CK2 Dev Diary#24: The 2.6.2 patch

Hello and welcome back to another CK2 Development Diary. The 2.6.2 update looms rather near now, and if everything goes to plan it should be released on Thursday (hopefully we will have an open beta on Friday). I’ll start out with the bad news; due to some unforeseen problems one of the game rules I mentioned last week will not be included with this patch: The Multiplayer Assassination rule. However, we do have two other game rules for you which you may find interesting:

  1. De jure Requirement: Default/Required. On default, nothing changes, but with “Required” characters who hold titles which have de jure land will eventually lose the title if they don’t hold any of the de jure land.
  2. Horse Lords:Nomad Stability: Unstable/Stable. Now when a Khagan dies, his vassals have the possibility to break away and form their own realms -with the new Khagan getting a CB on them. Setting “Stable” keeps the old behaviour.

There was some outcry last week because Jews and Zoroastrians didn’t also get a crusader style trait, so I’ve managed to sneak both in with the Shaddai and Gond-i Shahanshah traits. While we were in a trait-adding mood, both Cannibal and Lover’s Pox were changed from character modifiers to traits (although we have left the old modifier checks in place so ongoing games aren’t broken).
traits_2.6.2.jpg

The Gender Equality gamerule and laws revealed a few problems with Muslim events always assuming Muslim rulers would be male, so we’re spend a bit of time adding the appropriate checks which should result in a more flavourful Muslim experience.

As well as this, there are plenty of small fixes and additions to many other things, but I’ll let you explore the game and/or the patchnotes to discover them for yourselves.

I still hold that it's one Platypus many Bob. It makes sense to me.
let's argue something more meaningful, like how do you feel about the oxford comma?
(And when I say let's argue that I am being ironic we really shouldn't)

Challenge accepted. The Oxford comma is the superior way of delineating lists in written form. While it does not resolve all ambiguity, it resolves more ambiguity than the alternative, in my experience.

My personal preference has always been to use it only where ambiguity would ensue from the lack of it.

So, update: We've found an annoying crash and it may not be fixed by tomorrow. If we can't fix it in time we'll release 2.6.2 as an opt-in beta patch so those who like to live dangerously can use it until we fix it.

@Darkrenown
Any hope for an "Education System" Conclave/Classic rule?

I'm not against the idea, but not in this patch.

Name, that you use now is one of G-d's names, and we, Jews, are very careful in using these names outside praying. So, if instead of "Shad-dai" you will use "Halutz" or "Kanai" we will be able to play without danger of saying G-d's name without reason. And it will be more flavour, too

Confirming it was changed it to Kanai.

Have you made any changed to landed_titles.txt?

How is it then possible to get an almost 2000 years old character in 867?
In the past the engine couldn't handle characters born pre 0 AD. Hence why Augustus is set to have been born in 3 AD in the title history of the ERE.

I don't think landed titles has changed.

Event created characters can be any age. I'll be honest though, his DoB looks stupid. Still, it's worth it to me to have a super old guy turn up to stab you.

For many versions it has been possible. If a character is created by event rather than by the history files, said character could have a negative date of birth. I wrote one that added Augustus via event making him the approximate correct age. (The age does seem to drift a little here and there when negative, however.)

Yup.

Cheers for the DD Darkrenown :). Yet again, you have failed to provide a smaller, less substantial DD despite your promise last week (patchnotes are pretty extensive imo, with some good stuff in there) :p. I like these two things in particular (ie, rule changes, and revenge of the killer platypuses) :).

I'm sorry, I'll definitely try to do worse in future! :)

Which is default setting? Unstable or Stable?
If stable isn't default setting, would it disable achievements?

Unstable, no chevo disabling with either of the rules I mentioned.

I cannot wait till this patch with all it's love for non-Christian/Muslim/Norse religions. I know this might not be the place for this but could you make decadent Caliphates harm Islamic Moral Authority or perhaps having a decadent dynasty harm Islamic vassal opinion to lower stability of powerful Islamic empires?

I'm very thankful for all the flavour you are adding to defensive pagans, guys.

Could be possible to add some flavour stuff to heresies in the future? Thanks for your hard work.

Ermm i don't know if it's just me but my achievment page still says
Starting in the "Stamford Bridge" bookmark
If it's not just me, please correct this, some new players might not know what it means.

I would like to know the reasoning behind changing the bookmarks names and descriptions, why remove the "old boar and little piglets" one for the Viking age? I liked that one.

Why use word "chevos"? Sounds like a snack. Do we get a free snack with steam achievements? Is that it? Is that the reason why so many people are obsessed with that?

Except Norse are not really bland. However, as said before, Norse/Tengri getting the Hindu variant of the event would not break much. Few other minor things could also be added such as.

NORSE

- Patron deities - Hindu version

TENGRI

- Patron deities - Hindu version
- Sky Burial for all government types
- Great feast (Given to compensate for lack of religious feast)

ROMUVA

- Reincarnation mechanic (Part of modern revival but hardly breaks anything)

SLAVIC

- River travel (should really be tied to culture but this one would help too I guess)

SUOMENUSKO

- Recruit a Shaman = would essentially replace "Recruit court physician" for Suomenusko rulers but this decision would be available for tribal ruler as well. Shaman would always be Suomenusko (this would of course work for Tengri too but I fear they might get too much flavor then).

WEST AFRICAN

- Reincarnation mechanic (Several tribes believed in "Wise men returning")
- Great feast (Given to compensate for lack of religious feast)

All Pagans should also be able to swap to regular Gavelkind if they get max tribal authority. This would remove need for "Take concubine, convert, swap to gavelkind, go back to pagan" maneuver as elective gavelkind is utter crap.
I meant defensive pagans as religion group, but since you brought it up. I would argue that the Norse are very bland because they play like catholics most of the time with a different interface and a localisation change.

And you're not proposing brand new content only giving existing features to other religions to make them even more samey. It's not gonna make the game deeper.

Immortal characters need more events based on the age at which they become immortal. I have a character that became immortal at age 21, and yet am getting seduction targets saying am too old, or that when I try to arrange marriages my age is factored in even though I don't look like am 60 but 21 since am immortal.

There need events based around
*unchanged look due to immortality* people get curious why am so young looking.
Great Pox.....By lord. my character has had great pox for 20+ years and is immortal. Immortals should get a boon to recovering from disease/illness faster than anyone! and way-way less rare than a non-mortal to get cured of Great pox. Basically, what am saying? Let Immortals be great! right now sickness is kinda crazy with reapers due.

No worries, hopefully it can make it in the next patch. :) (As a side note, I'm pretty sure that there aren't any animals whose heads are considered kosher, so that likely would need adjustment as well.)

Don't know if anyone brought this up in the subsequent pages, reading through them now. But why not add a little something for Jews and Muslims where once food starts getting scarcer they may have to choose between keeping kosher a starving, with a boost to piety and maybe the zealous trait, or screw kosher and righteousness I'm hungry now! (loss of piety or even gain of cynical and chance to lose zealous if you have it.)

I don't know about kosher, but in cases of starvation and other serious emergencies haram meat consumption may be considered lawful. So that's a bit of a stretch.

That is true, but having that moral quandary for a character would be fun.

I resisted it at first because my own language Swedish (which has an officially designated grammar) does not use it, but then again it is really useful so I found myself getting won over. I've even started using it in Swedish despite that being grammatically wrong.
Then again I really hate people who use genitive apostrophes in Swedish so am I any better now? (Yes I am Oxford comma makes sense, the only reason English use the genitive apostrophe is to not get it mixed up with the plural -s and since swedish does not have that there is no need for genitive apostrophes).

I like this, it means that the caliphate weakening also means that the muslims in hispania and persia do. That said I still hold that muslim nerfs need to be primarily to these not to the arabian empire, that needs to remain somewhat stable to keep the byzantine empire in check.

By my understanding, for Kashrut, (and most other commandments), if breaking the commandment is the only way to save someone's life, then it is a sin to not violate the commandment and let the person die. That said, it doesn't really make sense that they would have pig meat in the castle food stores in the first place.

You know what was a thousand years before CK2 timeline? Roman Empire!

Woah, now that I think about it, 1000 years before the game starts hannibal was 13, ashoka has just died, qin shi huang was conquering in china... The start of the game seems much further from then than from now, but it is closer.

Because adding brand new content takes bit of work and testing. I am merely suggesting existing features, which at most require new localisation, to be added to various religions. So for example, WAR having Reincarnation/Great Feast while others do not, gives it something unique compared to others.

Again, Messiah trait would be really neat. For someone who restores the Kingdom of Solomon and builds the Third Temple.

Messiah Descendant trait as well.

Also? I'd like to have more Jewish COAs for Ruler Designer. Or at least update the Ruler Designer to be way less clunky in the CoA department.
