“Don’t sue your potential customers” argues Paradox Development Studio’s Johan Andersson
– “99% of people who pirate movies, music, games are not criminal people”

"Yesterday, we chatted with Paradox Development’s Studio Manager, Johan Andersson.
Fronting Paradox Development Studio’s paradoxically high-brow entertainment franchises, such as the Europa and Crusader Kings series,
Andersson claims the secret to beating piracy is to put valuable resources into making people want to pay for your game, rather than chasing after them with lawyers, threats, and pick-axes."

Hope this makes an interesting read for you :)

So instead of me pirating all the games I don't yet have can you just give them to me for a bit and if I like them I'll buy it? Is it a deal?

I admit, I often pirate the demo version of the game using the tricks and tips people provide, and then buy the game and every single dlc, so paradox is getting the right idea here, piracy is a great advocate for the developer, (please dont ban i buy every game of urs)
also yeah its a good idea to include features that will only possibly work in the legitimate version, as i read in the article.

I guess I'll be the guinea pig here and talk about pirating paradox games against forum rules, in this thread about pirating Paradox games, posted by Paradox. (If you're reading this and I'm banned, run!)

I pirated a Paradox game while I was a poor kid in college and hadn't heard of the studio. I learned to love Paradox games. Now I'm no longer a poor kid in college, and I buy Paradox games, and most of the DLCs too. They probably wouldn't be one of my favorite games developers today if I hadn't been bored with an internet connection one night. Thanks for everything, I love you guys, and sorry about, uhhh, that one time.

And thanks for having a non-dystopian worldview! (Unless I'm banned.)

I respect Paradox's work enough that I buy most of their games, even if I don't really have any intention of playing them, since I always seem to slip back into Victoria 2.

I wonder how many of those people who boast they buy games after pirating them actually did that.

I really do.

A lot.

Ominously, Johan said “Yeah – that’s likely… I can’t say more. We are announcing something in January, where we’re going to show off two games.” When asked out-right if they were going to be 3D, Johan said “There will be 3D in them, yes.”

Is this a hint of one of the two new games being a space strategy game? Assuming it is still a grand strategy game 3D only really seems useful for space games.

I never went out of my way to pirate a Paradox game, but I did live in China for quite some time, and it simply was impossible to buy legitimate copies of anything. My first copy of Vicky came from a pirate DVD store in Nanjing (I already owned a legit copy of HOI1 by this point - albeit one bought second hand in Brighton) where I regularly bought films. Ironically, living in China got me started in my career in intellectual property, and everything I see in my work bears out what Johan says in this interview - agressive enforcement against small players is pointless and self-defeating.

you don't have to wonder thankfully, just have a look at my shiny icons
Indeed, I was recommended EU3 by a friend and checked it out via... unspeakable methods.

I liked it, so I bought it, and then went on to buy quite a lot of other Paradox games.

Aye, I torrented HOI3 a good few years ago, having never heard of it (nor any other Paradox or the developer itself) before and with no plan to ever buy it, and loved it so much that I've since acquired it, all of it's expansions and DLC, and all sorts of other games :)

Pirating that one game has lead to a fair few £££'s into Paradox's coffers.
