Nice article but some correction to the it:
3. ALL plants have a maintenance cost and it is the cost of buying a new plant.

5. This is a matter of opinion. If you want to get moving at the missions faster – go with the Research branch instead.

6. Do away with the Military dwarf as well. Let the Dwarfling level up to about 10 to 15 (doesn’t take long at all) by the time you get yourself settled in with the food and tree balanced, some techs upgrades done, etc. they will be up to that level. Then switch them over to Military.

As an FYI, I introduced this list with a disclaimer:

"It should be noted that these tips worked well for me, but that’s not to say that they will all work for you."

I believe this implies that yes, these are opinions. My intention was for the reader to take what they like out of the list and mold them to fit their playstyle.

Thanks for reading the article!

No real need for a declaimer.

My entry on point 5 and 6 are really MY opinions.
Point 3 is really the only “correction” since you stated you weren’t sure on the issue.

I didn’t mean for it to come across like that. sorry about that.
;)

For initial exploring/resource acquisition, personally I like to dig UP. I go up to the highest level below the surface (so there's still some dirt overhead) and start clearing out that level. There's almost never open spaces in these upper levels so you're pretty much free to dig the whole level clear and build up a good supply of stone/iron/gold/tourmaline. If you need more you can just drop down a level and clear that one too. Having a few beds & a food table near your diggers that you can move around helps cut down immensely on travel time and keeps your diggers digging.

yep, and the most you might run in to up there (if anything) is a mole or gnome too.

. . . . . Plus if you break through to the surface - it gives your Dwarves a nice sunlight roof over head
:D

Nice write-up. I didn't know that you could teleport multiple units (though I dislike teleporting in general, because it removes the need for any military strategy).

Anyway, a couple of suggestions:

1. Level up your dwarflings (especially research and military) to level 10 or so before assigning them to a role. To make this go faster, immediately buy all the dwarflings you can when you upgrade a pool.

2. Sell your starting military dwarves after you've leveled up some dwarflings. A tenth level dwarfling assigned to a military role is much better than the ones you start with.

One tip I've got that I didn't realise until a couple of levels in:

There are often resources above you, but you can't see the roof. Solution? Choose your "Dig" tool and raise the block one above your work level. This should be highlighting the roof block of the area you're in. Now it will bring up a tooltip if you mouse over any resources. So simply drag your mouse across the roof of your tunnel/room and you can easily find hidden resources! This also works to see what's behind a wall/floor with a decoration on it without having to move/sell the decoration!

I love the fact that I learned a few tips from this thread. Good work guys.

Heh, it's always funny when the game developers find out new things. I have never done professional game development, but I was a level designer for a Mount & Blade mod. It was always cool to test something in game, go to the dev forum, ask "Hey did you guys know you can do this?" and half the devs are like "Wow we did that? Cool!"
