Tinto Flavour #8 - 28th of February 2025 - Morocco

Hello, and welcome one more week to Tinto Flavour, the happy Fridays where we take a look at the flavourish content of the super-secret Project Caesar!

Today we will take a look at the Sultanate of Morocco! So let’s start without further ado:

"The Maghreb has seen many dynasties pass by and one powerful Sultanate after another, such as those of the Idrisids, the Almoravids, or the Almohads. The years of instability and uncertainty are a thing of the past under the Marinid dynasty and Sultan Abu Al-Hasan 'Ali ibn 'Othman Marinid. With a delicate balance between brute force and diplomacy, we have managed to establish firm control within our borders. Now, we look to the east to challenge the power of the Zayyanid of Tlemcen. And, to the north, we have a foothold over the Strait of Gibraltar, in the lands from Algeciras to Ronda, from where we may support our brothers of faith in Granada, in a common effort against the Christian rulers of Iberia."

Please take the UI, 2D and 3D art as WIP, as usual.

Here are the lands of Morocco:

You may notice some arrows in a sea zone, that indicates the oceanic currents and wind directions. These visuals were recently implemented, so take them as WIP.

Morocco starts with a fairly interesting diplomatic situation:
Diplomacy1.png

Diplomacy2.png

Tafilalt is a vassal subject, ruled by Omar Abu ‘Ali, brother of the Sultan. Castile and Tlemcen and enemies and rivals, Tunis is an ally, and Morocco starts at war with Tlemcen.

Morocco has a few starting estate privileges, including these:
Waqf Payments.png

Waqf Payments is a privilege granted to the clergy, available to all Muslim countries.

Tribal Strongholds.png

This privilege will be granted to the Tribes if your country has its capital in the Maghreb region, making it much more powerful (which has its uses), but reducing your control.

The Parliament has a flavour name, as usual:
Mejlis.png

Morocco also has some starting works of art:

Unique advances in all the different ages:

This is an advance for Maghrebi countries.

And something a bit different compared to previous Tinto Flavour, unique buildings that are already unlocked at the start of the game:

Let’s move now to the narrative content. This event will trigger early on in the game:

And also:

Another early game event is:

And a bit later, after 1350:

Although there might also be some troubles:

… And much more content, including mid-game one regarding the golden age of the Saadi dynasty… But that’s all for today! Next week we will be taking a look at the content for one my favourite countries to playtest, Hungary! Cheers!

Will the migrations of different Arab tribes into the Maghreb (such as the migration of the banu Hilal) be represented, and if so how. The migrations of Arab tribes into the maghreb played a significant role in the political history of North Africa especially, in this time period. Will they represented by SoPs?

this question is probably a bit too late, but i just wanted to ask here. As a muslim state, can you PU a christian state, or possibly have a ruler that is not of the same faith as the nation? like for example, The ottomans PU'ing Hungary, or the ottomans placing a ruler from their dynasty on the hungarian throne. And vice versa as well.

Or maybe just call "Morocco" and "Tunis" something else. "Morocco" feels weird (and anachronistic) for that time. Merinid Sultanate is good, or even Merinid Sultanate of Fez. Zianid Sultanate or even Zianid Sultanate of Tlemsen is good too. What do you think about this ?
That would definitely be a much better choice than "Morocco"

No Kasbah's?

Personally I don't know enough about Morrocco to know what the difference between a Kasbah and other kinds of castles, but I feel it should get referenced in some way.

One of the challenges for Morocco is reining in the tribesmen, yes.
Could there be options for going back to monkey and just letting the tribes take over and do whatever they want?

It should probably result in a ton of decentralization buffs, but it could make for an interesting alt-hist run with maybe the tribes forming a different nation.

These TTs are a lot more early-game oriented than I was expecting. I understand not wanting to show everything off but it might be more varied and interesting if the flavor shown was from a wider date range

Thats a lot of effort for a nation destined to dissappear. Deus Vult.

On a serious note. Will you be able to turn Morocco from arab or arabised to berber? I think Christianity, Judaism and berber paganism where mostly gone by the start date, but if pops are like in victoria 3 maybe Morocco wouldn’t be fully islamic? Even Israel has about a million jewish berbers

True but they do it for spoiler reasons I guess, so that you can be pleasantly surprised by a certain situation or chain of events (for instance they talked here about the Saadi golden age)

Hi Pavia and all.

I know you say to consider everything as WIP but I would like to point out something when choosing artistic art. It's just a personal observation, not to consider a collective opinion on behalf of other players.

The characters that appear, especially the European ones, look very "cartoon" or "doll-like".
I would like to ask if the art team couldn't provide an environment (for the entire game) with a more serious, dark and realistic tone. English is not my native language, I don't know how to express it better. I want to feel immersed in a world of war and chaos but also of honor, tradition and hope. About the characters, feel the characters genuinely human, with their unique characteristics and flaws, be it cruelty or courage, etc, but also designed almost to photorealistic.

And I would like all this to see reflected in the game. If the choice of artwork is what we see, something very light and smooth, you might want to know what the players think (not that it's mandatory, but are small details that can make the game a big success).

What you think?

Thank you.

You should change the symbol for "being rivaled by/with". It looks similar to "being at war with", the red one? Two crossed swords, am I right? Make it a lightning or sth. else.

Strong agree. Can't help but worry a bit about it and how effective the flavor delivery will be. I would hope for a few bits interspersed throughout time rather than the early game frontload with just a promise that there'll still be stuff later.

Would you consider using the romanized/transliterated versions of the Arabic names for certain countries?

Touat = Tuwat/Tuat
Touggourt = Tuggurt
Ouargla = Wargla
Djerid = Jarid

The current names are the French variations of the names while Morocco isn't "Maroc".

Also "Touat" has an unfortunate pronunciation and the others have somewhat unclear pronunciation for non-French speakers, like "Djerid" or "Ouargla". It's not always intuitive to English speakers that the French "ou" makes a "w" sound.
To be fair, Maroc is a totally different name from the Arabic name (Al-Maghrib). The spellings you suggested are the same names, just adjusted to English spelling conventions. The spellings that are in now are also transliterations of the Arabic names, just according to French conventions instead.

I'm not really opposed to it, but we should also take into account that the French spellings are the official name of these places today, so using them makes them much easier to look up on a map or on Google. But of course historically speaking they wouldn't be common until the 1800s.

Jaysh armies is a weird thing to say. Maybe it means something different in the Moroccan dialect, but as far as I know jaysh means armies so the tech is "armies armies".

Didn't check the previous pages if someone mentioned this yet.
I'm fairly sure it also just means army in Darija. I believe the advance is reffering to this. I'd suggest renaming it to "Jaysh tribes"

then again, we also call it the "Sahara Desert"....

eh the Arab migrations were mostly completed by this point. Instead of more migrations, I think we should see population growth of Arab tribes and assimilation of some Amazigh into Arab cultures - mainly in urban areas and more fertile and flat lands
