Tinto Flavour #31 - 11th of July 2025 - Aztecs

Hello, and welcome one more Friday to Tinto Flavour, the happy days in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!

Today, we will take a look at the flavour content for the Aztecs! Let’s start without further ado:

For the past two centuries, groups of Nahua people descended from the Chichimec migrated to central Mexico from their legendary ancestral home, known as Aztlan. Our people were one of those wandering groups.

As with many other Nahua nations, we settled our own Altepetl. It was named Tenōchtitlan, and we built it over an artificial island in the heart of Lake Texcoco. Our most prominent figures were also influenced by the Toltec culture, and we started to develop a refined civilization in the lagoon. We would also come to be recognized as prime fighters by our neighbors, as our equally refined warring skills make Aztec armies a force to be feared...

However, we currently stand as vassals of the Altepetl of Tepanecapan, our expansion possibilities are limited to the proximities of the lagoon we inhabit. Only an intelligent leader can lead us in our journey to subdue the valley of Mexico and beyond.

As usual, please consider all UI, 2D and 3D Art as WIP.

Before we start, you may notice that we have reconfigured the Country Selection Panel a bit, and that we now have a new tab called ‘Content’, where we’re grouping the unique features and content available to each country:

Tenochtitlan.png

Please take into consideration that the first screenshot is the most zoomed-in map that we’ve ever shared with you, in a very difficult area from a geographical point of view. Therefore, please consider it as the usual WIP stuff, as it’s already on our radar to make some improvements here and there to make it look better.

Mexico may prove to be a very difficult area to expand in…

The Nahua countries start with a unique government reform, the Altepetl, that nudges towards expanding through subjects, and also slave-raiding (which is also linked to the Nahua Ritualism mechanic of sacrificing slaves, as we saw last Wednesday):

There are also a couple of Privileges available to countries that practice Nahua Ritualism:
Privileges Warrior Tribunal.png

Privilege Tax Exemptions.png

And also attached to Nahua Ritualism, a unique building that unlocks two unique units, the infamous Jaguar and Eagle Warriors:

And a unique Sumptuary Law, with two available policies:

And a unique policy for the Administrative System:

Here you have some of the unique Advances of the Aztecs:

Advance Chinampas.png

Although most of the content related to the Aztecs is very attached to the Nahua Ritualism features, and thus, is very mechanical, there are still some non-generic, non-religious related DHEs available for them:

And well, a final boss to deal with:

… And much more, but that’s all for today! Next week we’ll have a Tinto Maps Feedback on Monday, a Tinto Talks on Wednesday, and Tinto Flavour on Friday:
  • Tinto Maps Feedback for Indonesia
  • Wednesday -> Tinto Talks about Inti & Folk Religions
  • Friday -> Tinto Flavour about the Inca
And also remember, you can wishlist Europa Universalis V now! Cheers!

They're just too tiny, unfortunately. We'd have to wait for EU6, with a map 10 times more detailed, to be able to do it, I'm sorry to say.

Is there no way to do some shenanigans with the lake? Like, keep the island as the "center" of the location and do not show any other buildings until the lake can be drained, but leave the soon-to-be-drained part of the lake already as part of the location. As far as I know the lake is "useless" for gameplay anyway.

In lieu of count/county, some ideas of other possible names:
  • County - Āltepētl (tied to the Government Reform probably)
    • Ruled by a Tlahtoāni/Cihuātlahtoāni
  • Duchy - Tlahtohcāyōtl ("realm, kingdom"
    • Ruled by a Tlahtoāni/Cihuātlahtoāni
  • Kingdom - Huēyi Tlahtohcāyōtl ("Great realm, kingdom", sometimes used to refer to the Aztec Empire)
    • Ruled by a Huēyi Tlahtoāni/Huēyi Cihuātlahtoāni
    • ("Great king/ruler)
  • Empire - [same as Kingdom]
It sort of depends on where the historical Aztec Empire lands on the tiers - the above assumes it would be Kingdom tier. If it's Empire Tier, I'd just shift Duchy and Kingdom down a step and make Duchy the same as County. (also not sure how the ranks will interact with the fact that Altepetls can't take land directly)

Bonus:
  • Could use Pilli/Cihuāpilli "nobleman/noblewoman" as a title for noble characters
  • Could use Cuāuhtlahtoāni/(Cuāuhcihuātlahtoāni? not 100% sure which prefix comes first) for vassal rulers of the Aztecs/Nahua

Cihuacóatl should be spelled Cihuācōātl for consistency with the practice of writing long vowels.

Besides, acutes in Classical Nahuatl are only used in the vocative, since that's the only instance in which stress falls on the last syllable. Otherwise, it's always on the penultimate. Acutes are only used to write Nahuatl words in Spanish due to the spelling rules of Spanish.

Are Major Reforms impossible to remove or does Atlepetl have special requirements to remove it? Because otherwise getting rid of it day 1 to expand normally seems a no-brainer move.

So this basically means that most of the Nahua flavour is exclusive to the Altepetl of Tenōchtitlan? Can no other Nahua city do what Tenōchtitlan did and form the "Aztec Empire"?

How do you plan to do the Aztec Empire/Triple Alliance? Would the IO be the "alliance" itself (however, that would only be between two cities, as the third constituent doesn't have a location on map), or the Triple Alliance would be a proper country/tag, and the IO would be about its complex system of vassals and tributaries?

Does the position of the Cihuācōātl actually appear in the game as the position of the Head of Cabinet, like the Mahapatih does for Majapahit?

Amazing, much much better!

On the name Mixcoatl - it appears to me, based purely on Wikipedia, that the Nahuatl form would be Mixcōhuātl, but at the same time Mixcōātl seems also correct, so I wonder if someone could enlighten me if any form could be considered more correct than the other, because I'm a bit confused
Both cōhuātl and cōātl are correct. They are the same word, meaning snake (or twin! hence Quetzalcohuatl is also sometimes translated as 'Precious Twin' etc.). Pronounced 'kowatl' in most variants of Nahuatl, including Classical.

I hope that possiblity for Aztecs to rise and reverse colonise the Europe is possible. Let Sunset Invasion to live as an achievement. Smth like "Defeat colonizers on your home turf, then conquer Spain"

Will the aztecs or anyone for that matter who controls tichnotchlylan (sorry for butchering the cities name) have special mechanics surrounding it its a quite unique city, built eight inside the lake and all that, like getting a huge defensive bonus or something like that.

Something is off about the map imo. It's like someone put tinted glass in different colours over it. Like it's too neon.

I get the feeling I'm playing a modern geopolitics game, not a game in the early modern era.

Country borders are too shiny and when you have a lot of small countries it does indeed create the effect of a stained glass window.
If you just changed the borders a bit it should be fine.

Please note that this is an advance for Age of Absolutism, long after the Aztec Empire was conquered; this is the only instance in which we allow for some alt-historical, more pop-history oriented content, as I've already said in previous Tinto Flavour posts.
Then shouldn't the content relate to the ending of the 5th Sun or something similar?

What purpose does spreading a long-discredited myth serve? Especially one so unrelated to the state/culture in question?

In the warrior societies advance you mention that any warrior in the Aztec society who showed exeptional millitary skill/captured enemies in battle could move up the social ladder and become a noble. With this being true, I feel as though there should be a bonus to promotion speed in this advance and/ or the buildings it gives you.

Folk religions? For some specific region? What could it be?

I think more like generic folk religion mechanics that will be for most pagan beliefs which dont have unique mechanics themselves

They already mentioned about dynamic naming for Gods so I guess the folk religions will have common mechanics that you will choose and celebrate many gods and the ones available will change depending on which pagan belief you have
