Happy New Year!

In my Jianzhou-Qing run, I had discovered SA. At some point I looked over and saw this:

Interesting. I've never seen any North African country colonizing, let alone a rather diminished Morocco. Nevertheless, it isn't really that bizarre.

I come back a few days later, and have a jolly old time. Siberia's mine, Mongolia's mine, I'm slowly eating Japan by threatening war, and I'm making 0.61 mandate per month. At the very end of the session, I get a request for military access. From Vijayanagar. They are at war with the Spanish empire. Poor guys, I wonder why. So I look over and see "Vijayanagari Cascadia." That can't be right! So I scroll down, and lo and behold:

They took exploration ideas. What's even weirder is that Vij doesn't appear to have colonized anywhere in Indonesia or the Philippines.

All in all, the colonizers of this game are Spain (mostly in NA, but also have a CN in Colombia), Portugal (SA), France (little more that trading posts across Africa), Britain (lords of Eastern NA), Morocco (50% Morocco, 50% Moroccan Colombia), Vijayanagar (???), Qing (Eastern Siberia/outlying islands), and Hadramut (they sought to share a shred of my glory, I'm sure). See the 1601 global map for a (rough) illustration.

Also, I can join a coalition against Ayutthaya. They have ~40k troops. I have ~270k. And I can always have more tributaries.

Don't ask why or how but this is a Somali Taïwan...

(this is Europa Expanded but I can't see any colonisator for Somalia, and they only have Taïwan as colonies...)

My guess:
  • Taiwan was auto-colonised by event as a result of Mingsplosion (a general flees to Taiwan and creates a bright yellow-green nation).
  • The Taiwanese nation was in a war with Somalia (due to unwise alliances), and either it was vassalised (and later diplo-annexed), or it was annexed outright in the peace deal.
If you check the province history of one of the provinces in Taiwan, that will probably give you some pretty big hints about how it happened...

Checking the culture of the provinces is all that's really necessary. The province histories will provide a detailed account.

The biggest question I have with this theory is: who did Tungning ally? Countries don't really make alliances with countries halfway across the map before 1600.

My guess would be:
- First, Somalia attacked someone in E Africa or Arabia and, as a result of that war, they gained a province in India or SEAsia. This could be via a separate peace with a secondary participant, or it could be a colonised island if the nation they attacked was a coloniser (eg. Hadramaut, Mamluks).
- Then, Somalia attacked someone in India or SE Asia, who was allied to Tungning, and they took Taiwan in the peace.

(I believe the AI doesn't ever mark secondary participants as full co-belligerents, and as you observed it would be very strange to see an alliance between Tungning and anyone near Somalia, so overall I don't think it's possible for Somalia to chain their way to Taiwan in only one war, I think it has to have been at least 2 wars.)

This is a new level of insubordination!!!1111oneoneone

My junior partner of Ethiopia just got in an alliance with my war enemy Portugal.

I guess Eth got the event for discovering the Mediterranean sea or whatever. Anyway this is a strange loophole due to relying on the scripts and no checks like being actually eligible for the alliance.

Ethiopia appears to hate your guts. If their liberty desire is high enough, then your unhappy subjects can and will start forming alliances with foreign nations who can and will support their independence.

This is not what's going on. If a subject has its independence supported by someone, that's what it is displayed as - supporting independence. That support only become an alliance if war breaks out. @JohnyCage is correct, his screenshot is the result of the series of events that create an alliance between Ethiopia and Portugal without checking the diplomatic situations of both nations.

The Provencal Switcheroo.
Pope conquered the Provence Area and a month later gave away Avignion to Provence.
Probably got good enough relations with Provence thanks to no longer desiring their land.

Observer game to test some things out.

Noticed the Ottomans were gotting themselves sieged by only two rebel stacks. I wondered where there armies were and then realized they went on Hadj and got stuck behind the Mamluks.
