandoning the frailty of flesh for the surety of synthetics. When it is complete, you will become a fully robotic empire, with a robotic primary species. Your population will benefit from all the advantages normally conferred to Synths in production and research, and all your leaders will be immortal, able to be killed only in battle or through events. You will also naturally no longer require Food for your synthetic population, instead being replaced by an Energy maintenance similar to regular Synths. You will also be able to name your new, gloriously post-biological people.

The Biological Ascension Path focuses on mastery of DNA and evolution. The first step, Engineered Evolution, requires the Gene Tailoring technology and grants a major reduction to the cost and time required to genetically modify species, gives you +2 trait points, and also unlocks the ability to research the Gene Seed Purification technology which is otherwise unavailable (it can still be researched as normal for those who do not have the Utopia expansion), allowing recruitment of Gene Warriors.

The next step, Evolutionary Mastery requires the Targeted Gene Expressions technology. It grants an additional +3 trait points, a further reduction in time and cost of genemodding, and unlocks the ability to research the Genetic Resequencing technology, which once researched unlocks Advanced Genemodding. With Advanced Genemodding you will be able to add negative traits and remove positive traits, allowing you to completely reshape species at your whim. It also unlocks five new traits that are exclusively available to the Biological Ascension Path:
Robust: Upgrades from Extremely Adaptable, adds +30% habitability and an extra +30 years of lifespan.
Fertile: Upgrades from Rapid Breeders, gives -30% growth time and +5% happiness
Erudite: Upgrades from Intelligent, gives +20% science production and +1 leader skill levels.
Delicious: Makes the species delicious and nutritious, granting +100% food yield from Processing and Livestock.
Nerve Stapled: Removes the ability of the species to feel happiness or sadness. Happiness is disabled and Food/Mineral production increased, but adds major penalties to other resource production.

Additionally, Advanced Genemodding allows for the ability for non-Hive Mind empires to remove the Hive-Minded trait from Pops and for Hive Minds to add it to Pops, as mentioned in dev diary #62.

I just realized something: if the Biological Ascension Path gets Gene Warriors which are the best army in the game and do a whole lot of damage than psionic armies, won't those who take the Biological Ascension Path be overpowered in comparison to the psionic Ascension empire?
Possibly, also anyone who doesn't pay money still has access to gene warriors as normal apparently...

My guess is the army buffs they mention post transition should hopefully be enough to even the playing field at least a bit and lets hope the same is true for the psi warriors after their transcendence. ^_^

But when I think about it, You can mod species A to be super stronk and resilient, then make them gene warriors, yeah nm that'll probably far outclass any other current template... Then again if Genetic has super god tier ground game then that just means that other factions have to adjust their tactics accordingl~ *BOOM*

Or never lose the space war.
 
There are many things in play here. Fully psy-advanced race will not only get psionic armies, but also 100% psionic leaders, who will apparently all have a heavy buff in addition to normal trait.

So your psionic army can have a psionic general. This will level the field somewhat.

Also if I remember correctly, all of the Fallen Empires use Gene Warriors. So what does that mean exactly?

And why lock the Gene Warriors behind one of the Ascension paths? I can understand psionic armies but the mechanical Ascension Path doesn't get an army so I'm not sure what's going on here.

Gene Warriors are also a lot more expensive than any other type of army. Except Titanic Beasts.
 
You can already do this in the game right now. The gene modification techs allow you to add traits to specific species on one or multiple planets. If you specialize each planet to either produce energy, minerals or research it can be relatively easy to add the respective traits thrifty, industrious, intelligent to the right planets.

If you however want to each planet to produce a balance of all resources it becomes really micro management intensive to resettle and move each individual pop.

It doesn't look like they have changed how the species gene modification mechanic works. So I do not see how this will change in Utopia.

The stellaris-dev-diary-57-species-rights which talks about the new species right system adds some interesting possibilities however. Specifically the Caste-System:
  • Caste System: Species with a caste system have a mix of full citizenship and slavery, with pops working in the farms and mines being enslaved and the rest being free to enjoy the fruits of the serfs' labor.
If they added a way specifically modify the traits of those with full citizenship separate from those who are slaves it would make gene modding so much more useful.

Sounds like what you want is Syncretic Evolution, starting with a second slave race.
 
I kind of wish the synthetics path had been explained in more detail, since we don't have anything in game that does that now.

Will these automatically transform the entire population? Just the founding species? Will there be projects to do so? Do they use something like the genetic modification menu? Can I specify by species or planet? Will I be able to modify one pop at a time? If aliens decide to migrate to my planets, will they be automatically assimilated? Does a particular pop always have to go cyborg first or can you jump to full synthetic if it's available? If I go full synthetic, will I be able to side with the robots in the AI revolt crisis?
 
This is a fundamental disagreement, because:
  • There is no terraforming or habitability solution that couldn't be better applied on Earth, but this is something one could still dispute.
  • Quality of life of people who actually live, and ensuring that those who will live have a good life, are qualities far more important to me than how long humanity will survive. If the cost of survival is misery — and it would be, even people who do go to space and love it are rather ecstatic about being finally back from there — then I won't go for it. This is the fundamental disagreement here, I actually think colonisation is wrong.
The cost of colonising other planets would be misery for many, many people, until we somehow got those places to be liveable. Of course with certain technologies it might become their own choice, but right now, the only way you'd get many colonists would be through desperation or disinformation — and neither of those are ethically acceptable means of ensuring consent.

And now, I've been way too serious in this thread, so I'll bail out. Here's a kitten.
Messing with earths climate will not safeguard us from every possible catastrophe the way that settling other planets could.
I fundamentally disagree to your second point life is life, it is pleasure and agony and both needs to exist for it to be life. Avoiding agony is not living. It's merely existing. Humanity needs to survive, because we are as far as we know the best hope for life, we are the carriers and chroniclers of knowledge and understanding we are the universe starting to understand itself.
Life is change, it is an ever growing number of possible futures, it is progress. Life is the spectre of the rising complexity which makes the increasing entropy of the universe anything more than it's slow death and decay.
Change isn't always pretty, it's not always benevolent, sometimes change leads to suffering, quite often in fact, but everything always changes and only by surrendering to that fact can we gain some measure o control over our existence. We can struggle and drown or we can ride the wave.

You choice, I made mine long ago when I dedicated my life to science.

While they have a big advantage on the ground, wars almost never come down to ground combat. They are almost always decided in space, and psychics have an advantage there. They get super-admirals and the psi jump drive.

also would it be possible for pops to refuse becoming mechanical in that ascension?
maybe fana_ spiritualist or dissident pops could reject it and stay the old species??

also does entire population mean entire population, or entire primary species population?
 
the ability for bio-ascendancies to make completely new species from scratch, or change portraits of existing species, as well as names, would have been nice...
 
Imagine if we could drop retrovirus capsules on colonies belonging to other empires, changing the traits of the species that live there (and portrait/name too, if those things are added). The empire you're doing this to would obviously get an event to try and stop (or at least contain) this, and it could be an effect that spreads with the pops (if they migrate so does the virus). You could forcibly change species in other empires to "delicious" before invading, or be a benevolent empire and give everyone else really good traits. Probably would be unbalanced AF, but it's a cool idea I think.

Hehe, troll them with Repugnant and Nomadic. Everyones mad cause their neighbors are repugnant and lots of them scatter in all directions looking for a place. Maybe even throw on rapid breeders so the infected multiply faster. *chuckle*

Also make them Deviants/weak/or decadent and adaptive for maximum troll and spread...

So Repugnant, Deviant (lower happiness/ethics chaos) /decadent (lower resourceS), Extremely adaptive (can move to many more planet types).
OR Repugnant, Decadent, rapid breeder, Nomadic, adaptive (move to one more planet type)
This is assuming you cant just do all negatives~ ala: Weak, Decadent, repugnant, deviant, Nomadic (5 trait cap?)

Or just remove all of their good traits, and replace them with awful ones, and then make their species look horrifying. :p
