Tinto Talks #13 - 22nd of May 2024

Welcome to another Tinto Talks, where we give out top-secret information about our upcoming unannounced game with the code name Project Caesar. This time we will touch a little bit on the aspect of religion in this game.

Every country, pop, or character has a religion they adhere to. This impacts their relationship with the place they currently are, and their relationship with others in the world.

This is the religious setup of Aragon in 1337.

Every religion in Project Caesar belongs to a Religion Group, such as Christianity or Paganism. Fellow religions in the same group consider each other to be merely Heretic, whereas religions in different groups condemn each other as Heathen.

Every religion has a specific view of other religions as well, that ranges from Kindred to Enemy, which impacts relations between countries of different faiths, and how populations of another faith view your country.

Each country also has their own tolerance of their true faith, of heretics, and of heathens, which impacts how happy or angry the population will be depending on which country they belong to.

The Same Religion here, is from the law relating to valid heirs.

The religious unity of your country has a really large impact on the satisfaction of your Clergy Estate.

Important to know is that in Project Caesar, you just do not send missionaries to your locations and eventually they have changed religion. Here conversion is a slower process, which relies on government activities and infrastructure.

A unique building for Muslim countries that has a tiny impact on conversion.

Each religion belongs to a group, which impacts which tolerance is applied and how religions interact with each other. Religions in the same group are viewed as heretics, but those of another group as heathens.

The groups we currently have are, but that may change as we continue to develop the game.
  • Christian
  • Muslim
  • Eastern
  • Dharmic
  • Zoroastrian
  • Manichean
  • Judean
  • Andean
  • Pagan

The current Christian religions. Take into account that they are very much WIP!

In some games we have made there have not been any major differences between religions, merely being different modifiers, and while some religions in Project Caesar are still only a few modifiers, many will have mechanics. Right now, we have made unique mechanics for Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Miaphysitism, the various Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Shinto, Nahuatl, Hinduism & the Inti religion. Each of these will get their own unique later development diary.

Now every religion will still have some modifiers that describe them, in many cases it is things that enable or disable certain mechanics. Some examples include the fact that countries with Jain as their state religion can not start wars without a casus belli, and that Calvinist countries will never reroll the dice in a battle, as everything is preordained.

Stay tuned for next week, where we talk about another completely new feature that adds flavor to the game.

Sadly, I can’t reply today, as I am at some management thingie in Stockholm, but @Pavía will help you out!

That is the plan, as you may notice that not all 'Pagan' religions are considered Animism. But this is very, very, very WIP at this moment, please take into account.

That's great to hear, and again, very nice work on all this. I wasn't able to discern if it was something very flexible or you guys had determined having a set design to have animism. Victoria 3, for example, seems to have chosen to have animism due to the lack of impact representing further faiths would have on the game and the performance demands that would arise from too many different religions.

Out of curiosity, would you be able/willing to share what religions are in North America that don't have labels?

1. Yes.
2. That's the plan.
3. No, it's set.
Regarding 3) here (on being able to change the relationship between religions over the course of the game), then please include mod support to have it changed through events and the like.

Hey and thank you for new wonderful map Johan.

I have a question. Do Slavic religion exists at this moment in the game?
If not then I would really appreciate if you would add this because Slavic Paganism was still in practise in small communities till the 15th century, according to historian and archaeologist Włodzimierz Szafrański in his book Religia Słowian. W: Zarys dziejów religii.
Could you please include it as at least very small minority? Slavic pagan traditions themselves continues to be commonly practised till 19th century.
I think it would bring more immersion to the game and maybe more alternative history ideas for playthroughs :)

I'll refrain from complaining TOO much for now since WIP and all that, but I'll just add my voice to the choir saying there needs to be better representation of certain religions.

Strange that Strigolniki and Krstjani are in but Armenian church isn't
(pointed out to me that it might be distinctive with the autocephalous mechanic). Strange that North America is very colorful while South America seems barren. Hopefully that isn't the case for long, and isn't a trend for other facets of the game, since in EU4 South America always got the shortest end of the stick.

Overall I hope the population system we finally have is used to the fullest to represent a lot more variety by the time the game is ready.

Edit: Seeing a couple more responses by Pavía confirming it's VERY WIP made me at ease, don't take my words too harshly. Do your best.

I am wondering which group the various factions of the Confucian faith(Seonglihak, Yangmyeonghak, etc. seems like I cannot write chinese characters)belong to. What is the criterion for determining what counts as a religion or not?

Does the main Culture of your country (or maybe even the location) affect the tolerance towards over religion ?

-For exemple i don't think any Spanish culture will be kind towards muslim but maybe other tolerant culture in the world would be more kind to other reliogions, like "melting pot" country in the game maybe Byzantine Empire or Mughals...

I get this is all super WIP, so I imagine there's probably not much implemented yet, but any hint on plans for Romuvan mechanics? Being the last pagan European kingdom under threat from all sides by Christianity is going to make Lithuania the obvious challenge start in PC.

After seeing how detailed religious divisions in CK3 are I am bit disappointed that "Animist" is one giant world-spanning religion that is present on most continents. Hinduism being one single religion and Islam being the simple three isms is a bit more palatable but still wondering the justification for these decisions. Given that "Sami Shamanism" is its own religion I don't see why animism and Hinduism aren't broken up.
We've started working on 'organized religions', as 'Animist' is a very wide label that will require some time to flesh out.

Regarding Hinduism, it will have different ways of being played, as it's very internally diverse...

I have a question about religion. In 1596 in the city of Brasta the union between Orthodox and Catholic churches was declared, so came the unites church. Also, during the Middle and New ages the idea of unity between churches was very somewhat popular. Nowadays there is still some people who practice that form of rites, especially in Western Ukraine. So, will this feature be implimented or shown in one way or another?

Unrelated, however. I have noticed near the the Baltic sea, Romuva, is still in Prussia and Curonia. So, Oldprussians are still represented as seperate, baltic-tongue speaking group?

P.S. I can provide sources
More information about this in a Tinto Maps soon.

Ruism (Confucianism) is not a religion, but you can practice it Religiously or incorporate Religion into your practice if you want.

Source: I am a Ruist.
