Welcome to another Tinto Talks, where we give out top-secret information about our upcoming unannounced game with the code name Project Caesar. This time we will touch a little bit on the aspect of religion in this game.

Every country, pop, or character has a religion they adhere to. This impacts their relationship with the place they currently are, and their relationship with others in the world.

This is the religious setup of Aragon in 1337.

Every religion in Project Caesar belongs to a Religion Group, such as Christianity or Paganism. Fellow religions in the same group consider each other to be merely Heretic, whereas religions in different groups condemn each other as Heathen.

Every religion has a specific view of other religions as well, that ranges from Kindred to Enemy, which impacts relations between countries of different faiths, and how populations of another faith view your country.

Each country also has their own tolerance of their true faith, of heretics, and of heathens, which impacts how happy or angry the population will be depending on which country they belong to.

The Same Religion here, is from the law relating to valid heirs.

The religious unity of your country has a really large impact on the satisfaction of your Clergy Estate.

Important to know is that in Project Caesar, you just do not send missionaries to your locations and eventually they have changed religion. Here conversion is a slower process, which relies on government activities and infrastructure.

Each religion belongs to a group, which impacts which tolerance is applied and how religions interact with each other. Religions in the same group are viewed as heretics, but those of another group as heathens.

The current Christian religions. Take into account that they are very much WIP!

In some games we have made there have not been any major differences between religions, merely being different modifiers, and while some religions in Project Caesar are still only a few modifiers, many will have mechanics. Right now, we have made unique mechanics for Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Miaphysitism, the various Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists, Shinto, Nahuatl, Hinduism & the Inti religion. Each of these will get their own unique later development diary.

Now every religion will still have some modifiers that describe them, in many cases it is things that enable or disable certain mechanics. Some examples include the fact that countries with Jain as their state religion can not start wars without a casus belli, and that Calvinist countries will never reroll the dice in a battle, as everything is preordained.

Will more reformed faiths be represented than the mentioned? For instance anabaptism was extremely widespread at one point at could just as easily have become a lasting reformed faith
 
I've noticed a lot of people bashing animist in the comments lol, I also noticed but I could be mistaken that it looks like the cult of Inti is a small spec in the Cusco area and doesn't span all of what would become the Incan empire, if I might be able to make a suggestion maybe a mechanic for animism could be that if you are able to centralized your tribe into a city state or kingdom either through legitimacy, development or some other mechanic you can create your own cult based around the culture you're playing? maybe if you manage to consolidate the Zulu in some form early you can form a cult of Unkulunkulu (not sure how accurate that name is apologies, feel free to correct me)
 
Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism, as Buddhism is considered 'Eastern', correct. We don't like much that 'Heathen' division between Hinduism and Buddhism either, so we're looking for a better solution, although it's complicated.
It's probably mechanically too difficult, but having Buddhism count as both Eastern and Dharmic would work relatively well.

Animist Africa is terrible. At least copy what CK3 did.

Two west African kingdoms would see each other as rivals alone with different faiths, but the Oyo and Kongo for example would see each other as differently as they saw some Europeans.

I know you mentioned you might work on it, but it would be nice to see "animism" better represented. Things like fetishism, vodun and akom are among the various religions in west africa alone. Much love!
 
I want to know why Flemish and Dutch cultures have been removed by the game. I get that Flemish and Dutch weren't properly defined at that time, but they did develop later on. I hope there will be events that make these cultures appear. IF this were the case then that would also make me worried, because cultures appearing and disappearing like in CK3 for example can ge messy with the AI, unless you find a new way of course. I really hope this can get some clarity...
 
Fair play. But were they populated back then (19th century or whenever EU5 ends) I wonder. Whatever the correct answer is, it's another good argument for dynamic provinces.
I think the wasteland mostly overlaps with the MInas Gerais region which had a gold rush during the colonial era and played an important part in Brazilian colonization.

I think Estonian paganism should be added.

There were certainly still Estonian pagans about at the start date though I think they were pretty much wiped out after the Saint George's night uprising.
 
I think Animism needa to be split up more, such as readding Fetishism. It's a very broad label for a very large group of local religions and beliefs.

Maybe adding Waldensianism would be neat too?

Also, how will EU5 acoid falling into the trap of CK3, where most regions will religiously homogenize within 100 years of game start?

Also, will the Jains be added? I was really disappointed when they were only an estate in an EU4 DLC.

Is there a way to go beyond kindred? Given the attempts at reunion between the Catholics and Orthodox in this period will there be any way to try and reunify them?

Are there any plans to add the Waldensians? Given that Hussites and Lollards are already present, I think the Waldensians would be another neat proto-Protestant group to represent.

Animism is definitely a placeholder, considering there are religions for Sami Shamanism and North American peoples but not the entirety of Africa and Asia.

Honestly, it's China that irks me the most. China has its own religious system that can't be simplified by slapping Mahayana on top of it, especially as Buddhism was usually a minority. Even Confucianism from EU4 was a better system, if we assume that Confucianism was meant to represent the complex system of Chinese morality that obviously isn't just Confucianism but also folk religion, Taoism, syncretized Buddhism and so on.
