I would love it if the game could:

  • Correctly quarter the coat of arms of a dynasty when new titles are added or titles or claims are lost.
  • Also/Alternatively let the player design the coat of arms using titles held and, maybe, formerly held but claimed.

This could mean a lot of coding for a, seemingly, minor improvement, but I think it would add greatly to in-game role-playing. And it would look really cool... :D

Yes, I know what you mean and I tend to agree. I think Kenniken has that available in his Scorecard mode, where it takes the four most important titles and quarters the shield.

But on that note, I wish we could also have several shields available or 'optional' for the same title, so that the most correct shield per scenario start could be chosen and available.

Nice idea. Would add some great visual flavour to the game.

I definitely support this, though it would be cool if dynasties had COAs attached to them rather than to titles.

I support this aswell, and to lesser extent Woody's addition on binding it to dynasties instead.

There is a saying in my country:

People would enjoy this like playing with plastic crap :D

Seemingly minor, but very very entertaining :)

Why not? If I remember correct, it was supposed to be in the first Crusader Kings. There's even a quarter.bmp mask for it in the gfx/CoA folder.

It won't make in the game because Paradox will tell us that it's not essential to game mechanics. And I am not sad and bitter, I am just speaking from experience.:)

:) I don't get my hopes high. I just expect a game,

we can expect a great game because CK1 was already a great game and Paradox will work on CK2 at least 1.5 year, so...

I fully support this idea. It'll add a lot of flavor. :)

Halving and Quartering is a great idea, along with other symbols and devices that can be superimposed over the shields of a common religion group to show legitimacy vs ilgtcy, heirs etcs... I don't however support attaching the COA's to familys, as it simply seems unpractical and would cause us to lose many of the well known Kingdom COA's upon the rise of a new dynasty.

I'm just trying to think mechanic-wise how they would do that, that's a pretty big undertaking. I do believe they should have a "Dynasty Creator" though, where we can pick a spot, name our family, and design our coat of arms, that would rock.

I don't think so! That kinda defeats the point of the CK series. If they do that, it's no longer a true Paradox game. Might as well ask to be able to customise a country to play in in EU3! The point of the game is to take a historical family, through a historical era, not take a completely made up family through a historical era. I would fully oppose such an addition to the game.

The shield quartering, however, is a great idea, and pretty simple. Have a blank quartered shield template, label each quarter A, B, C, D, and then place quarters there.

D A

C B

If 2 count titles are held, than the primary title holds the upper left, A, and the bottom right, C, or the left half, if you want halved CoA's as well. The other title holds the other positions. If there are 3 count titles, Primary gets A and C, and one of the titles get's D, one get's B. If there are 4 count titles, A is primary title, the others get the other spots. Once a count get's a duke title, it uses only that one duke title. Rinse and repeat.

I don't get it, if they added something like that for personal flair, whats the big deal? If a person wants to play historically, then just don't use it. If they don't add it, that's ok, I'll just mod again as would anyone else that wants to create their own family.

You never know, they may sell more games with the option of "Create your own dynasty as you struggle and gain power through the medieval ages". I know there are a lot of people out there that like personal customization, and they don't know how to mod. On top of that, it may appeal to some of the SIMS people out there, after all it's coming out around the same time as SIMS Medieval. They might say to themselves, "Oh hey, I thought SIMS Medieval was ok, but it wasn't deep enough, I need more!!" and here it is, Paradox's Crusader King's 2 that is also recently released.

I think we have an impasse. We simply have two different ideas of how the game should be developed.

Being realistic, though, I doubt that Paradox would put that in the game. Opinion put aside, it simply doesn't seem like their style. On the other hand, a proper Coat of Arms generator, and a more in depth campaign to go with it would be a brilliant addition to Mount and Blade. :D
