Which two military leaders who fought each other in battle would you say combine to be the greatest pair of generals? Hannibal and Scipio Africanus? Napoleon and Wellington? Manstein and Zhukov? Suggestions below
Frederick the Great vs Leopold Von Daun
Well it is on you. Most people don't know very well the 7 years war, except that a Russian coup saved Frederick. The reason Frederick did not win is Von Daun.Honestly had never heard of him! Von Daun of course.![]()
Sulla and Marius never really fought directly, except during the very short and very unbalanced first March On Rome. Six legions vs some gladiators and militias….I was going to say Scipio and Hannibal, but that's obvious and already stated in the OP.
Another obvious pair: Gaius Marius and Sulla. Gaius Marius is possibly top 5 in military history in terms of competence, and Sulla was one of the best generals of his time.
OK, I have to give you this one.Okay, at first I thought that these two never opposed each other in a battle, but apparently they were both in command of forces at Caporetto, so the obvious answer that has somehow eluded everyone else in this thread is: Luigi Cadorna and Conrad von Hötzendorf.
