Or perhaps they go a little closer to home with the Boudicca-class?

This one has some serious Romani ite domum vibes, I'd approve, although it is worth noting that she didn't actually win in contrast with the current state of affairs.

She won for a bit, sacked a few towns before getting run down by the Romans for sure...

Boudicca also came to my mind, but what would other vessels in class be called? I prefer it to be thematical.

I love Invictus (sound awesome and reminds me of Honorverse class), but I would keep it for some capital ship.

Since I like Victorian RN and their names, how about Gorgon class with Euryale as lead ships?

My second suggestion is Edgar class. Also Victorian and it sounds pretty humiliating to be sunk by HMS Edgar.

HMS Churchill is much more likely to show up at some point, I think.
Well he got his own class of SSNs in OTL, so he didn't do too badly.
I do like how he kept on trying to get the guy named, directly to the King of England.
It is an interesting contrast with his support of Edward VIII certainly.
What about something a bit more inspiring, like the Commonwealth class
Definitely a Capital Ship class name, but then the RN has so many of those to chose from I fear it may struggle. Also inspiring is too similar to the current Type 31 'Inspiration' class stupidity. It's not current USN naming policy bad, but it is still quite awful.
or the Invictus class, or the Newton class, with each ship named after a famous British natural philosopher. We could make HMS Bacon happen.
Now obviously HMS Bacon would be a wonderful thing, it's just it would be a wonderful thing in an entirely different AAR. Anything in HOI4 for example. Because when Francis Bacon did get a ship named after him they used his barony title and called it HMS Verulam.

Alas this name has been taken. The B-class destroyer HMS Boadicea, launched in 1930, currently in the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla and probably motoring around the Med looking dashing. A destroyer does seem the right sort of level, alongside the Tribal class.

There was a Boadicea class of scout cruisers, alas only two and the 'theme' was just names starting with B.

I can see it, but the Admiralty does just love tempting fate and calling ships HMS Invincible (four out of six have sunk, though admittedly three of those were bad storms) so they'd just go with that rather than Invictus.

My word that is unexpected. HMS Gorgon yes (though it's more a coastal defence ship/auxiliary type name), but the actual Gorgons. If nothing else there are only three of them and the RN already has HMS Medusa, a monitor turned minelayer.

This is a very solid call. The Edgar class names are also good if quite random looking. It shall go forward to the approved list.

Options
  • Malta-class "naval passages, straits, and chokepoints" class. Given the OTL Malta class carriers and the several HMS Gibraltars it seems plausible enough. Unless there was a different body of water that should be the name-sake of the class?
  • Diadem-class. Presumably and thence onto standard greco-roman hodgepodge of classical names?
  • Edgar-class. With most of the OTL names. Though as the most flexible it could easily include almost all of the suggestions made so far as it has no real theme, it is the compromise option.

Pip no fun

I was thinking random islands in the British empire no one knows exist. That would work for the dozens of destroyers etc.

Amongst the three options I prefer the Malta-Class, though maybe to avoid confusion with the real life Malta-class the lead ship should be something else? Gibraltar-Class maybe?

Naming every ship after an unsinkable aircraft carrier island seems like tempting the gods of the sea a little too much...it'd be like naming your ships Odyesseus, Argo and Agamemnon. Just asking for trouble.

Well, they did name ships Invincible, Victory and Victorious... It's not like the Royal Navy doesn't have a history of tempting fate.

I had a proud line of 6 British aircraft carriers in battle at once in Imperial Cheese, with equally excellent names:

Indomitable, Indefatigable, Incomparable, Intangible and Idaho. Idaho was bought from the US Navy in exchange for Jamiaca.

I'm liking Diadem quite a bit, it sounds very noble. Although I would also be happy with a Malta/Gibraltar class. Are there perhaps any great victories over the Italians a class could be named after?

That, as Pip will I'm sure point out, be far to recent to immortalize for the Royal Navy.

Good point, maybe in 50 years or so it could be an option.

In that case, I'll informally throw my support behind the Diadem class.

Harsh.

That's what the hundreds of tiny convoy escorts get named after.
I like the Malta class option myself.

There is the confusion issue it is true.

Surprisingly not. The OTL Battle class destroyers were all ordered during WW2 and had several ships named after WW2 battles - Alamein, Matapan and River Plate. There was also a Dunkirk in there and the Aussies ordered a HMAS Tobruk. So a Taranto and a Tobruk would be fine.
In that case, I'll informally throw my support behind the Diadem class.
I think this is the direction I am leaning in.

Also, two more posts. Just two.

There is plenty of Bacon. But only Empire Bacon, the Imperial Lion demands it.

Bacon was a home grown Bacon, therefore should have a Bacon to honour the fact. Otherwise, I shall be forced to write a HOI4 AAR where Edward VIII and DLG manage to win the crowd in the inevitable public showdown by appealing to history and celebrating cult hero's. Thus the new flagship, HMS Bacon, which will be joined by Robin Hood jets, Newton tanks and Cromwell burgers, sold by Churchill and Macmillian outside Parliament after they both got thrown out. Queen Wallis orders many improvements to the Royal Mile, liberals will be shot on sight, and engineers will be forced to follow the architects plans to the letter.

Yes, yes. Won't be my fault this time.

I am not seeing any downsides to this.
