Summary

Game crashes at launch with Exit Code 3221225477

Steps to reproduce

- Launch the game

Description

I just tried to start the game, first from the launcher, then from its .exe file directly. The game launches for a second then crashes. If started from the launcher it shows an error message with the exit code 3221225477.
I play on Steam.

I tried so far:
- Restarting Steam
- Verifying game files
- Restarting Steam again
- Updating GPU drivers
- Restarting the PC
- installing newest VC++ and .NET manually
- Restarting PC again
- Opting into the Hotfix-Branch via Steam Betas

Here is the name of the latest crash dump I sent: AOW4_Crash_2023-05-02-16-52-22_304144CE.tcd

Disabling other GPU + beta patch works ( on steam, right click in library, properties, betas, select hotfix branch)

Keep in mind that some CPU has integrated GPU
Search for 'Device Manager' then click on 'Display adapters' to see your GPU's. Then right click "Disable Device" if you have more than one.
The beta patch does not work and I don't have an integrated GPU, so there are still folks this isn't working for. Either way, we shouldn't have to disable something in order for a game to work. Hoping they fix shortly.

My game is no longer crashing. Now, it is saying "Could not find supported gpu". I'm trying to play on my Mac using Parallels 18 so it's using a virtual GPU.
Hey TrueYoungGod, Parallels does not support DX12 which is required to run Age of Wonders 4. If you have no other method of playing the game we would advise you to request a refund from where you bought the game.

So, for now I am able to play the game on my guest PC, which is not really meant for gaming anymore. This PC does not meet the minimum requirements so it is low resolution, low detail, and low performance, and the game still crashes a lot - but I can play a little bit at least, though it would be much more comfortable on my main PC. So far the furthest I got into the game on the main PC is to the first frame of the paradox logo appearing.
I have tried everything I could think of, including installing windows updates I wanted to avoid, just in case there is some obscure requirement, unplugging everything but the bare essentials, shutting down every piece of not strictly needed software, including services, disabling freesync on my main monitor, setting the refresh rate to 60hz.
Is there any clue at all what this crash could be related to?
Anything more I could try on my end?

Just now I was playing on the guest PC, and after a crash the game updated (hotfix branch as well as it seems a bit more stable), so I thought I'd test the update on the main PC, but it still crashes the same way. While writing this there was another update, and still the very same crash.
Is there any place where you guys post when you update the hotfix version? And maybe what you tried to fix in the latest update? I understand if not, as it seems to be very temporary, but it would be nice to see the progress.

This is the name of the latest crash dump on my main PC: AOW4_Crash_2023-05-03-17-52-52_B7DC6C49.tcd

Oh and just in case this helps, and is not included in the crash dumps, here are some of the specs for the two PCs I am trying to play on:

Main PC:
Ryzen 2700X, Radeon RX Vega 64, 16Gb RAM 3200Mhz DDR4
Two monitors at 1920x1080, one at 120-144hz with freesync, the other 60hz
Windows 10 Pro

Guest PC:
AMD A8-7600, GTX 750ti, 12Gb RAM 2400Mhz DDR3
One Monitor at 1440x900 at 60hz
Windows 10 Home

Hello,

An update to my previous post. I switched over to the hotfix beta in the properties tab in STEAM. That did allow me to open/start the game. However, it'll only do so using the UHD graphics, and not my RTX 1070 gpu. This basically makes it so stuttery and laggy, its unplayable. Switching backl to the release build, and it just crashes without running again. This needs to be fixed, as the streamer build runs just fine apparently...

I haven't been able to launch either. Initially I refunded because I thought I didn't meet the system requirements however since I had very similar problems to so many other people on more up to date systems I rebought the game and tried out a bunch of things to try and get it to work. No luck yet, but I want to be following this thread to get updates.

Hi there. AFter newest update of Epic Game Store Launcher, the game suddenly started to crash right at launch.
I disabled intel's integrated GPU but that didn't help.
Earleir I had problem with saves that did not want to get saved after some time of playing.
It was workable by just restarting the game every hour or so. But this just crashes it completly.

Guys, we found a solution here:
Why don't you read the previous posts here? This is not a solution, as it does not work for everyone. And it is not a new idea either.
As stated before, I do not have an integrated GPU, so I can not disable it. I have also already installed the newest drivers completely fresh. It did not help.
I am still getting the same crash at the same point, just after launching the game, and the launcher still reports the same exit code 3221225477.

Hey Numorex, you can change which GPU the game uses for the Game Settings on the Hotfix branch.

Hi PlutonArioch, if you're on the Hotfix branch and still have this error after updating the I'd like you to do the following. Can you try launching the game directly from the .exe in the install directory and let me know which error message appears then?

I apparently spoke too soon. After a GOG update on AgeOfWonders4 this morning, I now can no longer play the game whether the item on-CPU GPU is disabled or not. Not a good look. I'll give it a few days before I request a refund. QA guys, no pizza party for you.
