Guys,

Are we going to have an option to get rid of that HUGE BLUE Tweeter bird on the top the screen. I know it displays notifications but can we hide it when there is no new notification?

Its annoyingly blocking the view.

Cheers

I was one that paid extra for the 'deluxe' edition of SimCity 2013. The constant and insistent nagging of Dr Vu provoked me to get up from my chair and phone EA's customer service department in the US (from England) and request that they turn it off for me; this meant that they turned off the deluxe 'features' so I could play the game without raging all the time - EA's customer service is excellent by the way.

So why am I posting? I'm worried; I don't mind the bird, it's cute, but if there is no way to turn off any repetitive information that it might provide, then that is going to upset me; it's going to upset me a lot. It remains to be seen if other game mechanisms allow me to turn off any constant chirping from residents in my city... but if there is no other control of this kind of annoyance, then there does NEED to be a kill switch here.

Yes. Yes it is. It is big as a design element. Elements take up more than just its own pixels; it also takes up the space around it, especially if the element changes shape all the time. It takes up significant space at the top of the screen. It's in the middle, so yes, it is intrusive. Elements that are places in the middle are intrusive. That's why they are placed in the middle. (Look at the CitiesXL notifications for a more extreme example of this.) "Just moving a little" is a solution for a problem that should not exist in the first place and even is a problem itself. You don't want to interrupt the workflow of the player because they have to move the screen a few cms so they can see behind an unhidable element.

The placement of the notification icon is extremely poor design.

I am afraid the first thing I noticed when the first video came out was that blue bird and I found myself moving my own head in a vain attempt to see round it. It is even more noticeable when the camera is moving than it is in still pictures and I predict that I will find the irritation at the greatest of all when I am trying to do some intricate layout and think exactly where everything should go, and have the screen zoomed in to closely fit the area I am trying to design the layout for. It will be right there in a space I am trying to map out in my mind. When you're trying to design something you have so much to hold in your brain before beginning, any extra subconcious mental work trying to ignore an obstruction is unwelcome.

Surely the bird can fly...

The cute chirper could be a tad smaller, and fly to a corner...

It could stay the size it is, if it stays in the corner!

agreed, the bird is useless and is annoying (can tell without playing the game)

You know what else is annoying,
- its huge size
- its being in the center of the screen
- its constant visibility even when you zoom in

Did you think you could see whats behind the bird if you moved your head watching a video of someone else playing the game?
If the bird were smaller do you think you could move your head and see whats behind it in a video?

#wow

It was an automatic response to an obstruction. We'd do that in real life, so it's a response we do subconsciously. Obviously I very quickly laughed at myself for trying to do something futile. Anyway I am not used to seeing UI in the middle, any time *other* than something that needs immediate action, and then usually the game pauses until you read and dismiss, upon which time the entire lot disappears back into the corner or vanishes completely. I think most UI designers know there is a good reason for that.

^^ You was very polite but the overall effect was this one:

But ok, he deserves that 'cause everyone understood what you meant, in the first place.

Anyway i don't think the bird is that big and didn't find myself bobbing my head around in a vain attempt to see behind it in a video. Consciously or Subconsciously. But that's just me.
I would say that's a little exaggerated, but i wouldn't discount the fact it may have been a reflex to you. I also do not routinely jump out of the way of oncoming traffic from my TV, but that's just me.

Will be easy to move the camera in game to see behind the so called 'HUGE' bird. As for the subconscious head movement in pics and vids i dunno if putting it in a corner would solve this problem.

I would say Bird is ok, hardly a big deal; but if it is causing some people to unconsciously move their heads around to see whats behind it in videos maybe the bird needs to go.

Yeah if this happens to you subconsciously because the bird i would say it needs to go

There will not be an option to turn it off I'm afraid.
Wait, do I have my dates mixed up? Did you post that on April fools day?

Seriously big mistake... I've seen the two sides... Those that love it and those that hate it. Having the option to turn it on or off depending on whether or not you love it or hate it is rarely ever a bad idea.

Perhaps it will be moddable, and modders can simply make it invisible or change it into something less annoying (annoying to those that hate it already and haven't even played the game, only imagine the rage they'll feel when they finally get to play your gem of a game only to find out something that annoyed them in screenshots and videos can't actually be turned off... ouch!)

I love it and I don't want to turn it off!!! I just want to move it to the side :)
Can I safely assume though that you would not want to prevent others from being able to turn it off if they so chose to do so?

Options are a great thing, and it's sad when developers don't keep that in mind when building their games. Yeah there comes a point where the options panel is so bloated that it discourages people from using some of the options but I guess that's where the developers need to step in and draw the line, but this tweety bird.... Well... I don't want to see it at all in my game but I'd not be the one to not let others see it just because I don't want to see it.

+1

Its actually very simple
- 20% people absolutely LOVE this birdy (they don't want this to be removed or moved)
- 40% people want this to be removed or have an option to hide it
- 20% people don't really care
- 20% people think it should be moved to the corner

Well I guess there should be an option to hide it at least if we don't wanna make LOVERS angry :D

this is data from this thread.
I'll give you a guess for the whole C:SL community but a much more down to earth estimation:
-1% people love the chirper
-1% hate it/want it moved away
-98% don't care because it's a small chirper not influencing anything.

;)
