Which two military leaders who fought each other in battle would you say combine to be the greatest pair of generals? Hannibal and Scipio Africanus? Napoleon and Wellington? Manstein and Zhukov? Suggestions below

Sulla vs Archaleos during the Mithidatic War, in particular during the siege of Athens / the Piraeus.

Frederick the Great vs Leopold Von Daun

Or, how could I forget :

Gustav Adolphe vs Wallenstein + Pappenheim at the Battle of Lutzen, but really the full campaign from the arrival of the Swedes (and the battle of Breitenfeld that forces the Emperor to rehire Wallenstein) to the final battle of Lützen is incredible

It has to be this one.

Honestly had never heard of him! Von Daun of course. ;)
Well it is on you. Most people don't know very well the 7 years war, except that a Russian coup saved Frederick. The reason Frederick did not win is Von Daun.

Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen, two Japanese warlords of the Sengoku Jidai, whose talent, rivalry and respect for each other was legendary

So many options to choose from, but this is one interesting choice:

The Great Northern War - Battle of Narva 1700 - Charles XII of Sweden vs. Field Marshal Charles Eugene de Croy of Russia.

Anthony and Octavian.
Cromwell and Fairfax Vs Prince Rupert.
Rommel and Monty.

I was going to say Scipio and Hannibal, but that's obvious and already stated in the OP.

Another obvious pair: Gaius Marius and Sulla. Gaius Marius is possibly top 5 in military history in terms of competence, and Sulla was one of the best generals of his time.

Okay, at first I thought that these two never opposed each other in a battle, but apparently they were both in command of forces at Caporetto, so the obvious answer that has somehow eluded everyone else in this thread is: Luigi Cadorna and Conrad von Hötzendorf.

Sulla and Marius never really fought directly, except during the very short and very unbalanced first March On Rome. Six legions vs some gladiators and militias….

When Marius reseized Italy, Sulla was in Dyrrachium and not commanding anything. And shortly thereafter, Marius died.

That's why Sulla vs Mithridates's general Archaleos, or in general vs Mithridate, fits the bill better IMO.

OK, I have to give you this one.

My cat and the queen of the anthill in my back yard. Perhaps one of this most heated battles in human history.
