There's already a thread on Brazil, but I was doing my own thing before Braziler posted his thread and I wouldn't want to derail it, so here it is.
I started doing this map because I very much disliked the few bits we'd seen of Brazil (the religion mapmode with the sprawling wastelands and the area map with the... peculiar setups), so I decided to start one from scratch: I took the 2022 Brazilian Map of Municipalities from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, in English) and began color-coding every single municipality, one by one, by its date of creation/foundation/settlement/partition/etc. I'd then organize them more or less on how they would be like in the time period (I chose 1839 as the end date for this), and from this I properly split them by origin and gameplay purposes.
It was a very stupid job. But is there a more powerful feeling than being correct on the internet?
I still have to update the location names, so for now I only have the modern names:
My focus here was purely the locations. Should I make a culture/native map? Maybe. I totally would if this was EU4. But I'm tired, this took me four months, reception may be mixed and all in all my original idea was just to suggest a better wasteland setup for Brazil.

My focus here was purely the locations. Should I make a culture/native map? Maybe. I totally would if this was EU4. But I'm tired, this took me four months, reception may be mixed and all in all my original idea was just to suggest a better wasteland setup for Brazil.
- Why 1839?
I don't think Johan has given us the end date yet, but 1) the game starts in 1337, 2) it lasts "around five centuries", and 3) the independence of Belgium was recognized on 19 April 1839 by the Treaty of London, so it stands to reason that the game would only go as far as 2 January 1839. What even is a Belgium anyway?
- How scientifically accurate is this map?
If you tried to used this as a historical source you'd be stupid. But I did put in some effort! IBGE has a website for the Brazilian municipalities, with some stats, pictures and mostly importantly, history for every city in this god-forsaken country. While it's not perfect by any means (in many cases the city halls sent the history info themselves to the project, so some entries are... subpar), between this, Wikipedia, general knowledge and some searches on the legislature websites, I could get an overall picture of the age of every municipality and which city split from which. Thanks to this I could more or less reverse-engineer them to paint the location map. Many exceptions had to be made though, because of the "3x location threshold" stipulated by the map devs, aka "one location cannot be three times bigger or three times smaller than their neighbors". Turns out Portugal and Brazil never cared about that rule! Silly colonials.
- How accurate is the location map?
Considering that you *cannot* have the historical setup because some provinces are just ridiculously big/small? Out of the 732 locations, almost 700 comprise cities which split from each other ("mother-daughter"), 26 include multiple cities split from an outside source ("sisters") and around a dozen comprise native/jesuit settlements that independently became cities/villas ("cousins"). So yeah, I'd say it's quite accurate.
- What was the criteria for wastelands?
First, I took Sulphurologist's TRI map. Then I painted all red and pink as black. Then I overlaid his map over mine and drew black blobs over every cluster of black dots I saw. Then I erased those that felt too stupid (keyword, "too") or too small. This left me with somewhat porous wastelands mimicking the Serra do Mar and some other small hilly areas in the map, with many being "cosmetic" wastelands (fully inside a province, or acting as an incomplete border to two provinces).
I may be biased, but I think I got the right balance to it. Brazil has more jungle than mountains (it's VERY flat compared to the Andes), and even the jungles couldn't stop the greed of the colonizers. Some areas like the east of Minas Gerais weren't very much colonized in the time period not because of the terrain or the vegetation, but because the Portuguese Crown didn't want to risk new smuggling routes! This is why there are so many "black-age cities" that aren't wastelands; people didn't settle there either because the Crown didn't allow, or because this country is so goddamn big and rich it simply was more interesting to stay where they were until the local economy failed and/or new settlers arrived.
But that's for the coast/midwest. I was a lot less forgiving with the Amazon. For them, I used this Native Vegetation map by ANA (National Water and Sanitation Agency, in English). Anything that was a "black-age city" under dense/open ombrophilous forest became a wasteland. Could those areas have become normal settlements had the colonials decided to exploit the region instead of the coast? Yeah, but they didn't and to this day the Amazon region is the least populated region in the country so really, just cover it in wasteland.
...Except for those "corridors" I made through the Amazon. Can't do much against them, those places really were settled, either to be populated by whites or by "domesticated" natives. Some of them were settled by Spanish jesuits as early as the 17th century! The more you know (I didn't before doing this map!).
-Should the Pantanal area be a wasteland?
Maybe? I have no idea lmao. To me it's just a bigass marsh. It's a border area so who knows, it could add something to the war/trade aspects.
-There are too many locations!
Are there? This Brazil has around 10% of France's location density. I'd say it's a fair number for its size. This is a *big* country, 90% the size of US/China, what it always lacked in the time period wasn't land or riches or fertility, but people. In fact, I fully expect the AI to concentrate on colonizing the coast for most of the time period, just like IRL, with the hinterland being the domain of SoPs/horizontal tags.
-Using current-day municipality borders to draw locations is stupid and you should feel stupid
