I just won my first playthrough on Medium difficulty with 2 other competing mages. Pretty sure it was a Medium map and cylindrical with3 other worlds. It took me about 250ish turns and quite some time....I found it challenging but not overwhelming...I however did not visit any of the other worlds. I am wondering if perhaps the other worlds carry more weight in higher difficulties? DO alot of people do as I and just stay topside? I won by beating the rival mages.
Just curiouse.....I was definetly entertained.....one more turn syndrome! Love to hear others feedback!

Well, as soon as I've stabilized my normal cities, I send in a group to clear worlds.
For one, they have very nice resources, but also very rewarding lairs to clear.

But the monsters in there are stronger/more dangerous than normal world, so needs a solid force to clear.
Remember to send in settlers closely after, to make "roads" and to make use of the resources.

absolutely! those other worlds are honey pots..i wish they were harder with more consequences for opening them or reasons to go there besides treasure (like dremer anchors). I think certain resources like adamandium and neviril should only pop on other worlds.

"They do."

In my current game (default starting conditions) I have both a neviril and adamnadium terrain top-side. They were located on a small landmass near the first portal as well.

As for exploring the portal world, lots of fun battles (getting real good at killing dragons!) and plenty of good rewards. Lots of Holy Ground, precious resources, and I've found artifacts and Lords in the lairs.

Pretty much this for me.

I tend to go as early as possible. But it depends on the number of capable units I have at the stage I am ready. So turn time varies. Mostly on race and difficulty I am playing.

Its a good thing the devs decided not to implement Steam achievements or Id be playing this game non-stop! :evil grin:

Always. I try to go as early as possible as well, because other worlds generally give you a supreme hero like an elder witch, so its always worth exploring.

I would like to see more rewards/resources that are exclusively found in other worlds added to the game.

If lairs sometimes gave bonus XP to the unit that uncovers it, that would also be a fun boost. The real issue, I think, is that most races don't need more than one adamantium or nevril spot, or 2 or 3 Temples. So you really just go there for the large amounts of gems/gold/dwarven villages. Sometimes you really need a few holy grounds though.

Of course, if you are the Arethi, You want as much adamantium as you can find. Heck, if you even have ACCESS to arethi, you want it bad.

I'm only on my second game so my experience is limited. For a portal invasion force I've had success with just a handful of units:

1 Strong melee, preferably a durable tank (Melee Lord, Troll, etc.)
2 Strong ranged units
1 Support healer

It can get dicey at times if you get flanked while fighting a dragon however steady progress can be made. Save the "outer edge" elite monsters (Mossy Troll, Spider Queen, etc.) for last once you have rescued a high Lord and have a few temple elite units.

In my current game the second portal world was "activated" by an elemental fleeing into it and I didn't follow for quite a few turns. When I first entered the portal my unit was surrounded and all visible tiles had monsters (mainly lower level Elementals) present. Fortunately my invasion force was very experienced from the first portal world and was able to "break" the portal and I'm now in the process of clearing the rest of the world.

Initial force depends on a few things, like what units I have access to, and whether or not it has been activated. Halberdiers + Mages is a very consistent way to clear portals, for example, and can be done quite early. Any Helios Elite units can generally do it solo'd, except for Supreme camps. A single Wolf of Helia can pay itself back surprisingly fast, while the archers take longer but are in less danger.

Also had good experience with Liches, but you need to get some spells on them. Enchanted weapons + Life weapons pretty much makes them doom. But that's a much bigger investment.

Bowmasters can work, but I generally find it takes a long, long time.

there's also the question of whether you're looking to clear it, or merely loot it.

Looting is ridiculously easy, while clearing merely requires a ranged hero with 2-3 advanced ranged units, and a tank or 2 (ideally a healer that does spirit damage, although even goblin sharpshooters can). As long as you get the first hit you're golden.

I've also cleared using a werewolf (lure, absorbs the first hit from dragons and such while dishing out damage) backed with mere goblin archers and a sharpshooter before, but that did require quite a bit of spellcasting.

That ealry?? Usually i try to clear the other worlds when i have some temple units.
Blademasters, paladins of death or Dauros. But again, when i can support such an army, it's better to defeat the other mages than clearing the portals.
Except, if i don't have a nevril or adamantium resource.

The moment I get a portal near one of my cities, I make it the top priority to take the other world (trying to keep things calm in Ardania using diplomacy). Earlier, I often try to expand in the direction of the portal once I discovered it.

Yes, definitely that early. The earlier the better. I actually delay a bit longer in Armageddon, since it can suck to have supreme units suddenly spawn in the middle of an invasion force.

It depends though, on the availability of such portals. Sometimes you just aren't near to them at all.
