People saying Theocracies died out and had to secularize...

This is the game where you can reunite the Mongol hordes in to the great Khanate, where you can unite the HRE in to a mega-empire, where you can reform the religion of the Aztec and invade Europe, where you can restore the Caliphate, where you can form Hindustan. You can form the Kingdom of Jerusalem, form a Christian/Protestant empire, save the Ming and alter the history of China, conquer China with Japan, etc.

I don't think having a proper end game goal for theocracies is even the 20th craziest thing that could happen in game. It'd probably be like the 47th craziest thing you could do.

Give theocracies some crazy reform mechanics like the HRE or Aztecs. Make them fueled by religious zeals to pass reforms in to becoming a mega religious empire. Maybe give them CBs on distant enemies that aren't the same religion with the primary goal being to convert their provinces and then the nations themselves. Hell I can see it right now:

Reform 1: Gives CBs on all heretics. During this CB provinces sieged down will be converted, and the wargoal is to capture the capital and enforce religion upon them.

Reform 2: Gives CBs on all heathens, same as the above.

Reform 3: Something something become a permanent center of reformation for your religion.

Reform 4: Something something permanent discipline buff.

Reform 5: Something something kingdom of whatever god(s) you worship. Can now spend excess zeal to build new center of reformations for your religion.

Declaring war on heretics/heathens builds zeal. Taking provinces from heretics/heathens builds zeal. Converting territories/nations builds zeal, converting nations rather than conquering them builds a lot of zeal. Attacking same-religion loses a lot of zeal. Takes X zeal to pass a reform. Changing religion loses all reforms and zeal.

Then just allow any country with completed religious ideas to convert to a Theocracy so long as they have 100 legitimacy and 50 prestige. Add a new government type "dynastic theocracy" and boom you're set.

That is so overpowered that it's insane.

There was a great suggestion in the suggestion forum a few months ago I got inspired by to design some more flavor and fun for theocracies in. I doubt we'll have an entire expansion dedicated to Theocracies, but its just common sense to add it in to another expansion soon.

One thing I'd like to see is events and mechanics for radical Protestant or Reformed "theocracies" like Münster under John of Leiden or Florence under Savonarola.

Yay! Thanks Johan.

A religion focused dlc wouldn't be a bad idea, considering countering the reformation and such was a big topic during the era.

Yeah agreed +1 religion really need more special stuff not only theocracies, but also dividing animist and shamanist. :)

I agree. Religion was the biggest thing in early modern Europe, it deserves a more central role in the game.

I'm not very familiar with Asian religions, although there could be some events dealing with the European missionaries who tried to convert kings/countries in Asia. (Maybe even player-guided?)
f.e. Because of a missionary, your ruler becomes Christian, there could be some events giving unrest penalties or westernizing benefits.

if paradox can afford to they should find a local historian who specializes in far east matters (from what I can tell cities skylines did really well so here's hoping!).

I think there are plenty of players who have an extended knowledge of 'Eastern matters', it's not a matter of being able to afford somebody, it's a matter of finding someone willing to do this without (ludicrous) monetary compensations.

the question is do they really know and understand how these religions/philosophies work? after all the Far east is a very complicated beast

I agree with others saying a Theocracy DLC would be too focused on a very small subsection of the game. However! Like others are saying, a Religious-focused DLC would be grand. Maybe clean up/flesh out the League Wars a bit more, give events and some uniqueness to Theocracies, make Protestantism more interesting than flat bonuses (seems so... lame... compared to the uniqueness of Catholicism and Reformed). Improve the East Asian religions, maybe do something with Pagans... possibly add more religions like how they've done with Coptic, Ibadi, Sikh, etc? Would be a great DLC!

+1 Devotion

I had an idea for a DLC not just about theocracies, but about "doomed states," as many of the prominent theocracies at gamestart were. It would provide alternate history events and the like for those states if they made it past their historical end or did ahistorically well. Main focus would be on the Crusader States and the Hordes, but it would probably impact other states as well.
If you want to be about "Doomed States", relace hordes with Merchant Republics. Other wise you don't have a "Doomed States" DLC, but a "Some of the Doomed Stats + friends".

The devotion suggestion seemed quiet good. I would be in favour of a Res Publica kind of extension around theocracies (the papacy getting a bit of extra love), holy orders and secularisation, but it is not likely to happen.

I'd prefer that they keep things focused so we don't end up with something like non-Norse pagans in CK2. Something revolving around Christian theocracies, the Papacy, and the Reformation would make a great small DLC (Res Publica-sized).
