EU4 - Development Diary - 17th of July 2018

Yo all future World conquerors! Todays dev diary will cover two small free features coming with the 1.26 Patch. First is a Multiplayer feature and then some nice graphics.

So for anyone that watched our Dev Clash campaign called "Happy Three Friends" will remember this feature. Back then I hacked in something very quickly over an afternoon or so that we could play with teams between three players with some special rules and share our score together. Now bunch of people asked us to let other people play with this but it wasn't really usable at the time. So we took out or shine polish and fixed it up a bit.

Here you can see us and some betas posing with the feature.

(Also among the things I fixed were the darned 1 px offset that was on the items in the player list which made it mismatch with the background. It's the small things right?)

It is now enabled in the settings interface under the multiplayer tab. There is also an extra option which enables so anyone can create a team if they want and not only the host. Though editing rights and removing teams are still left solely on the host.

Among other things this feature also changes how alliances and victory cards work for the players. For one all players will be forced into an alliance and we've blocked most ways to break the alliances by player hands. There might be a few special cases where the alliance can be broken like vassalage and such. But if you are in a team you will always be able to make it immediately again no matter the opinion between you and your team members. These alliances also do not count for relation slots. For victory cards, you should no longer get victory cards on each other.

A thing to keep in mind is that technically it is not the player that are in the team but the country itself. This means if a player leave the game it will still count as being in your team.

Next feature is the Indian Siege graphics to give some flavorful art to the subcontinent.

Next week will be with @DDRJake again where he will cover the various balance changes we've been working on.

eh. I don't play multi so this gets a "Neat, but not something I'd ever be concerned about".

But that's fine. You've already given me plenty of reasons to be looking forward to Dharma's release.

I'm actually wondering if there is really all that much left to reveal.
Looking at Dharma's shop site, the answer is no. They've run dry, so that's why the last DDs weren't full of content ...

Always a fan of unique art, including the new Dharma dlc icon, but where are the Indian advisor portraits? I've been waiting years for those, a sample before release would be nice.

Hopefully they will get shown off alongside the unit renders in a big art DD or something.

This is really great. Makes me hopeful for what the future of Paradox GS competitive multiplayer may look like. The dev clashes are really starting to give EU4 an esports feel.

You know what I think would be really, really cool? If Paradox implemented a "leader" mechanic into this, allowing the whole alliance bloc to designate one of them to, well, be their leader, and this position could swap around. I think it would be neat if this leader position had some bonuses tied to it, maybe not super-significant but still nice bonuses, making it a position that you would actually try to get.

The mechanic, funnily enough, is already partially there. It's the Federation mechanic from Conquest of Paradise. I believe that would really help with making the alliance bloc feel like it's actually a bunch of players trying to cooperate and get someone leading them, negotiating deals and so on and would REALLY benefit the diplomatic side of eu4. Ideally, then (although that might've already been there and I just missed it) there should then be a way to leave this bloc somehow, if you decide it is no longer beneficial.

You should feel proud, history is full of exemples of nations uniting to face the best of all.
Groogpoleon Groogaparte. Clearly he should be on France and play world police next clash

I likey likey dis feature

Still nothing of interest free or otherwise. It would be great if the next DLC focussed on the core game. The ‘E’ in EU4 seems to be lacking in the DLC.

Nothing so far suggests I’ll be purchasing this one.

"Muh ----> EUROPAAAAA!!!!!! <---- universalis 4"

I mean, come on... Best DLC in a very long time.

It's still a bit lousy for a dev diary. The last few were actually.

Anyhow, they should have split the meatier DDs in half and combine them with mediore ones like this one. In case of Dharma, policies and trade charters could have been a seperate DD instead of being added to the TC buildings and Diwan DDs. This would have given us two more decent DDs. That's something PDX' PR team should have came up with.
Diaries about an expansion are released while the expansion is being developed. Sometimes the feature isn't even in the game at the time a diary about something else is released. So they can't exactly plan the content of the diaries.

I'll admit that I didn't think much of teams in multiplayer when I saw it in the Dev Clash, but recently I've been trying to get some of my friends into the game, and I feel like they would really appreciate a feature like this. I wouldn't use it with players I didn't know, but co-op EU4 with friends is both fun and a good way to teach the game to newbies, imho. So cheers for that.

Also, that Indian province art looks excellent.
