Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #85 - Voice of the People Art Content

Overview
Hello! With the 1.3 update and the Voice of the People pack we’re adding a bunch of new visual features and components. While adding new agitator characters across the world, a lot of care and attention has been put into making France its very own visual culture.

1.3 Update
For the free 1.3 update and the agitator feature you’ll be able to see some brand new character outfits for the generated agitators across the world, setting them apart from the standard politicians and giving them a bit more of a rebellious eccentric look, this is further emphasized by the new character background for agitators. In addition, there’s also new effects for the revolution map markers that give them a more eye-catching fiery appearance, and speaking of fiery, another visual update coming with this patch are reworked battle effects for almost all units. Lastly we’ve also added an actual mesh for the aerial reconnaissance PM so that you now actually see planes circling the battlefield.

Historical Agitators
In the forefront of the Voice of the People pack stand some of the eras’ most iconic agitators and revolutionaries ranging from Lenin to Emperor Norton and many others. Most of these unique historical figures sport new visual assets tailor made for them specifically. The ability to read up on their actual history is also now available through the Wikipedia links in their Character Detail screens.

The fancier you dress, the more people will listen to you, right?

Revolution Effects
Expanding on the generic revolution effects we’ve created an assortment of unique VFX that adds a new visual flare for each individual Interest Group when they are revolting, this is accompanied by banners appearing on all the residential buildings in the corresponding flag. These effects will show who among the revolutionary IG’s has the most traction in a state and highlight that with the corresponding effect!

Spawning in every hub affected is the most prominent revolting IG effect.

French Visual Culture
At the heart of the visual content for Voice of the People we’ve focused on making France and its aesthetic pronounced in all aspects of the game with various new assets!

Buildings
The beauty and culture of France will now be present on the worldmap through a completely new set of all the games’ buildings. Everything from the lowest of residential buildings to the biggest factories now have more unique depictions and visual flavor to them, check out the lavender fields on farms for instance! Using historical references ranging from common architectural language to a bit more specific and eccentric the French buildings bring a new level of class to the world.

French towns now contain a huge variety of buildings and details.

UI Skin
Not only will the French aesthetics be prevalent on the map but also in all aspects of the interface! Inspired by Art Nouveau and ornate details from French patterns we’ve created a complete new look for the UI. This new look covers all existing areas of the game, giving not just a fre(n)sh coat of paint but also a lot of new intricate details for frames, patterns and more.

Blue is a soothing color, perfect for keeping cool when dealing with revolution!

Icons will remain recognizable!

France being #2 in the ranking, only appropriate there’s a lot of silver in its UI.

Paper Map
Even when getting an overview of the world through the paper map the French theme and revolutionary history will make its presence known through a completely remade texture for it. Featuring various new patterns and illustrations depicting monumental parts of French history tied to revolutions. In addition we’re also adding illustrations of large mountain ranges and rivers to the land masses to further embellish the feel of the paper map!

In this paper map we’ve drawn out things like mountain ranges and large forest areas!

A very intricate pattern glues together the many illustrations in the new map.

A lot of the new illustrations depict events from revolutions…with some easter eggs in there.

Map Table
Around the paper map we’ve also created a new look for the surrounding table, much in-line with the look of the interface. We also have created new thematic assets for the table, these assets also carry the spark of revolution ranging from a home-made bomb to very classy French grapes. The last piece of new things added to the table is a piece of cloth that will serve as the place for coin emblems, representing the packs you currently own, so it’s a coin collection waiting to grow!

New assets and the beginning of a coin collection!

Lots of your agitators may have some sour grapes…

Illustrations
The last but not least visual component added to Voice of the People are a wide range of new illustrations for the new events that focus on political clashes, schemes and law. The final but most prominent component of all illustrations is a new main menu screen featuring agitators from the pack and architecture from the new French buildings.

A coup d’état is a risky affair.

That gives you an insight into what new visual content we’ll be rolling out with 1.3 and the Voice of the People pack, hope these updates further your immersion through the new agitators, playing as France or with a new looking interface!

Next week we will have the changelog for 1.3 and Voice of the People!

Am I the only one who thinks that Hugo looks like Willy Wonka?

The name of use of Louis-Auguste Blanqui was Auguste, so, if only one of his surnames is kept, it should be his second one: Auguste Blanqui.

If you don't introduce some new game systems that give us a reason to pay attention to where things are, all of this lovely art seems like wasted effort.
With all due respect, just because you seem to overlook the beauty of it doesn't mean that everyone shares the same view. I for example love to randomly zoom in and see the development. It's entirely about how we all play the game, and that player spectrum is very wide - yet I can guarantee you that majority of us will love it. :)

This diary, once more, proves that whole idead that "3d models is better than 2d" for Victoria 3 is garbage.
Victorian style portraits alone would make game so much more beautiful and athmospheric. And what we got were hideous models on a level of TES: Oblivion randomized character creators.

I would love to get this DLC, but I’d much prefer to be able to upgrade to the Grand Edition and get the American Buildings Pack etc. that way. Will you ever offer an option to do so?

Can we get help from agitators when we need some help with starting our little brothers' (Minorities) independence war? If not, can we do it soon?
Hello! Dan answered part of this in the Agitators diary:

"In 1.3 Agitators will join Political Movements that can boil over into Revolutions. In the future (no promises as to exactly when), we would like to overhaul our Nationalism/Secession systems and also give Agitators a role in national liberation movements. For this reason many significant and interesting figures that might have been solid Agitator candidates like Gandhi or Cao Futian haven’t been included in 1.3, as we feel we can do them more justice at a later time."

While I think one of the best parts of this game are the graphics, the battle effects need to be redone by someone who isn’t into 1914 steampunk. Most of this game takes place in the 19th century, and therefore it should act accordingly.

I want soldiers on the map. Now. Still not a fan of two camps shooting at each other. That does not represent a battle. Maybe add 2-3 tiny lines of tiny men shooting each other instead. That would be cooler. Maybe the trenches graphics do but I would love to see a British model with a brodie helmet instead going at it.

My dudes, who cares for the french
Given how strong they are ingame...shouldn't the question rather be: For whom do the French care...next? ;)
