CK2 Dev Diary #12: The Maim event

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about ZombieInvasion <Secret DLC*>! Today we’ll take a look at what we’ve done to the Maimed trait. Well, we’ve removed it! People without <Secret DLC> can still be Maimed, of course, but the lucky owners of <Secret DLC> will instead receive more specific injuries, such as: One-handed, One-legged, One-Eyed, Disfigured, or Mangled (this represents severe trauma to the torso, mostly). As well as allowing more specific wounds and flavor, this has allowed us to remove the Health penalty from most of these traits (Mangled still has one though). Instead, when you receive a maiming-type injury you will also receive the Severely Injured trait, which has some health and stat penalties, but will be lost after some time has passed. Afterall, while losing a hand is certainly not an enjoyable process, you do eventually heal up and can be perfectly healthy besides the missing appendage. Also, if anyone is feeling creative, please suggest interesting effects for these new traits - we do of course have some penalties on them, but I worry they are a little dull, so fire away and I may shamelessly steal your ideas.

Since both One-eyed and Disfigured affect the faces of characters, we have added a lot of new portrait props to reflect this. Here is a small sample of what you might see ingame:

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies

One-handed: Lunatic/high-learning vikings (or all Scandinavians?) should be able to get swords attached to their stump. This actually happened in a fantasy saga from the Middle Ages (Egils saga einhanda).

One-legged: Perhaps some flavor event related to the flying machine event? You may never walk again, but you might fly. (Not really, but you don't know that).

Cheers for the DD Darkrenown :D. Definitely a very CK2 appropriate topic, and love the extra depth to the flavour/character that this'll bring. Am very impressed how you and all the other people working on CK2 have kept deepening the game over time.

as far as losing a hand goes it would be cool if you take the war focus and learn how to master weapons in your off hand as a event chain.

maybe some kind of siege assault modifier for left handed people.
historically speaking:

Spiral staircases were a clever defence in medieval castles. They were almost always built with the spiral in the same direction (clockwise, when looking up from the bottom) so that the defending swordsman, who would either be coming down the stairs or backing up in reverse, could freely swing his sword. Conversely, the attacking swordsman (ascending the stairs) would have his swing blocked by the wall.

This, of course, assumed that both attacker an defender were right-handed, which most were.

Left-handed swordsman, though rare, had the advantage of surprise when attacking out-in-the-open – they had fought (and trained against) more right-handed opponents than their adversary had fought left-handed opponents. Their attack when

ascending standard spiral staircases was also not blocked by the wall.

maybe some kind of siege assault modifier for left handed people.

How about an event where this maimed character is having trouble adapting to their disability, someone could choose to mock them for a huge opinion hit and makes the character depressed, or they could 'lend them a hand' and become friends.

We do not. We had thought about Deafness as a trait, but there are so many events where you are assumed to be hearing someone talk it would have either ment disabling or re-writing them for a marginally interesting trait.

Disable them and have specific deaf-related events. Doesn't have to be much, just a few.

Would some of these injures prevent anyone from having more kids?
There will probably be a way to have eunuchs be created by an unfortunate swordstroke to the naughty regions of the body. I suspect that the ERE, Georgians, Armenians, and Alans will still be the one's to use that type of injury as a lovely punishment for insubordinate strategosoi.

That's just a stereotype that was made up after the age of Piracy in tales and stories. In actuality a small number of Seamen and Pirates wore eye-patches for legitimate reasons, some even wore it for style.
It is this very stereotype that increases the fleet levy size, since the eyepatch makes everybody certain that the man is no real pirate, thus making the honorable sailors gather. Either that or it was a joke

I recall the mythology of Odin and Mimer (Mimir), and how Odin sacrificed his eye for wisdom - and how Odin afterwards appeared for the common men as a one-eyed stranger. So there could be some interesting events for Norse Pagans, where perhaps one-eyed people can be either "hunted" or "worshipped", or a really crazy/zealous ruler can maim himself that way, to gain the same knowledge and wisdom... Don't know, just the first thing I came to think of...

Perhaps characters with one eye gain "Odin-like" trait (for the Norse pagans), or characters fully blinded gain "second sight" trait when part of any pagan faith or lowborn (because pagan superstitions still stuck around among the peasantry), treated as seers or oracles. Could expand on this with the fantasy events option to make them actually gain the second sight. Subtracts from combat skill (but not by -4), blindspot events, etc.

One-eyed characters gain +1 to Pirate-y-ness. Gain pirate trait with parrot, peg leg, hook hand & viking traits.

One-armed/handed characters maybe gain an advantage to combat skill (opponents underestimate them, they practice even harder and become better than ever before), but only after a long chain of difficult events & practice. We need ways to eventually turn some of these disadvantages into advantages for our characters. Maybe similar event chains could lead to Trickster trait as an alternative.

Disfigured characters get diplomacy hits, but they can turn it to their advantage on the intrigue front, using rumor and a mask to add to their mystique and terrify their subjects.

Characters with any kind of these traits have a higher chance to impart their traits on a disabled ward/son/daughter/other relative. Even higher if the ward/son/daughter/etc's trait is the same.

OOOH! Imagine insane AI characters fixated on forcing their own mutilations on others via torture! That would be terrifying! Olaf the Singlehanded singhandedly made all his subjects similarly singlehanded.

I think I will have more ideas soon.

EDIT: I'd only gotten through about the first page before I posted this. I still think the second sight idea is good though. Would add more to Pagan faiths. Could have characters called "The Seer". It would be cool.

One-armed people having an advantage is a little too far actually. Perhaps a chance at a surprise during duels. But I do like the Trickster idea.

And the maimed trait characters having some kind of stronger bond and connection would be interesting.

Mostly, I just want ways for characters to turn these traits to their advantage through interesting event chains, having the right other traits, etc.

Quoted for truth. Suomenusko is extremely bland and that's what I usually play. Romuva and West-African aren't probably that much better.
As a person that mostly plays Romuva, you know, that one pagan religion which stayed in Europe for the longest time, I have to say I don't see any difference between West African and Romuva.
Oh wait, I found something.
Names of gods from events.

We now have blind trait, why not mute or deaf

I heard in some culture/religion people will cut the prisoners' tongues off to prevent them speaking ill of whatever they should not be in the first place.
So Mute/Tongueless: -10 Diplomacy, Maximum Dip is capped at Learning (Character can only communicate in writing)

And deaf, in ancient Persia and Greece (if I remember correctly) people will drip Mercury on prisoners' ear to deafen them forever (and with high fatality).
Deaf: -10 Diplomacy, -5 Martial, -5 personal combat modifier

Burnt, I don't think this would be necessary because most people burnt in that age will die within days.
