EU4 - Development Diary - 28th of November 2017

Good day all. Today I will elaborate on the map changes which will be part of the upcoming 1.24 update. As the hawk-eyed among you will have noticed in last week's teaser, we are giving some love to the Japanese region and the Philippines, in the titular 1.24 Japan Update.

Firstly, we'll look towards what's going on in the Philippines:

North Philly.jpg

To the north we find three new tags in 1444: Pangasinan, Tondo and Maynila. While the three have distinct state religions: Mahayana, Hindu and Animist respectively, they share the North of the Philippines and the newly added Luzon ideas.

To the south we find the Hindu nations of Madyas, Cebu and Butuan cowering in the shadows of the stronger Animist power of Maguindanao. It can also be noted that the emergent Sulu are playable in 1444. Our new tags here enjoy their own unique National Ideas. We'll pick Maguindanao to look at today, because Animist Pride World Wide

Finally we look towards Japan. They received a lot of attention recently with the release of Mandate of Heaven yet we return to right a wrong with the island. Now in 1444 the Oda clan is playable just a stone's throw away from Kyoto, alonside Kitabatake and Tokugawa. While it will be many years before Nobunaga brings the Oda to promenance, they are available to play from the start with their own National Ideas.

So it's exciting times for the Far East in the upcoming 1.24 Japan update which people can expect before the new year rolls around. The update will be free, contain the above map changes, more ideas, bugfixes and more. Consider it an early Christmas present from us to you. We'll go into detail about some of the fixes and balance changes next week. See you then!

Yeah, Korea needs to calm down with murdering the Jurchen tribes. Especially if any additional flavour gets included to help the Qing actually form more than once in a blue moon.

Seeing as the Oda and Tokugawa are getting added, though, I half expect this patch will be the 'kick Korea down to the curb and break any hope of being relevant' one (seeing as the late 16th and early 17th centuries were REALLY not very good for the Joseon and saw first the Oda, then the Tokugawa, attain dominance over the Japanese Isles). Maybe tone down the Korean AI aggression/have Ming guarantees over the Jurchen+help them unify, include the Imjin War and the Manchu invasions, and Korea goes the historic route of licking its wounds for a couple hundred years.

In general though, the Joseon were really internally focused, more so than most other nations in the period (Korea's borders were more stable and unchanging than Portugal's during the period) and so it's hard to put anything for them. Unless it's factional disputes and that sort, which could be applied to China as well, but they didn't go and invade other nations the way a player would.

Personally, though, I think the HRE or India could use some love. League Wars are just...not very like the actual 30 Years' War (I mean, Austria was literally the only country to stay on the same side during the whole war, the war hardly ever lasts 10 years, let alone 30), India always ends up as a 3 power unshakable hugbox rather than the historical options of major hegemonic empire with stability issues or the other historical option of warring kingdoms that end up as protectorates of overseas empires. Just, for both China and India, the minors ought to be more of 'THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE' and spend a bit more time trying to murder each other and gain full dominance of the region than singing kumbaya.

But yeah, Japan needed a fix. One step at a time.

(and it is just a little--where are the Chinese states of Luzon?)
That's Tondo and it wasn't Chinese.

Nice update. Always wondered if there should be a tag in the Philippines in 1444, having multiple will surely spice things up there. Would like to see Ryukyu get default Japanese sprites. They were still Japanese!
Nope, Ryukyu were not Japanese.

Maybe tone down the Korean AI aggression/have Ming guarantees over the Jurchen+help them unify.

What about a warning from Ming for Korea? It's sorta what actually happened right? I was never totally clear on that. Hopefully make it temporary though or else Korea wouldn't be much fun to play at all, but 10-15 years to let the Jurchens consolidate before Korea jumps in could potentially change things up a whole lot.

Well what tey did to the phillipines isn't that impressive. Half the provinces are still colonial ones for some reason. I could accept that if any of the filipino tags got free colonialists but since they do not. I guess those guys who get free colonists down in indonesia will colonize those places soon enough. Shame thogh I was hoping we'd see the return of protectorates which is how the colonialism of europeans in that region should work.
i agree, the changes to the Philippines aren't at all exhaustive. and it would be nice if SE Asia got some love as well, sure.

still, we're getting a patch which adds a lot of stuff to the Philippines and a few minor changes to Japan--and somehow commenters show up (i don't mean you specifically, just my general observation) clamoring that Japan has been given too much attention while other regions wait for badly needed improvements. all that happens even though all that Japan gets is a minor map change and some pre-existing tags are made playable from the start, while the entire Philippine region, which didn't get anything new since Art of War, gets the overhaul the commenters seem to want so much. sure, it's an imperfect overhaul, but it's there. doesn't it kinda outweigh whatever is added to Japan?

as for colonizable provinces in the Philippines, even the recent big thread in the suggestion forum (Pearl of the Orient) leaves about 40% of the islands open for colonization. are there any suitable tags to cover the east of Luzon and other empty areas? i realize that settlement of uncolonized land isn't the perfect way to model the Spanish presence in the Philippines, but even if protectorates were brought back, perhaps there just weren't any real-life polities big enough to warrant new tags for these empty provinces?

Yeah I too was hoping for more. I was hoping every colonial province in Indonesia the Philippines and most of Polynesia (everything not uninhabited) would be turned into tags and their provinces and that we would see a new system for Europe to interact with them since the old system failed and then was removed.
wouldn't it be grand if they filled the entire Malay archipelago with suitable tags and missing provinces (there's lots to choose from), fixed some errors in Indochina (add those damn impassable mountains), maybe introduced a new government system for the region (like the oft-proposed mandala system), and then brought back protectorates or some other way to gain influence other than outright conquest or colonization of empty land? hopefully all of that is gonna be added someday, but right now i'll take whatever little they're giving us.

That's Tondo and it wasn't Chinese.
i actually meant the smaller Chinese coastal communities, although they arguably do not warrant a tag. there's also Caboloan, represented by the new Pangasinan tag, which hopefully will be strongly sinified or maybe a tributary. the OP doesn't specify it, but i guess that this is the new Mahayana country mentioned by Jake.

I'm very happy that Paradox decided to work on the Philippines. I always get excited when I hear that NE and SE Asia will be getting more love from Paradox.

Hey now I don't wanna take sides in this argument but this is pretty misrepresentative, Korea got 6 new provinces to Japan's 14, and that was only after I scrambled to make a suggestion thread because I was worried it looked like they weren't getting anything at all. Which they kinda didn't, otherwise... literally a single event was the only other addition, other than the unit sprites. I'm grateful to the devs for taking on the suggestions, and I don't think Korea actually needs any more map updates, but it's not like it got very much attention.

I agree, Korea got almost nothing in MoH other than some new provinces and mechanics designed mainly for China. I'm glad that it got what it was given, which are nice bonuses for Korea, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed that Paradox didn't bother to include anything about Korea in an East Asian expansion other than unit sprites.

That is a good temporary fix to contain Korea's expansion and give the Manchurians a chance. This might not be the best place to discuss this because the upcoming patch is focused on the Philippines and Japan, but I am hoping that Paradox will eventually make China's relationship with its tributaries more accurate to better represent the struggle between the nomadic raiders and the Joseon Dynasty before Qing vassalized Korea. According to a book I read about the Joseon Dynasty's 3 offensive wars (The book claims that the Joseon Dynasty only had 3 offensive wars, but there are several invasions into foreign territory. I guess if you count these invasions as separate campaigns within a longer war, the claim could be correct.), the war between Korea and the Jurchen tribes involved a lot of diplomacy from both sides for China to intervene on their behalf. The Jurchens claimed that the Koreans were invading what was technically Chinese territory and needed to be punished for their insolence and warmongering, and of course the Jurchens would be free to loot Korean lands and even settle there as a reward for defending China. The Koreans claimed that the Jurchens were getting bolder and stronger and had to be weakened before they grew powerful enough to devastate China and Korea, citing Jurchen raids into Liaodong as proof, and to further check Jurchen aggression, Korea would keep some land north of its borders to fortify against future Jurchen raids. China's responses were mixed to these pleas but eventually supported Korea with increasing tension between China and the Manchurian tribes.

I think that the emperor of China should have the ability to choose whether to support one of its tributaries in a war between tributaries or to remain neutral. If the emperor of China is an AI, this decision should be influenced by a variety of factors such as the AE of its tributaries, the trust built up between China and its tributaries, the relationship level, and maybe even diplo rep. Of course there should be limits to how much support China can give if it decides to support a tributary, since China alone can easily defeat any of its neighbors. To sway China to their cause, the tributaries would need to play a diplomatic game by sending diplomats to China to petition their cause, send spies to harm the enemy's relations with China, and to send more or better tribute. I think this would make the early game for Korea and the Jurchen tags much more interesting and potentially giving China something to do other than forcing tributary status on unwilling nations and allowing China to further influence the nations within the Sinosphere. This should of course give some of the smaller tags in SE Asia more options when dealing with its bigger neighbors, as I don't see any reason why the above mechanic should be limited to NE Asia.

I'm not saying that this should be a priority for Paradox. I just think that having something like this eventually would really improve gameplay in Asia.

I apologise for being wrong. I thought that Okinawa had a distinct and more tribal, but still Japanese culture.
Linguistically, they're Japonic but Ryukyu didn't really get involved with the rest of Japan until the 17th century, when they got invaded by the Satsuma in the aftermath of the Imjin War (for not contributing enough, I think?). Prior to that, they answered only to the Ming Emperor. After that, both the Qing Emperor and the Japanese Shogun. But still quite distinct, even to the present.

But, to be fair, the Joseon's historical path would probably be one of the least fun possible paths to take. Near constant pacifism, getting beaten bloody, estate influence way too high, incompetent monarchs, coups...I'd probably just restart after 100 years of that nonsense.

Wow I like that the Philippines is getting flavor, Japan is getting more love?
Can't argue, I'm a closet weeb.
Oh hi there ODA! Let's see those NI-

To the people who see their pet-region not getting love this patch:

All in due time.

Is there any constructive solution? We can't change our course drastically, and I think adding Ashikaga was a right direction with the current Shogunate system.

Btw. I wanted to put Asakura in 1444 too (I come from Echizen), but it seems the Kai clan was stronger in that year. Asakura gained power little bit later than the Oda clan (around 1450-1460).
Ashikaga could start wkth less than 100 legitimacy - they would need to wait until they could use all of tgeir abilities. Also, some daimyo interactions could cost prestige and AI daimyos could have an option to reject demands if they felt like the Shogun is weak.

Two ideas that arn't military? This would be stronger then Prussia. Why is the recent focus on Asian nations the nations that are least played, I mean in all of my games I've played there's only one person who occasionally picks Japan only because they are a weeaboo. I'd like to see some change in the HRE and Europe those are the nations we usually play.

No doubt you can request the success statistics of anything you do outside of Europe.
