yep, and the most you might run in to up there (if anything) is a mole or gnome too.For initial exploring/resource acquisition, personally I like to dig UP. I go up to the highest level below the surface (so there's still some dirt overhead) and start clearing out that level. There's almost never open spaces in these upper levels so you're pretty much free to dig the whole level clear and build up a good supply of stone/iron/gold/tourmaline. If you need more you can just drop down a level and clear that one too. Having a few beds & a food table near your diggers that you can move around helps cut down immensely on travel time and keeps your diggers digging.
