As long as the supplies still flow in the west coast landings more troops should be transported there, but when no more troops can be supplied then consider a landing in Florida.

Panama canal should be soon Japanese so if everything else fails, there will be another landings!

Loving this - been wanting to give Japan a spin in HPP... impetus!

I am glad that you are loving this!

Nice AAR. :) I do have always difficulties to find correct mix of brigades for divisions. Can you show or tell which subunits you use in standard infrantry divisions now when you are attacking US mainland? 3 infrantry brigades, 1 artillery, 1 AT or what? I didn't found any info about this subject from earlier posts (or then I am blind).

Sure, I was planning to do such update when all 1942 gets researched (1 or 2 techs for support brigades are remaining) - after they got researched I will show my division composition with stats they have.

I've finished exams in school (not really but only one exam remains and I don't plan to learn much for this one) so I finally have some time. If I manage to free myself from my Victoria 2 Japan game I will release updates in increased frequency :)

Since he's using HPP, all arty gets rolled into one support brigade.

Yup, all the ART/AT/AA units get lumped into a SUP unit. Then you can decide, in the research tab, how should your SUP units be specialized like. Say, you decide to not research SUP AT techs and you'll rather decide to invest into tank destroyers... your call! It's usually resonable to invest into all of the branches as a major though ;)

zhAAjE7.jpg

In the early hours of 16th June 23 'Asahi' Hoheishidan and 11 'Nishiki' Hoheishidan divisions orderly retreated from province Needles. Pressure of of allied forces was simply too high so orderly withdrawal was ordered.

5hGiI6l.jpg

Situation in the north looks more promising. There are few infantry and militia divisions but no large force that could cause some trouble.

5XiQ0me.jpg

The US division trapped in San Jose was forced to surrender after huge part of its men was killed in desperate attempt to break from the encirclement they've entered. US Army desperately attacked provinces bordering with San Jose in attempt to free their captured divisions but these attempts were futile.

meup3Xm.jpg

Panama's government fled into exile shortly after IJA forces entered their capital, Panama city. After Panama's capital was secured an attack in Panama canal guarded by lone garrison division has begun.

Rg2DGOk.jpg

22nd June brought two important improvements in the filed of military science. Officer training of Japanese officer has been improved which will indirectly boost combat efficiency as attacking units won't need to spend as much time between attacks as they've needed.
After research of proximity fuses the soft attack bonus gained from heavy artillery guns advance looks small but every drop counts. Soon all support brigades will receive upgraded heavy artillery.

e4e8VTB.jpg

After one successful breakthrough achieved by US army the defensive line once again stands and holds against their attacks. Mainly due to 2 fresh corps of infantry which arrived earlier in the June.

UvqPeSf.jpg

Last battle on the defensive line took place in Los Banos, in bloody battle 3 IJA divisions managed to repel numerous attacking force.

O43oCTf.jpg

Battle for Keeler was lost shortly before reinforcements have arrived. Just few hours were missing for reinforcements to arrive and to turn tide of the battle.

qWJ21UJ.jpg

In the north which is full of forests, mountains and rivers the terrain is always favourable for defenders. In this situation 3 IJA divisions are attacking 3 allied divisions which are attacking 3 Japanese assault divisions which are together with other 2 IJA divisions attacking lone US division in the mountains.

wMWpPJX.jpg

Ground attack executed 25th June in Needles was the bloodiest so far.

3a6SyVX.jpg

27th June attack on Needles, province used as one attack axis towards Death Valley, was ordered. 17 'Tsuki' Hoheishidan, 22 'Hara' Hoheishidan and 23 'Asahi' Hoheishidan attacking from Baker had no troubles dislodging US defenses, especially after bloody ground attacks which preceded the attack.

FZIbKDa.jpg

Garrison division guarding Panama canal didn't manage to hold ground against attack of 4 IJA divisions and surrendered on 27th June leaving Panama canal to Japanese. The canal was secured on 29th June and Imperial Japanese Navy accepted this nice gift.

dUjeOhU.jpg

While Needles were lost for quite some time and Keeler was lost Imperial Japanese army managed to capture province Independence and turned it into mountainous fortress. In previous attack on Independence for 265 Japanese dead in defense 1455 US soldiers died. If the offensive is south will ever turn into defense Independence will be key point to defense.

PS: I've noticed that pictures in first few updates are missing (I was experimenting with imageshack) I will try to restore them in the following week.
PSS: Thank you for 30k views!!!

it's a very decent kill ratio, considering you are invading the US mainland is even better

It looks like Japan is here to stay now, nice!
But where are the American tanks? This update, unless I'm mistaken, I only spotted 1 US mechanised division, everything else seems to be infantry. Shouldn't they be building more IC-expensive units rather than foot soldiers? I'd imagine those would give you (a little bit) more resistance to deal with.

I've seen one or two armor divisions in the South and couple of mechanized divisions but most of their divisions are just infantry ones.

I am going to play tomorrow (damn you Victoria 2!) and it will be probably larger session so expect maybe two updates ;)

31. The invasion, part 6
(1st July - 14th July 1942)

VjvyPAN.jpg

With Keeler under Allied control defenders of Death Valley are in difficult position as they are exposed to attacks from multiple directions.

LyZKbgT.jpg

In the north steady Japanese progress has not yet been stopped. It looks like that progress will stop only after there won't be enough divisions to properly man the front, at the moment 18 IJA divisions are fighting in the north.

DiyQ4xx.jpg

To relieve the pressure put on Death Valley an attack has been launched towards Keeler in order to regain the province. Attack on Keeler forced US army to reconsider the attack on Death Valley as the attack there was canceled 2 hours later. During the battle of Death Valley 893 Japanese and 1358 US died.
The attack on Keeler succeeded 2 days later when US army was forced to withdraw after Mili Shidan and Taiwan Shidan inflicted almost two times bigger causalities to defenders of Keeler that they've suffered. 730 IJA and 1429 US soldiers died during battle of Keeler.

0AawEDJ.jpg

With Panama canal secured a gateway to Atlantic opened for Imperial Japanese Navy. SNLF was tasked to execute probing attack on Miami, Florida. Whole operation was without slight resistance as Miami was left without garrison.

QXrqvlg.jpg

Another 9 divisions have arrived to Los Angeles, including one corps of Japanese "armoured horses" with one light tank division of major general Kawabe Masakasu, general with skill 6 (other generals of armoured horses corps have skill 5) which makes his divisions even more deadly.

YscUZF4.jpg

The only engagements during attack on Miami were naval ones. In Eastern Straights of Florida Imperial Japanese Navy carrier task force engaged and sunk US 14th Submarine division. Shortly before this engagement Japanese CAGs executed two port strikes and completely destroyed Lew Wallace Flotilla transport fleet.
After sinking 14h submarine flotilla IJN carrier task force intercepted fleet of 4 transport flotillas and sunk all of those.

QJGDalx.jpg

Canadian defenders of Castlegar, province with excellent options for defense, have been expelled from there and IJA garrisons will soon start to dig in there as there are not enough divisions in the north to support the vast expansion.

ngju0CB.jpg

Imperial Japanese Airforce heavy fighters were tasked of executing ground attacks in the north as no visible threat from USAAF has been spotted there. Performance of one air fleet consisting of two heavy fighter wings surprised me as I was not expecting US causalities to be such high. At the moment Japanese airforce is lacking some serious power for executing ground attacks as there are only 3 air fleets capable of executing some serious ground attacks, 2 air fleets of two medium bomber each and this heavy fighter fleet. Japanese airforce is also possessing of air fleet of 3 light bomber wings but due to their short range their usage is fairly limited.

qc7qU38.jpg

After successful seizing of Miami IJN carrier task force and SNLF are departing towards new mission, if the east cost is like Miami SNLF will execute series of landings in major US cities to inflict panic among US citizens.

tyPpyNz.jpg

First chosen city was no other than Washington D.C., capital of the US which was left completely and utterly undefended only with one light cruiser and one transport fleet in the port (which were both sunk due to port strikes).
If Americans were celebrating Independence day this year this will force them not to celebrate it following year.

01IjAbX.jpg

In the north attack on Lind is drawing to an end as Allied resistance is much lower there. During bloody battle for Lind 1813 Japanese and 2687 US died. However the battle for Shaniko brought much pleasant result as for 419 Japanese dead 2687 US died.

iBC4ns8.jpg

Shortly after Taiwan Shidan under command of Horii Tomitaro arrived to Keeler Imperial Japanese forces found themselves under heavy attack so it was decided - Taiwad Shidan will orderly withdraw from there and the province will be left under US control for a while.

kWORtLB.jpg

Washington D.C., capital of the US, has fallen to the hands of Imperial Japanese army without firing a single shot. Shortly one infantry corps from Panama and one infantry corps from Gibraltar will arrive there to create small beachhead in order to distract US Army and SNLF will continue in their mission of sowing terror and panic.

66IXEdr.jpg

Shortly after capturing Castlergar 30 'Hyo' Hoheishidan division which was tasked of capturing the province and digging there was attacked by US. The attack initially came from Marcus but it was reinforced so 10920 Japanese were defending the ground against 32980 US soldiers. The us attack was recalled two days later after about 250 men were lost on each side.

gm7WnOv.jpg

Another US attack in the north came on McKenzie. 4 Kiheishidan were defending the ground against 4 divisions attacking from multiple directions and managed to defend the position and inflict four times bigger casualties to the attackers - 203 Japanese cavalrymen died there while attackers lost 859 men there.

rCj1emd.jpg

2 IJA divisions attacked Big Creek, province which was exposed to Japanese ground attacks for some time which resulted to complete disorganization of Canadian divisions and battler of Big Creek was won without any significant effort.

how's the surrender progress?

Looks like you've pretty much got this. Are you utilizing espionage? I'm curious to what the U.S. is building and their troop movements.

At the moment I am using only domestic spies for counterespionage and occasional boost of NU/ruling party organization. With increased spy cost in terms of leadership I rarely use spies offensively when I play HPP.

how's the surrender progress?

It's around 20%. The biggest problem I face is lack of troops to properly man the front as I was not expecting an invasion to happen this soon. I wonder if I set allied objectives to Washington D.C. whether German and Italian AI will send some units there (SNLF are sitting there on extreme amount of supplies and fuel).

It looks like the USA is knee deep in trouble. With their capital gone their supplylines are in disarray and they have hostile forces both in the east and in the west. To top it off, your very experienced army kicks their ass all over the continent :)

That end-run on Washington was well done! I don't see long term success in the USA as its manpower and industrial might is going to be completely focused on you now.

But getting all the plum resources by capturing DC will definitely set them back a bit for now. Where's the new US capital?

(15th - 31st July 1942)

Probably the most famous IJA division 10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan led by one of the most famous generals Kawabe Masakasu, which has been awarded multiple times for his brilliant command, started attack on Modesto. Even with continuous ground attacks, which made previous attack on Big Creek joke, this was a tough battle as river-crossing penalty was against Japanese this time.

aIdfVBM.jpg

Improvement in techniques of infantry training is always welcome. The biggest benefit of this is not increased organization but morale which speeds organization regain and helps Imperial Japanese Army to keep going.

00Bca1E.jpg

Immediately after 2 IJA divisions arrived to Big Creek they've found themselves under attack coming from Bishop. However due to favourable terrain and inferiority of the Canadian army this was an easy battle to fight.
6 hours after arrival of 11 'Nishiki' Hoheishidan and 8 'Sugi' Hoheishidan into Big Creek the battle for Modesto has been finally won. After 6 days long battle causalities were high on both sides.

arx4Dvt.jpg

10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan didn't even bother to stop in Modesto and rushed towards Placerville, mountainous province which used by US Army command. Luckily, Placerville was defended only by disorganized Canadian cavalry divisions which has been previously expelled from Big Creek. The battle against that one Canadian division lasted for 2 days and kill ratio for this one was more than pleasing when the fact that it was attack into the mountains is taken into account: 122 dead on Japanese side and 1286 dead Canadians.

koMK0vZ.jpg

Castlegar is under attack once more. This time by two US Army divisions. The battle lasted for 6 days till 27th July, 15 o'clock when US Army recalled the attack which resulted in much welcome relief in Japanese high command - should US army persevere in their attack they would have defeated the lone IJA division before reinforcements could arrive. 1156 and 1351 Americans died during battle of Castlegar.

FwkrqQw.jpg

10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan excels once more as this division managed to complete encirclement of 3 US Army divisions (8 infantry brigades and 4 militia brigades) which were promptly destroyed.

llFA3Ot.jpg

In the southern cape of north beachhead the advance of IJA has been stopped. Japanese cavalry has been already expelled from McKenzie and division occupying Redmond was ordered to retreat into more favourbale positions.

C057M9P.jpg

After 3 US divisions have been shattered infantry holding the defensive line moved a bit in order to form new line of defense and attack on Bishop, province which was used as a base for attacks on Big Creek in attempts to rescue trapped 3 divisions, has been started. Amongst the defenders were two disorganized infantry divisions which were attempting to take Big Creek before the roles between US Army and IJA swapped.

6L4ZtDD.jpg

Shortly after Bishop has been acquired came an another attack from Imperial Japanese army towards Beatty. Three battles must have been fought before defenders were expelled from there. In the first one against well prepared defenders 144 Japanese and 519 US Army soldiers died (the battle lasted only for 11 hours) and in the second one where only one US divisions fought 1151 Americans died while attacking IJA lost only 68 men. The last one resulted in 75 dead on Japanese side and 789 dead on the side of the US.

S91ERT9.jpg

Both US and Japanese reinforcements have arrived into Washington D.C. area. Japanese CAGs operating from carrier task force anchored directly in Washington D.C. are working hard on gaining air superiority while waiting for SNLF to gather for an upcoming operations.

8jCW43v.jpg

Japanese army is pushing hard towards Beatty and Tonopah. If 10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan manage to arrive in Tonopah before US militias retreating from Keeler it looks like one infantry and one militia division will be completely surrounded by IJA and crushed. Imperial Japanese aircraft is executing interdiction in order to slow down retreating units and give Kawabe Masakasu's light tanks a bit more time to secure Tonopah.
Originally there were 5 divisions in Keeler but they've slowly started to retreat when they saw an upcoming menace, but trapping and completely destroying at least one infantry division and moving forwards from that bloodied hole which Keeler surely is will be a success.

Ah, the Canadians are here now... the only ones to come now are the Polish Cavalry ;)

And news from Europe? Are Germany and Italy doing something like constructing ships and planes to eventually support you?

33. The invasion, part 8
(1st - 15th August 1942)

qKIXj90.jpg

10 'Kurogane' Hoheishidan arrived into Tonopah and encirclement of Keeler seems to be one step closer.

U6Ikq4A.jpg

Keeler is finally surrounded and two more US divisions are trapped (4 militia brigades, 3 infantry brigades and 2 horse-towed support brigades).

aASdXt7.jpg

Another infantry corps have arrived to the north beachhead and are immediately assigned to reinforce cavalry near Redmond.

EXrnIym.jpg

After destruction of 2 divisions in Keeler and another 3 divisions in Modesto the momentum is finally at Japanese side. New target for encirclement is selected, Carson City is defended by 2 inferior Canadian divisions but everything counts.

Cvb1PV0.jpg

Alexandria in vicinity of Washington D.C. is under attack - by a garrison division. It looks like Americans are becoming desperate.

g0OK79i.jpg

Canadians located in Round Mountain (red highlight) was attacked by superior Imperial Japanese Army force. Out of over 100 thousand attacking IJA soldiers only 84 died while defending Canadians have lost 1199 out of their 33667 troops.

UKd4S0K.jpg

In the end one Canadian infantry divisions was trapped (it's really Canadian, but it was exp'd the moment Carson City was surrounded). The other Canadian division was cavalry one thus faster and managed to escape.

BHXqa2k.jpg

Southern front finally begun to move and after destroying 6 divisions the momentum is finally visible. As a bonus in the 15 days, this update is covering, kill ratio has risen from 2.78 to 2.97. I am finally feeling confident about defeating USA and I'd say the US will somewhere in the middle of 1943.

Looks like your extremly experienced troops cut right through the US' troops. More so because the US is deploying more and more militia forces. Which on the one hand makes sense, an invasion caused them to mobilise everyone capable of fighting, but on the other hand doesn't seem to pose much of a threat to these veteran Japanese soldiers. Still, I really like the way you've planned this invasion, stage by stage.

great!! maybe now its time for peace? after all, the historical Japanese plan was to create a puppet in the Western Coast
