I like it even though quartered coat of arms weren't that usual during the CK time-period...

Remember that Johan told me that quartered coat of arms was only "a push of a button" away to activate in CK.

Then they must be in! It would add much immersion to the game :)

+1

it's totally in the RP optic of CK (personal ambitions) and illustrates the evolution of the player's realm/dynasty

I think this would be quite enjoyable.

Of course as Gwyn ap Nud said the quartering will have to be limited and superior titles replace the inferior ones.
Otherwise it can get messy after a while. ;-)

Possibly with the exception of if there are multiple prentending dynasties for a title as primary, in which case an inescutcheon would be a possible solution I suppose?
That is, the territory or territories under dispute displayed on the main (background) shield with a family shield on top of it (smaller and usually in the middle) like William III of England did with the house of Nassau.
In the case of coming heirs or pretenders of the same dynasty I suppose the english cadency system could be used since it is rather well defined and should be not so difficult to implement.

What if they allowed it, but only halved it and not quartered it, would you guys mind if they only went to that much detail? Basically, it could look like my avatar on the left, or split down the middle or something like that.

Your avatar is quartered, unless I'm completely missing your point.

Again.

I don't think so! That kinda defeats the point of the CK series. If they do that, it's no longer a true Paradox game. Might as well ask to be able to customise a country to play in in EU3! The point of the game is to take a historical family, through a historical era, not take a completely made up family through a historical era. I would fully oppose such an addition to the game.

Yes, especially all the glorious historical of [province name]'s:D

Personally I think it sounds great, but would turn out the opposite. I believe they game would get too messy, especially with large dynasties and the COAs would turn too generic over time.

Would there be an option to... remove quarters if I don't want them? I don't want my shield to look like a giant quilt blanket.

If they have it where it shows..

1st Whole Generation - 1 whole shield
2nd Mixed Generation - Split shield (or like my avatar for example)

Then I would be fine with it. I'm not saying "don't have it", I'm saying it shouldn't be overbearing, as in showing a large number of images per shield. If you marry into your original family (like they did with 1st cousins to maintain power) then your shield becomes whole again. If you marry outside your family eventually, it becomes split again.

The shields are only so big on the screen, and instead of zooming in to see what patterns are on a shield, I think it should be kept rather simple in design. I don't want to see it becoming this, and that was what I was originally referring to previously, and how that would be handled.

If you're worried about it becoming overhwhelming and ridiculous, well, there's an answer to that - make it a decision. Decisions solve everything.
All it'd need would be a nice "marshal Arms" button, after which you choose which of your titles you wish to combine and hey presto!

AI could probably marshal their arms based on which are most prestigious. I think that'd work. I know in CK the game automatically assigns a prestige cost to titles you want to claim. Just let AI rulers see use that.

Then again, modding in the quartered COAs is probably easier. I at least regularly use custom COAs in my CK games. :)

how I see it
quarters should represent your two highest tier titles

f.e.
if I've got 2 king titles i can choose to show :
-only one (my first)
-both, halved
-both quatered style like lordofsaxony's avatar
(this choice can easily be randomized for AI)

-if I own more king titles I can use only the 2 first

-same system for other tiers
-different tiers couldn't be mixed (same as CK1 where you always take the highest tier CoA)

-limited to 2 titles don't change too much CoA so you still can distinguish each Coa's origin after years
