CK3: Tours and Tournaments - The Vision

Greetings!

Come one, come all! The grand tournament awaits your attendance - your steeds have been readied and your entourage assembled for the journey ahead! It’s time to show the world your graciousness as host and worth in the arena… but to get there, we’re better off routing our journey around the treacherous mountain passes of Stipon, as I hear they’ve been crawling with highwaymen since your, ahem, dalliance with Duke Andronikos’ wife during his son's wedding. Then there’s the matter of your unruly vassals: perhaps it’s time for a royal tour?

The life of a ruler was always active - there were many things to attend to, and most courts at the time were itinerant, roaming from place to place constantly. Tours and Tournaments aims to give rulers plenty of things to do, especially during times of peace, by introducing new systems of Travel and Grand Activities!

As mentioned in the Floorplan Dev Diary, we want to reinforce the connection between character and map - after all, the game is played on a beautiful medieval map, and no longer will the only time your ruler leaves the safety of their capital be when you’re at war. There’s an entire world out there to explore, filled with both great opportunities and adventurous obstacles.

By assembling an entourage, selecting options for your travel, and hiring a caravan master, you are ready to set out on the road and travel to activities across the world. The Travel system is an integral part of activities, with both the host and guests traveling to reach them - creating a stronger feeling of place as you see your route being plotted and your character moving directly on the map.

So what are these activities you can travel to, you ask? There’s plenty - firstly we’ve updated and revamped Feasts, Hunts, and Pilgrimages completely - the bread-and-butter of activities. There’s now a reason to hunt in a specific forest within your domain, as a ferocious wolf or legendary stag might have been spotted there - or a reason to hold a feast in a holding with leisure palaces, as you might need to impress a particularly unruly vassal. Pilgrimages will now be epic journeys, potentially taking years if you’re going far - making it necessary for a regent to rule in your stead. All activities have dedicated interfaces with easily-accessible information and beautiful art to set the scene.

Of course, there are Grand activities that are even more impactful - each of them different in their own magnificent way! They have Options and Intents which affect rewards and what type of content you might encounter. Our aim is to make each activity have a clear purpose and be interesting in its own right, therefore we chose to make Grand Tournaments, Grand Tours, and Grand Weddings - three vastly different activities with vastly different executions and purposes!

Grand Tournaments are where you go to test your mettle: spectacles to be announced far and wide, with rewards ranging from precious trinkets to fabulous prizes! Grand Tournaments aren’t only for martially-inclined characters - while there are contests such as melees and jousts, there are also more cerebral ones such as recitals or erudite board games. You can join your knights in slippery wrestling, eagle-eyed archery, dangerous horse racing, and vicious team melees - all clad in gleaming armor brandishing your coat of arms for the masses to see! Participating and winning in these contests will see your characters and knights grow in skill and receive prizes; living the life of a frequent tournament-goer is a valid path to take. Exploring the tournament Locale and choosing the right Intents might help you out in other ways as well, be it finding friends or dispatching rivals. If you’re in need of renown, hosting tournaments yourself will grow your standing significantly, as rulers from foreign realms come flocking to the fateful grounds, eager to compete!

Grand Tours see you assemble your entire court and set out to visit vassals in your realm - an activity commonly undertaken by medieval rulers. This is a way to assert your overlordship, while also enjoying the hospitality your vassals have to offer. There are various paths to take: Intimidation, Majesty, or Taxation, all affecting the rewards and opinions of your vassals. At its core, Tours are a tool for realm stability - and something a newly-ascended ruler should undertake quite early to avoid factions and revolts. You also get to choose between ways of approaching your vassals individually; you might want to tour the grounds, observe a cultural festival, or simply have a private dinner hosted for you.

Grand Weddings allow you to marry above your station… if you’re willing to pay the cost! They also provide ample opportunity for diplomatic shenanigans, such as impressing neighboring rulers into becoming vassals, forming hard-to-get alliances, or creating favorable matches for your children. Of course, these spectacles come with everything you’d expect out of a medieval ceremony - revelries, drama, and even a bedding ritual at the end. Or you can invite a group of mercenaries to color the halls crimson with the blood of the other House, should you desire it.

As some of you managed to cleverly figure out, there’s also a brand-new regency system where we’ve made sure that it’s both interesting to have and to be a regent. Loyal regents help you by dutifully fulfilling their Mandates, and being the regent of your liege gives you opportunities to (with varying degrees of bloodshed) seize the throne for yourself, should you be doing a “good” job.

There’s also a myriad of other changes which we’ll go into in future dev diaries - smaller systemic updates to buildings, knights, vassal opinions, and so on - all to support a more interesting and living map, where your choices matter more.

So take to the road, ruler - great opportunities await!

Tours and Tournaments will be released in late spring, and until the release we will have weekly Dev Diaries.

I'm so surprised by the reception this is getting, it genuinely seems like a new and fresh idea.

The changes to the building system and the host feast/go hunt/pilgrimage events (which were mainly stress loss/get prestige/get piety buttons) is very welcome. The introduction of grander celebrations and events will hopefully make my character, and rulers/subjects around me more interesting and relevant too.
Some people don't seem to want new and fresh ideas. They want CK2 with better graphics

Crusader Kings when? I'm sorry but it's not "Crusader Kings", it's "Fancy Kings". How can you have irrelevant Pope and Church in the game called "Crusader Kings"?
I mean how is it relevant to "Crusader Kings" when in CK2 you could play as the Byzantines and restore Rome, play as Genghis Khan, the Vikings, Muslims, hell even the Chinese and Tibetians. Holy Fury even made other Pagans viable like Hellenism and Slavic.

They pretty much abandoned the "Crusader" part in CK2. Because without the DLC you could only play as Christians with all flavour being around Catholicism... (the first DLC Sword of Islam making Muslims playable, and the second DLC Legacy of Rome making Byzantines viable etc.).

But I agree CK3 lacks any flavour.

Man, when CK3 launched, I was a little disappointed, but I reassured myself it had good bones and great potential for the future. Two and a half years later, almost none of that potential has been made manifest, and this DLC looks to continue the trend.

The devs seem to have a vision for what they want this game to be. Unfortunately, that vision isn't a game I want to play.

I want actual, dynamic mechanics - the turkish conquerors, nomads, republics, a meaningful pope, a distinct byzantine government, not tournaments that will, if past development is anything to judge by, just waste large amounts of money for extremely minimal benefits.

While a bit outside of CK3's timeframe, I want to throw in one of the largest European weddings here, the Landshut Wedding.

To quote from the article, livestock eaten at the original festival:

  • 1,500 sheep
  • 1,300 lambs
  • 500 calves
  • 40,000 chickens
I'm really looking forward to celebrate my coronations with a grand wedding and collecting all the sweet renown and prestige. I mean, there ought to be a way to spend all the millions I have.

What's missing now is some kind of representation for wine and beer. I want the biggest wine cellar across all three continents.
wanna go to that wedding and ask for the vegan options

And you probably won't.

DLCs need to work independently from each other, so how a DLC could be the foundation for another eludes me. If that were the case you would force your audience to buy a DLC they don't want in order to get access to another one or you'd be limiting you audience by eliminating people and potential buyers. If they didn't buy DLC A, they can't buy DLC B.

So I fail to see how any DLC could depend on another.

Hrm I'll hold my opinions a bit until we see what else will be in this DLC, but this feels awfully familiar to royal court.

Player only system that takes you to a new special UI (for tournaments) that then generates events. Considering how well Royal Court was received (45% positive) and the $30 price tag... Best of luck I guess.

Well what was best for RC was the free update, it was really great. It's just that the dlc itself is lacking. Personnaly, I prefer it that way. With this all the players can enjoy the updates instead of blocking it behind a paywall, like Old gods for CK2

Yes regencies sound really good and it's probably the best of the announced features. Thing is they are going to be a part of free patch, not the dlc
yeah, theyve mentioned this actually. people complained that major, critical mechanics were paywalled in the past, so moving forward the aim is to have major things like that be part of a free patch and then the fluff ends up being the stuff you pay for. this allows them to build upon these systems including them as a given and also ensures nobody misses out on core parts of the gameplay. as far as dlc policy goes, i think thats an improvement

like listen im not trying to suck paradox interactive studios off here or anything, im not the big pdx defender. i have my own issues with things as they are, believe me. i just find this reaction in this specific instance pretty unwarranted

Well my takes on the current DLC

  • It has, like the last DLCs since Friends and Foes a horrible Naming Convention that hampers more than helps it. Just bin the double description
  • It is per se interesting and I have to await more dev diaries to make more assumptions.
  • I hope it also tackles events outside your realm and interactions between neighbours and warring factions too.
  • Really miss events around crusades, warfare and co as a location mechanic would bring some more potential to the events.
  • I am less pessimistic as for royal court, which doesn't say much as royal court is my go to punching bag for CK3
  • I really hope the next Major DLC tackles Religion and/or Governments. Both need more Flavour
  • I also hope that the next Flavour Pack tackles Arabia/Persia or Tibet. Most of the DLCs have been eurocentric so far. Heck I would even tacke a Burmese flavour pack (nothing against the region) before another European one.

Sorry that functional crusades, meaningful religious strife, and distinct government types aren't "new and fresh ideas" for you. Frankly I don't think they're "new and fresh ideas" either; I think they're fairly essential to having a good, interesting time playing the game and create a good base for those new, fresh ideas down the line.

This feels like when your house is on fire, you could brainstorm "new and fresh ideas" about how to better fireproof your roof, or you can put out the fire, which isn't new or fresh but it achieves what needs to be achieved in the moment, and honestly that's more important in my eyes.

There's obviously a great deal of content here to unpack, but I'm particularly glad to hear about this development. It sounds like it'll be a significant benefit to vassal gameplay, giving them an avenue to power that doesn't necessarily involve having to usurp their liege's titles. Anything that promotes more internal politicking is music to my ears.
Personally im just really afraid of the balance here. like if going on pilgrimages etc, letting a regent take over is too costly and the rewards for pilgrimages stays similar to what they are now.it would just be a repeat of royal court where id just refrain from using the decisions. It is already too easy for a player to ally the byzantine empire and just let him win the game for u starting as a duke. now with the "marry out of ur station" wedding, seems costly indeed but if it for example made it possible to instantly place ur daughter to inherit the byzantine empire that would be quite lackluster imo, but what else would it be good for?

I hope they fix sending kids to play as they almost always drown, its the same. you never do it unless its a crap kid you hope die.

These caravans / decisions and such must be balanced in a way that they feel fun & rewarding, but with dangers (fun) but not too much as that would make us just ignore it if possible, so they must be intergral to the gameplay and not something you'd want to /can ignore but not feel punished for doing. (Royal court hold court is almost never used cuz it isnt rewarding)

i think, playing as a vassal, duke would probably be the best way to enjoy this ( obviously too early to tell for sure) as you could roleplay /just have fun playing as one of the important houses of the realm, build a tourney reputation/best knights in the realm etc.

Yes I agree, but Sons of Abraham introduced College of Cardinals, Holy Orders and Antipopes. Yes it was dlc but was it like 5th? And it was quite soon after the game release too (approx a year after)
CK 3 had a really great start, but the direction it's going into is really strange.
I do think it may be a good dlc, but not if any other things requires urgent work rn

I don't understand the sentiment that this is somehow a superfluous topic to cover when the itinerant nature of leadership was a fundamental aspect of politics for a wide-ranging set of societies in-game, *particularly feudal Europe*. It's also a key element of distinguishing between centrally-controlled realms based on a capital—like the byzantines, caliphates, and what places like England and France would eventually transition into—and more decentralized realms like the HRE, early France and England, and the steppe kaghanates.

Is this is it for a DLC? There’s So many mechanics that made ck2 awesome still aren’t in ck3. Antipopes, college of cardinals, republics, hordes… the list goes on

I would surmise that PDX believes this forum is a self-selected coterie of connoisseurs, and doesn't represent the larger audience of the game.
Now, of course, the Royal Court only has 43% positive Steam reviews, but the same reasoning applies: maybe Steam reviewers don't represent the audience.
Thats how I feel too. I really wonder who this mystery audience is. I see the same sentiment on reddit as the forum as even smaller websites. And steam isn't showing any positive signs.

Remember there's more than one positive reaction.
Not bombing as bad as some other paradox title announcements but you have to admit the X being first is not a good look. a 67% like ratio is not good. And if past trends are consistent this will likely end up a mixed or mostly negative on steam with such a bad ratio.

Most good DLC get almost no dislikes.

The "two warden" expansions in a row tackle different things as well. This has regencies *in general*, and for when an adult ruler is unavailable or travelling. The "Wards and Wardens" expansion appears from what was mentioned about it to be more focussed on child events and interactions with an underage ruler. Now, in some ways it's not ideal to have them back to back, but in other ways it might mean that the two are more meshed together and interact better as the studio is moving between related areas.
The annoying part you're missing is that we had to vote on it before we knew what would be in this DLC. An absolute misstep and bad communication to not tell us how much the next DLC might overlap with our choices for the next next DLC. If they had announced this DLC first and then did the votes I'd fully accept the reseaults. Now I wonder how many people really did vote for it because they wanted regencies in the game.
So... did you ask for this or not?

If you asked for it, why complain when the thing you specifically asked for gets put into an expansion?

And I'm fairly sure other people have asked *continuously* for regency related mechanics, and for more interactions with the nobles of their domains. Certainly it's something that broadly interests me (although the murder wedding isn't quite what I expected).

There are a hell of a lot of things that various people have asked for, and no matter what an expansion includes *someone* is going to complain about the thing they really want right now being left off the list. Probably in the same terms of "but no-one is asking for this".
If you read my threads on the topics I've always been very clear that these are good DLC ideas in a few years after several DLC once the actual painpoints of the game have been addressed. I always pitch them as an icing on the cake not the cake, because that's what they are. I think this DLC will be good. I think it's being made at the absolute worse time possible.

My whole argument is not that I didn't get what I want, it's not that this DLC is not good, it's that playing CK3 has multiple actively painful aspects to it that need addressing and people have been extremely vocal about it on here, on reddit, and on steam.

Yes regencies and tying to the map and tournaments and ceremonies and travel are all good. Just like Royal court and Items are good. But CK3 as a title is a boat with leeks and they're making content for the parts that arn't leaking. What we have is perfectly ok for another few years as the actual seriously bad parts of the game are handled.

Plus it feels like getting only RPG and fluff focused DLC since release. We want the mechanics at the core of the game to be jiggered not systems on top of the current game.

Some of CK 2s features/DLC were legitimitely good and added a lot to the game. I for one, still don't see a reason why Major Epidemics still aren't in the game. What was wrong with it in CK 2? I can't imagine that it was apparently so bad that you can't even tweak it or modify it a bit.

Sure, some stuff wasn't that good or should've been reworked, but it's not like CK 2 was somehow a bad game or something. It also had plenty of roleplay elements by the end of it's lifespan. I think it's completely normal to expect some stuff from CK 2, not everything, to be ported to CK 3 in some way.

Will we get engagement for adults, choosing and setting wedding date (via widget or script), dowries and so on?
The steam site mentions "prenuptial treaties", which could hint on dowrie being possible.

Royal Court being a foundation for this would be a huge assumption. We don't really know yet if this expansion has any linkage of the game systems between it and Royal Court. (Do we? I didn't see anything in the live show or the DD that actually suggested it)

I sure as hell hope so, considering the big selling point of Royal Court, to me, was that it could be a foundation for future DLC. I envisioned weddings and tournaments and duels visualized with all your court and realm characters and whatnot....

Royal Court has been out for a year, and neither Fate of Iberia or Friends and Foes used it at all. If this one does nothing with it either.... wow.
