Tinto Flavour #21 - 26th of May 2025

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Mondays (some), Tuesdays & Fridays in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at the two most powerful Merchant Republics of Europe, Venice and Genoa!

Let’s start taking a look at Venice:

The Most Serene Republic of Venice is the most important and powerful of the merchant republics in the Mediterranean Sea. It controls important trade ports and islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, which form the Stado do Mar, and many inland territories in the North of Italy, which form the Domini di Terraferma.

Nonetheless, the lagoon city cannot lower its guard, as new threats arise around it. In the East, the once great Byzantine Empire will not easily forget the Fourth Crusade and the Venetian involvement in it. In the West, the Superb Republic of Genoa and the Crown of Aragon are continuing to expand their influence, conquering more territory and dominating trade routes. And at last, the Signoria of Verona have grown to be a noticeable threat to the Domini di Terraferma.

What will the future hold for the Most Serene Republic? Will it fall under the pressure of its enemies, or will it rise to the top and become the indisputable ruler of the Mare Nostrum?

The 3 subjects of Venice are Candia, Ragusa, and Trieste. As usual, take any UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP.

As you may have seen in one of my forum posts or Reddit, Venice is now an island! Here you also have the full extension of its Stado de Mar, with all its subjects (which, at the highest zoom levels, have their name replaced by that of the overlord, as it happens here with Candia).

Venice is a very unique Republic, which starts with some unique reforms and privileges at the start of the game:

Venice Privilege Libro dOro.png

Venice Privilege Libro d'Argento.png

It also hosts some works of art, some of them sacked from Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade:

Here is a selection of the advances available for Venice:

And a few of its flavour events:

Let’s now take a look at Genoa:

The city of Genoa stands out as the most important commercial port in the Western Mediterranean, its Republic having expanded its influence overseas through trade and war.

After defeating the Republic of Pisa, it gained the island of Corsica and established a foothold in Sardinia. However, this might have been a poisonous gift, as it may now face not only the opposition of its inhabitants, but also that of King Pere IV the Ceremonious de Barcelona, self-proclaimed sovereign of both islands.

Another challenge may arise from the east, as a network of possessions has created the conditions for a commercial dominance over the Black Sea, centered around the port of Kaffa; although dangerous neighbors such as Venice, Byzantium, or the Golden Horde might be a threat.

Relying on our numerous Fondaco and wealthy bankers, will Genoa overcome these challenges?

The Genoese ‘mainlad’, plus its Mediterranean possessions.

Genoa also starts with a couple of unique reforms:

Since we’re not able to have two or more rulers for a country in the game, we’re portraying the Genoese Diarchy by having Galeotto Spinola and Raffaello Doria present as characters at start, and the bonuses you see in the reform.

Genoa also starts with some Works of Art:

It also has a quite important unique building:

And here you have some of the unique advances:

Here you have some of the flavour events of Genoa:

Genoa Event Andrea Doria.png

Genoa Reform Great and Minor Councils.png

An old EU4 friend, coming back in a revisited form!

Oh, and last, but not least, and related to the Byzantine content that we’ll take a look at on Friday, both countries have some unique foreign buildings in Constantinople:

Genoa Building Galata.png

… And much more, but that’s all for today! And tomorrow, there will be a Tinto Flavour devoted to Serbia and Georgia!

And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

1. It is a foreign building, that you can only build abroad.

That's stellar but shouldn't it be available to Venice (and possibly Florence) as well. Long after Genoa lost their holdings in Blacksea and Eastern Mediterranean, Venice still had Fondaco present in Constantinople, Levant and Egypt and continued to trade through those well into 17th century.

3. Bank of Saint George is present, yes, but I'd like to rework it slightly, as the way we implemented it is a bit old/odd.

That's lovely, Spain being what it is in the game I think Genoa's involvement in Spanish Empire as both lenders and venture investors ought to be represent. I think Genoa becoming an informal part of Spanish Empire through its lending and ventures into Spanish possessions especially the initial advances (Maybe even Advances?) in Plantations in Canaries and application of that to Hispaniola is really crucial I feel. It would also steer Western Mediterranean gameplay towards colonization in general which would make it different than Venetian focus on Eastern Mediterranean trade.

Will there be minor flavour content for other italian communes, like Mantua and Bologna, or will we have to wait for a future DLC? I'm thinking about small stuff, such as a couple of special advances, iconic buildings and relevant events.
There's some common 'structural' content, like the Signoria Republic, etc.

Love to see the sea colour changes.
I am not so sure about the mixture of 2d and 3d maps like this, though it does highlight the country very nicely.

I dont think a BBC is needed. It can be represented with foreign buildings and foreign factories in Georgia, giving Genoa the ability to produce certain goods and also high trade advantage and capacity to be able to export them. Sadly the game does not represent tariffs which is how you would benefit form this. As the game currently stands, you would not benefit from it other than from an increased tax based based on thier production but you would not benefit anything from the trade sadly. Maybe give Georgia local increased tax efficiency in those places where they have the trade? Maybe a flat monthly income to represent the tariffs on those trades? I wonder if you can mod in sound talls to represent tariffs. Then a % of each trade would go directly to your treasury representing tariffs. Then both would mutually benefit from it.
Thank you for the introspection.

I don't know either, I just provide the developers with the information and the sourcing. They can take it from there.

Hello Pavia, does the Monaco event implies it can exist as an extraterritorial country? If yes, can we play as Monaco?
Not yet, but it may be something that we may potentially take a look at doing in the future.

Does Venice get a foreign building like the Fondaco to propagate trade power without conquest? I am getting the impression that Venice will play more like a regular country with boosted trade while Genoa will play tall much more effectively.

Just gonna say that the 2D map looks a bit too dark and dreary, especially compared to the colorful and lively event artwork. I suggest upping the brightness and contrast up a bit to the tag colors, plus add some borders to the coastlines to add some additional differentiation between the water and land :)

Wait, how does Galata/Venetia Quarter function? It says that they benefit the location, meaning- I assume- Constantinople. So they're a buff to the city? In real life Venice and Genoa influences were heavily detrimental to ERE's trade, they've basically siphoned it. So it should grant debuffs to ERE, buffs to Genoa/Venice and have some restrictions at removing those building (triggering an event that may lead to war/renewed negotiations?).

Great you have already called the burghers Cittadini! Clergy in Italian is Clero and the Commoner estate should be called Popolo, these can be pretty much applied for every other Italian republic, while for monarchies(and theocracies too) the Nobility should be just called Nobiltà and the Burghers Borghesia/Borghesi.
Beside that the only other improvement would be to rename the estates based on the local dialect

With the rock of Monaco being it's own building, will we get other rocks to represent similar harbours, Such as the rock of Gibraltar?
We had enough room to make Gibraltar its own location with a proper size, and it has a super good natural harbor that helps developing port structures:

I would strongly prefer that the world map not be ghosted on the terra incognita background. Like this, it is more terra partim cognita. Make it properly unknown again :)

THERE BE DRAGONS

(Or at least there should be, as well as other mythical creatures, on the terra incognita background. I believe there's some sea monster there, I'd like some on land as well.)

That's another thing, the tiers we see here are the starting tiers the countries have, Genoa is a duchy(tier 2) and Venice a County(tier 1), Venice was ruled by a Doge(duke in Venetian) so I feel like it should be a tier 2 at game start
That has already been fixed.

It has probably been mentioned a thousand times already, but Venice should not own Slano/Ston (the location just north of Ragusa). That entire location (bar the island of Korčula) was firmly under Ragusa at this time

Have we seen the Administrative Efficiency modifier before? What does it do?

What looks to be the Fog of War with the combination of geographic map and paper map looks super nice!
